  • Discover how Adelaide Hills cattle farmer Alan Brice’s dam has become a wonderful asset for his property and for nature, and how you can do this too.
Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu ran a dam restoration workshop at Alan’s 400 ha Harrogate farm late in 2022, to support Cudlee Creek bushfire-affected landholders through the Local Economic Recovery program. The bushfire had damaged many dams, causing siltation, algal blooms and destroying native vegetation.
A the workshop, Phil Barron from Barron Environmental Services explained how to bring life back to eroded, denuded and polluted dams: by excluding stock, controling weeds, planting native species and maintaining access for management.
The video shows how Alan’s healthy dam has its own wetland, island and a stunning population of birds including a pair of nesting black swans.
The dam has been fenced off from stock for about thirty years, and the benefits are obvious, with plenty of ground cover, no erosion, abundant wildlife and crystal clear water.
This project is being delivered by the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and Regions. This Local Economic Recovery project is jointly funded by the South Australian and Australian Governments under the National Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
