- While not as popular as the Wilhelm Scream, this hyperdrive failure noise shows up in a few places after its initial use in The Empire Strikes back.

Han: "I don't understand, this has never happened before..."
Leia: "It's OK; it happens to a lot of men your age."
Han: Oh yeah? watch this! 😎
*Falcon breaks down
Leia: I'm waiting...😒
if you search "P-26 Peashooter start up", you will find where that sound comes from
I looked it up, awesome dude!
the orignal was a biplane, but yeah.
Yeah some P-51 do it too
Actually I came here from an AN-2 Plane start up video and the engine sounded similar to this scene
"I think we're in trouble.."
*"WE'RE IN TROUBLE"*
The Star Wars equivalent of the sad trombone sound
In gta?
I love that snarky they're getting closer.
that awkward moment when you roll a despair on an astrogation check
Oh shit, that's where they got the Malfunctioning part on the Solo movie from. Damn that's dope!
People are like "the scene with Greedo sums up Han Solo's character the best!"
No dude it's this scene.
Haha, that made me laugh at a deep and satisfying level. That is a great take 🤣🤣
Thank you...been looking for this!
Holy hell, this scene is cooler and has more character and sex appeal than the entire 2 and a half hours of The Last Jedi put together!
Sheesh, he was only getting to his 40s, it couldn't have been that soon!
I was today years old when i realised the hyperdrive failure sound effect is the sound of warbird engine being cranked by inertia starter
Inertia starters are cool.
Thanks for documenting this little phenomenon with your videos. It's one of those things where I just assumed I was the only one who was nerdy enough to notice. Guess not! Great series of videos...
If you're looking for a new project to tackle, how about trying to document every known movie reference to the number 1138?
I could help you out with that...
This sound was also used in Robocop during the infamous ED-209 scene (When he shuts down after shredding an OCP employee to bits)
I recall it also being used in one of the Indiana Jones films for an airplane propeller.
@@McSuperfly101 "Temple of Doom." It's more or less a stock Skywalker Sound effect.
@@McSuperfly101 In the instance of an airplane propeller, it is the correct, real-world sound. 'Tis the spin-up and engagement of an old-school inertia starter, which was very common for aircraft during the era in which the Indiana Jones movies were set. Such starters were also common in tanks and some automobiles.
I would hate for a Hyperdrive to fail on a CR90 Hammerhead Blockade Runner.
I re-enacted this exact scene when my trucks fuel pump failed.
I remember watching RoboCop in the the theater and hearing the sound. They used a few.

inertia starter
Didn't this happen to Lando as well, In Return of the Jedi I think
It was later in the same movie. The Empire disabled it. "They told me they fixed it!"
Did you know that the sound effect for the Millennium Falcon failing the jump to light speed is the same sound used in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indy is yelling for Chuck to start the engine?
czcams.com/video/h_XRbGUZbfk/video.html
Did you know that the the sound is actually 'correct' for an aircraft engine of that era? The sound is an inertia starter. A flywheel is spun up inside the aircraft - either by hand crank or small electric motor - and then used to crank the engine over. You'll hear them whine as they're spun up, then that stuttering, eeeh, eeeh, eeeh, as they're engaged.
It's also used in Temple of Doom in the airplane before it crashes
