    Fun fact: indigenous peoples does not mean (as i first thought) that one people lived there before others came. Take Sweden were Germanic peoples ancestors came to Sweden around 15 000 years ago and the Sami peoples came around 2500 years ago but the Sami peoples are still the indigenous peoples of Sweden. How? That depends on whom you ask because indigenous peoples means different things to different countries and different organisations. I just wanted to share this for those who like me thought that indigenous peoples was the first peoples in one place.

    • @sleeping885
      @sleeping885 Před 3 lety +1

      Hi! Sounds like that girl was misinformed. Indigenous usually means being a part of the ethnic group that lived on that particular land first, before any other groups immigrated or colonized it. There were native groups living in puerto rico for thousands of years before Spanish colonizers arrived and exterminated them. From what you've said, you're Puerto Rican without any native heritage, so you're hispanic/latinx. I hope this helps! :)

    I still don't understand what native means. like native Americans also descended from Africans just like other humans were. So then they migrated from Asia through a land bridge a few thousand years ago. So native Americans weren't originally from america as in they evolved in america but instead migrated. I think when someone defines indigenous I think it means first settlers because native Americans settled the Americas before anyone else did. Okay so when they settled they became native even though they migrated to the Americas instead of evolving there in the first place. So what makes a native more native than say a European who also didn't originate in america but migrated here just at a more recent time. I'm still confused as what it means to be a native to a land so I hope someone else does

    • @fragolegirl2002
      @fragolegirl2002 Před 4 lety +1

      More generation equals more history to the Land, one just has more history than the other, keep in mind many of our languages are born in the Americas with little to no connection to anywhere else, English is from Europe, You can understand a british person. Although I don't believe one is more American than the other. In Ecuador there are no indian reservations so they can get a monthly check for being indian. We got ecological reserves and anything in it is protected by law including human inhabitants. The afro-ecuadorians are members of an ecological reserve, they did not have to be indian. There is also forming a commitee and buying acres of reserved land out of your own pocket. That basically means anyone can buy a reservation so to speak. its just not racially based. Which I agree fully with.

      Yeah you cannot determine Latino either with DNA. For starters it ain't a race, its just a regional term nowadays, short for latin american, deriving from the roman word Latin. Yep, celia cruz is a black "latina" William levy is a white "latino" and george Lopez is a mestizo(mixed amerindian) "latino". peruvian president fujimori is a Japanese "latino". What do they have in common? they are all from latin america. What is different about them? none of them are the same race. The majority of Latin America is RACIALLY Mestizo not Latino nor Hispanic. Latino and Hispanic is NOT in our demographics, not even in Mexico.

As a first generation Canadian, I see other cultures that are beautiful and amazing, but for fear of being labelled a culture thief, I don't indulge in, contribute to, borrow from, receive inspiration from, question, or even look at said culture. If it isn't mine, I have been trained to see, turn my head, and mind my business, in case my questions are seen as having ulterior motives, and heaven forbid, insulting someone. Just because my skin colour is white, does not mean I am your enemy, or that somehow I am out to hurt you. I am sorry if my skin colour leaves a rancid taste in your mouth, but please understand, I have done nothing to you, to give you a reason to hate me.

That when we say white people are the problem, which they are, that that means "every single white person no matter what they do"? You can start being an ally by saving your white tears and saying, yeah, Colonization happened due to my Ancestors, and what I can do to help is stand by N8Vs in all they do.
      What is worse than cultural appropriation is cultural genocide, and that is what happens when white folks refuse to see that everything white people do here that is NOT in resistance to the dominant (imposed/colonial) culture CELEBRATES that culture, and is thus anti-N8V. Your way of life, as you live it, comes at the deeeeeep price of the N8V lives and Lifeways that were forcefully reduced towards entire elimination. It is only through fighting have we ever been able to be treated fairly by whites, because whites have never listened to us.
      Reasonable people are never greedy, and greedy people are never reasonable. Colonialism has always been about greed and intolerance to Lifeways that are not conducive to white imperialism.

    Indigenous: when you are born here, it means 100% legit you are from here.
    Unlike every one else 😄
    Genetically, it means specific adaptations to the climate, altitude, topography and the ability to better digest the local flora and fauna

      @@davidsirmons that level of elementary logic ensures that you're missing the larger context.
      Your ancestors aren't from here, thus no genetic adaptations like they do, especially with the indigenous flora
      You don't have first nations rights and privileges to the lands and resources though , mister defines himself indigenous!

      I assume you're referring to cultural appropriation, but that would be the non-indigenous person who the traditions were shared with turning around and presenting them as their own, profiting off them.

      bussche+ Except in reality the artist in question was shut down because her art was inspired by an indigenous artist. Her art exhibit gets shut down for her skin color not matching the artwork. If that's not racism, then I don't know what is.

    Then no-one is indigenous, to any land other than Africa, where humans began.
    It's either that....or being indigenous is a qualifier meaning a people have lived in a given land for long enough that generations think of it as theirs. And "native" indians slaughtered the true aboriginal people who were here far before them. There are cave paintings of tall, black-skinned and white-haired people being surrounded by red-skinned Indians on horseback, the indians firing arrows into them. These people were likely from Australia, as those features are common to the aboriginals there as well, and no-where else. As not a single trace of that bloodline exists on the north american continent today, it's clear the Indians wiped them out.
