    Those really old vintage units were made like tanks very hard to take one down. Amazing start up!

    I'm glad to see someone else who loves antique HVAC stuff.
    This is a really well built machine. I can tell by the sound of that compressor; it runs at about 1200 RPM. The new ones run at 3600 RPM or so. That would allow the compressor to live much, much, longer!
    In my opinion, I would carefully consider replacement of the compressor motor's capacitor. They often fail and end up taking the compressor with them. It is inexpensive insurance. Get a Titan HD capacitor. They are still made in USA and have a very good reputation.
    One thing to watch for; the condenser fan really needs the shroud to be in place around the unit. That will direct the air from the fan through the condenser coil, to cool it. You didn't run it long enough in this video for it to be a problem! But if it were run a long time like that, the compressor would be overloaded because the condenser would overheat.
    Really hope to see this come together. I would also be interested to see how the power use compares to a modern unit of the same BTU capacity. I would expect it's not as far off as many of the "mainstream" people would like you to believe.
    Thanks for saving and documenting your repair s to this!

    • @BackusBreeze
      @BackusBreeze  Před 5 lety +4

      Thanks David, you're absolutely right about the air flow. Though I didn't say much about it in the video, this unit requires the exterior casing, fan shroud, and the front plastic grate to be properly installed for correct air flow, both to cool the condensing coils, and for routing the air usefully into the space to be cooled. Wish the front grill wasn't in quite so poor condition (cracks, breaks, missing mounting tabs). Thanks also for your opinion about replacing the capacitor with something good quality and new. Not a bad idea at all.

      That symptom does sound like a bad capacitor (if it has one); or possibly a bad start-relay. Could, unfortunately, also be a stuck compressor.

    I've got a 1970 GM (yes that GM) Frigidaire casement window air conditioner and it's the heavy! These casements by design are heavier but I couldn't imagine how heavier yours is because of the 2 evaporator coils and huge compressor. Mine has a big Tecumseh AJ compressor and 2 fan motors. Both are standard fans no blower wheels. It amazes me how these old units get right down to business cooling. Like yours mine blows ice cold pretty much instantly. I've got videos of it up on my channel if you're interested.

    I personally worked on about 3,000 room air conditioners from 1979 to 1990 and I never saw one like that one. I worked on some Westinghouse air conditioners that would have dated from the early 1960's. That is a true tank of an air conditioner a real strongly made unit.

    I didn't know the O. A. Sutton Company made air conditioners. Ottis Sutton was an aircraft engineer himself, who experimented with propellers and aircraft propulsion. He was the inventor of the ducted fan propulsion system and tested it successfully on a model aircraft in Oklahoma back in the 1920s. Vornado was the name of this model aircraft.

    • @BackusBreeze
      @BackusBreeze  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the info. I've been a fan collector forever, thus I was aware of Vornado being an OA Sutton product, but had no clue they made air conditioners. Saw my first Vornado window AC unit this past year and it has 50's some style to it but this Westinghouse (being a casement design) is uniquely different, and the fact that it's a re-branded product is interesting.

      @@BackusBreeze Westinghouse was having union problems in the early-mid 1950's. That is why they contracted with O.A. Sutton to manufacture their window air conditioner line for 1954-56. In 1956 Westinghouse started to make window air conditioners again for the first time after the war and by 1957 Westinghouse was making their entire line.

      It's much lower pressure and much thicker tubing than modern stuff - which leaks out after several years whereas this still hasn't after decades.. and CFC's don't harm you at all, this is R-22 as well which was commonly used into the 2000's and only has 5% the ozone depletion of R-12, aka Freon.
