Cowboy movie is my favorite but the whole album is great. All of these guys could sing and boy did they take advantage of that. I had heard that song growing up, and liked it, but it just got relegated to the attic of my mind. But then I ran across it maybe 7-8 years ago. And it blew my mind. I listened to it over and over and over. I forced my son to listen. (He was unimpressed.) I bored people at work about it. It is one of my all-time favorite songs. it has everything a person would ever want in a song, imo. It literally (actually literally, not how the kids use the words) gives me goosebumps every single time I listen to it. It's a rare thing in life that could be better than that song.

Neil Young & Steven Stills from Buffalo Springfield, David Crosby from the Byrds, and Graham Nash from The Hollies. First performance live together was at Woodstock. They only did this one album altogether; Crosby, Stills, and Nash did one self-titled album before this, and the 4 of them did one live album. CSN did more albums later, and Young, of course, had a great solo career to this day.

This song was recorded before Neil Young joined the band. Steve Stills sang the lead vocals, played the lead guitar, and played the organ. This shows why they needed Young to join, because Stills couldn't play both the guitar and keyboards at the same time live, and Neil Young had played with Stills before in the group Buffalo Springfield (see "For What It's Worth").

Don't worry, Lee -- these guys could all play everything so it's sort of pointless to try and figure out who is doing what on any particular song (although in time you'll start to learn their individual styles.) But this is one of those groups that have a very tangled and complicated family tree. They took the tight 3-part harmonies found in folk music (Peter, Paul & Mary, etc.) and melded it to flower power pop-rock, creating a sound that was very hip for the period. They influenced a ton of other musicians, even British prog bands like Genesis. They were so successful with the two albums (this and the one before) that they could sort of coast for the next 30+ years, putting out the occasional reunion album or touring together. But their individual personalities often clashed, and substance abuse took its toll. Still, they definitely left their mark!

Suit Judy Blue Eyes is a great song cycle that David Crosby wrote about his break up with Judy Collins. One of my favorites is Ohio which is about the Kent State massacre where the national guard gunned down 4 college students for protesting the war in Viet Nam. Either of those would be a great listen. The vocals harmonies were The Big Thing about Crosby, Stills, & Nash and continued to be after Neil joined up with them. There's even lore about how Graham Nash came to meet Stills & Crosby at a party and he agreed to take a stab at adding his upper range voice on top of Crosby's & Stills' singing one of Stills' songs. They all looked at each other & everyone watching on, agreed that what they had heard was magical. A new "super group" was thus formed...

The musicians in this band were all great. They were all in other bands before forming CSNY. They have so many more great songs to discover.

This song started out as a Buffalo Springfield song when Stills &Young were in it. The song was called Questions and became part of this song.

This album and this song are iconic. Stephen Stills can PLAY that guitar and the harmonies carry me back to those times.
The title track Deja Vu is sublime. And the final two tracks played together Country Girl and Everybody I Love You is epicness.
The Neil Young thing…he is on some songs, but those songs have been removed by him from Spotify.
Almost Cut my Hair is really worth a listen too. David Crosby .

Everything that comes out of Neil Young-his voice and his instrument-have his unique, unmistakable fingerprints. He was the counterpoint to the sweetness of the other three. Deja vu, truly one of the all-time greatest albums.

Great song. Deju Vu one of those rare albums with no clunkers. No need to skip except for listener fatigue. Several of the songs were in heavy rotation on classic rock radio for decades, including Carry On.
Country Girl is the one I keep returning to. The song before it, 4 + 20, is a great lead up to Country Girl, musically and lyrically.

Steve Stills is phenomenal artist. He wrote this song. He is the only artist who got Eric Clapton and Jim Hendrix to play on his first solo album. He is in the Hall of Fame for the group and a song writer.

CSN&Y is one of the finest folk rock bands ever created. One of the foremost harmony as melody bands. And they had a strong social conscience which helped guide an entire generation. Plus Joni Mitchell was a fan and dated Graham Nash (she always had great taste).

You just hit the jackpot! Steven Stills and Neil Young were in Buffalo Springfield, David Crosby in The Byrds and Graham Nash in the English band The Hollies. Their first album was without Neil. If it hadn't been for huge egos and too many drugs they would have been as successful as the Beatles! You need to listen to Ohio, Our House, Teach Your Children, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Almost Cut My Hair, Helpless, Wooden Ships, Woodstock - the list of greats goes on and on!

My Dad hated rock vocals. He didn't think any of them could sing a lick (Except for Jack Bruce. He actually came into my room one day when I was playing Cream and said, "Now that guy can sing". I'll never forget that day. 😇) BUT he did say even though he didn't like their voices individually these guys knew how to sing.
