    On October 14, 1912, while on a campaign trail in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot just before delivering a speech. Despite being wounded, Roosevelt demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. The assailant, John Schrank, fired a revolver at close range, but the bullet was slowed by a metal eyeglass case and a folded manuscript in Roosevelt's breast pocket.
    Although the bullet pierced Roosevelt's chest and lodged in his rib, it did not penetrate any vital organs. Remarkably, Roosevelt decided to proceed with his scheduled speech, refusing immediate medical attention. Standing before the crowd, he assured them that he had been shot but was not seriously injured, stating, "It takes more than that to kill a bull moose."
    For approximately 90 minutes, Roosevelt captivated the audience with his speech, addressing various political issues and emphasizing his commitment to progressive reforms. Only after concluding his address did he finally agree to be taken to the hospital. Doctors were astonished by his endurance and credited his physical fitness as a key factor in his survival.
    Despite the assassination attempt, Roosevelt's determination to carry on with the speech became an emblematic moment in his life, highlighting his courage and unwavering spirit. This incident further solidified his reputation as a charismatic and indomitable figure in American history.

    You are absolutely correct. Teddy refused to shoot a young bear that some guides had tied to a tree, he said it wasn't sporting. The story took off and a toy maker made a stuffed bear naming it - Teddy's Bear. Now Teddy Bear 🐻

    Theodore Roosevelt actually hated being called Teddy. But that's is where the term Teddy Bear comes from as people thought he looked like a bear.
    Easily one of the most badass people to ever be president.
    He died peacefully in his sleep, and one of his friends is quoted saying
    "death had to come while he slept out be would have put up a fight."

    Why is a bear called a teddy?
    Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn candy shop owner, saw the cartoon and had an idea. He and his wife Rose also made stuffed animals, and Michtom decided to create a stuffed toy bear and dedicate it to the president who refused to shoot a bear. He called it 'Teddy's Bear'.

    He had two sons who followed in his footsteps. Quentin was a US pilot who died in France in WW I. Theodore Jr, served in France in WW I, was injured in action and declared disabled, at the start of WW II he had his disability revoked, served as a Colonel in North Africa and landed with his division on Utah Beach, led his men off the beach but died of a heart attack a couple of weeks later. Both Roosevelt brothers are buried side by side in a US cemetar in France. TheodorecJr received the US medal of Honor for his actions on D Day, his father had received the Medal of Honor for his charge up San Juan Hill in the Spanish American War. A family of brave men.

    One of, if not the best president the US has had in my opinion. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and conservationist. If it wasn't for him, we would not have National Parks today! It started with him. Also like said in the video, a bad ass. Good reaction as always.

      Top 5 or 3 for sure. I think Lincoln and Washington might top him mostly because of their times and what they had to do. Teddy didn't have the messiness in the country to deal with like they did. But he did so much more maybe. And FDR was pretty dam good too. But if you pick Teddy as number one, you have no argument from me.

    Teddy was from the mid west. He was mountain man / cowboy. Tough dude. He is also the President who started assigning lands to state and national parks. He knew that there is beautiful land we must preserve for future generations yet to come.there is extreme protection laws over these parks. You can't even take a rock from these area. We owe that president great respect.

    Roosevelt delivered a speech in France in 1910 called Citizenship in a Republic.
    Part of that speech has become known as the Man in the Arena.
    It is my favorite quote
    “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat”

    Theodore Roosevelt was a manly man. He was a Republican, a stateman, a politician, a conservationist, natulalist, historian and writer. His parents a businessman and philantropist and his mother a socialite. The family traveled to Europe hiking in the Alps and to Egypt. He was home-schooled in geography, history, biology and French and German. Later at Harvard he did well in science and philosophy but struggled in Latin and Greek.
    He was Asst. Secretary of the Navy and Governor of New York. He integrated his exuberant personality and vast range of interests and achievements into a cowboy persona defined by robust masculinity.
    His wife and his mother died on the same day in 1884. His mother passed away at 3 AM of typhoid fever and his wife eleven hours later of kidney failure after giving birth. Both passed at the Roosevelt mansion on 57th street in Manhattan.
    As President (1901 to 1909) he established the US Forest Service and created the first 5 national parks. Also established bird reserves, game preserves and national forests. In 1909 went on an African expedition in east and central Africa. Traveled to the Belgian Congo and went on the Nile river to Khartoum (Sudan). In 1910 on a tour of Europe he met with Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, King George V of GB.
    In 1913 went on an expedition to South America and the Amazon. A tributary river was renamed Roosevelt River. He suffered a leg wound that turned into tropical fever which resembled malaria he had contracted in Cuba years earlier. For the rest of his life he suffered flare-ups of malaria and leg inflamations.
    He died in his sleep at home at age 60 of a blood clot that traveled to his lungs.
    He was nicked-named Teddy and plush stuffed toys were named Teddy Bears after him.

    Teddy Roosevelt truly was one tough badass. He led a combat detachment known as the Rough Riders and took San Juan Hill. He was also a big game hunter and major conservationist. It was Teddy Roosevelt who started the National Park system.
    He wound up passing away in his sleep, which is thought of as kind of fitting. It’s jokingly said of him that Death had to take him as he slept, for is he were awake, there would have been a fight.

    Teddy is THE single most badass president and possibly man in the history of the country. You have got to look into the insane things he had achieved and done in his lifetime. He was a naval officer, police commissioner, cowboy and rancher, army officer and Medal of Honor recipient on top of being the President of the United States. He also would challenge other cabinet members and ambassadors of other countries to boxing and wrestling matches in the White House and all this was after he grew up with severe health issues as a child. Not only that but he was a GREAT president and actually tried to look out for the everyday men and women of the country instead of how nearly all current politicians only look out for the wealthy and powerful these days

    Teddy Roosevelt was many things, but two things that he demonstrated multiple times in his life were his courage, and physical toughness.
    These were things that he valued.

    Love Teddy Roosevelt, imo one of the best presidents the US has ever had. Love his saying of "Speak softly but carry a big stick." The way I interpret that as don't be a braggart or bully but be prepared to defend yourself if someone tries to push you.

    Hearing about his 84 minute address reminds me of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. If it isn't the most famous political speech in American history, it's on a short list. The man who spoke before him, spoke for 2 hours, 2 hours! Lincoln's address was 2 minutes, with around 270 words.

    As no definitive data has been found about the origin of Roosevelt's famous line "Speak softly and carry a big stick" it is perhaps his most famous opinion/ It basically explains his attitude about politics, both national and international.
    BTW T. Roosevelt ( and his cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt) are well worth studying [as well as FDR's wife Eleanor]

    He had the "Great White Fleet" circumnavigate the globe and show the world what the national power was. He also was often described as "colorful". He was one of our great presidents.

    I recall during college we had a class lecture well over 2 hours long. Mind numbing to say the least...then were asked to provide a 3 page MLA essay witting on the lecture and if we agreed or disagreed with the lecture....with a minimum word count and all the bells and whistles. ( MLA Style specifies guidelines for formatting manuscripts and citing research in writing. MLA Style also provides writers with a system for referencing their sources through parenthetical citation in their essays and Works Cited pages.) That went on 2 times a week for a while. Needless to say an 84 minute speech is nothing to scoff at. Especially if said individual was shot shortly before the speech.

    🧸YES‼President Teddy Roosevelt and his son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Roosevelt was also the only President to be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Spanish-American War 1898.. Almost 50 years later, his son Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. was awarded the Medal of Honor, his for actions during World War II. This President’s Son Overcame Age, Health Issues on D-Day to Earn the Medal of Honor.

    Teddy Roosevelt is in my top 5 U.S. President's list. TR is one of my favorites as he developed the National Park System preserving beautiful wild lands of America as well as being a war hero.

    You laughed when they called him Teddy Bear, but the "Teddy Bear" was named after him. He was an avid hunter (among many other things he did in his life), and it is said that he spared a bear one day while out hunting. Some enterprising person made a stuffed toy bear, and the Teddy Bear was invented.

    Just as a side note. . . one of the reasons Americans love Teddy Roosevelt is the while in office, he created the National Paks system in the U.S. We have Yellowstone, Yosimite, etc. as a result of his love of nature!

    Years earlier, US President McKinley died from a gunshot would. The Soviet's first leader Lenin was shot and, rather than have the bullet removed, he ignored it. This led to blood poisoning and a stroke that ended his life in six months.

    Roosevelt rode his horse in to the Menger Hotel rounding up the Rough Riders that rode into Mexico City in the Mexican American War and up San Juan in Cuba. It is amazing how much he did from Safaris and travelled the American West

    He lost because he was President under the Republican party and when he ran a third time he was under a different party (The progressive party) which in essence split the Republican voters in half. 1/2 the R voters voted R and 1/2 voted for Rooaeveldt in the progressive party.

    He was a six term president -- they changed the rules after him. I believe he ran as a Democrat, as a Republican, and as a candidate for his independent party The Bull Moose Party. I'm not a history scholar, though -- somebody correct me if I'm wrong. That just stuck with me from school.

      I think you might be confusing him with FDR, who was a 3 term president (the most of any). Teddy served one full term and most of McKinley's after McKinley was shot. He failed in his bid for another term as an Independent (The Bull Moose Party) and his running ensured that Wilson won by splitting the Republican vote. I often wonder how different the US's participation in WWI would have been if Teddy had been in office. He is my favorite President - hands down.

    I admired Teddy Roosevelt as a person but I don't like progressives. I wouldn't have voted for him.
    Yesterday literally blow away. We had a 600 mile Derecho come thu the midwest.

      So you don’t mind having toxic chemicals and other items dumped into your food? Because “progressive Roosevelt” pushed for the pure food and drug act which led to the FDA. He also helped to establish the 8 hour work day, workers comp and was a major proponent for workers rights on top of establishing the national parks system

      Why is America the only country in the world that washes eggs and have to be kept refrigerated? Because the FDA said so but when an egg is washed it allows bacteria to enter.
      The only pure food is food you grow yourself.
