  • The Nikon D70s can be found for under €40 nowadays but it still maintain a lot of the core features and functions of a DSLR. So I gave it a try and personally I really enjoyed using this camera and would like to share my thoughts/experience with you guys about this camera (both pros and cons). Whether if you're looking at getting this camera or just l want to know more about older cameras in general, I hope you can gain something from this video! :-)

A nice review, David. I've owned a D70s since it was introduced in 2005. Like many of the D70 series cameras, the body started getting sticky to the touch. I finally solved the problem by cleaning it with 99% alcohol. I had to rub it with the alcohol and a clean cloth about a half dozen times but it finally permanently removed the stickiness. To restore the shine I used Armor All wipes. I did the treatment almost 10 years ago and the stickiness never returned. (If you can't get 99% alcohol, anything over 92% should work.) Bottom Line: My daily camera is a D850 but about twice a year I pull out my D70s and D5500 for local landscape photography. BTW, I love older Nikon cameras so my next purchase will be a D2X or D3X. I love the beefy feel of a DSLR with built-in grip.

Omg, I have an old D70 and that stickiness you're talking about was awful. I managed to get it off eventually with a bottle of left over hand gel, but at first the cloth or paper I was rubbing it off with was just sticking to the camera body making it even look worse. Good to hear it never returned though.

The D70 came out with the 18-70/3.5-4.5 as "kitlens" into 2004. Into 2005, Nikon introduced the subtle (AF & display, now 2" vs 1.8" size) enhanced D70s. 2006 was the year, the D40 was being released. I still shoot with my D70s occasionally, as well as all my other DX Nikons, up to the D7000, and FX D700. I do own the D100, D70s, D40, D60, D80, D90, D700 & D7000. 70 to 99% pure alcohol does just make those Nikon (D)SLR bodies look dull & matte. The ordinary D70 could being updated to D70s level (minus the 0.2" bigger display) via Firmware Update 2.00 since ever then it was being released, so with 2.0, technically both D70(s) are the same, the 70s only features a very subtle bigger (still way small) display.
I used a black face mask and hand sanatizer to clean the stickyness of my D70s, as well as all other (mostly F80, F100, F90x) bodies to get rid of the vaporized adheasive, which caused the stickyness out of the faux rubber layer.
A real drawback from the D70(s) is the extraordinary small OVF, it's a dim-lit small pentamirror OVF, if you're wearing glasses, one is not getting happy with that small OVF. The one year later released D40 does even have a bit bigger OVF, still a pentamirror, the D40 does have other issues, only 1/4000s shutter, no BiM, and 3 AF points. The successor of the D70(s) was the D80, with bigger, all glass pentaprism OVF, 11 AF Points, 10 MP.
Info: The D70(s) doesn't have WR, weathersealing, that's a false comment into this video, David. Same goes for the other DX bodies under D7000 level, the D7000 does have some (way basic) weathersealing, but not onto D200/D300(s) level.

I'd like to add, that the D70 came out into 2004, the subtle enhanced D70s into 2005, not 2006. Furtherway, the original D70 could being upgraded with FW 2.0 to the D70s level - same features, but D70 does have a 1.8" LCD, whileas the D70s does have a 2" display, so negledible difference only. D70s does have FW 1.00, and there was never a FW update being released. I do shoot with Nikon digital since 2002 (D100). Film - F90 (1992).

@@marcp.1752 - You can restore the shine of the D70s by using Armor-All wipes. My D70s was very dull after removing the stickiness with 92% alcohol so I used the Armor-All wipes. After wiping the body down with 5 or 6 wipes, the luster returned.

I have my D70s since 2005. Still great into 2023+ and beyond. It's never the gear, never the AF speed, never the megapixels. It's only about your very own, creative vision.

This and the D70 before it, seemed to ‘usher in’ the era of modern digital imaging, especially for the average person. I believe the D70 listed for just under $1000.00? I knew a friend that after having his Canon F1 film cameras and lenses stolen, switched to Nikon, and these bodies.
Anyone that would give this Man a thumbs down, must have rocks for brains.
Great stuff as always David. I have yet to view one of your videos with the ‘revised’ Intro. I’m almost scared to?! 😯😆 Stay safe and Happy Shooting!

I am sorry to hear about your ur friend who got their camera gear stolen… that’s a really bad experience…
Yeah, the D70 was almost a thousand dollars when it was realised (give a take). I’ve also done a video and a budget camera challenge with the D70 a month (ish) ago… 😅😂 They both produce nice results, sure, not up to modern standards technically speaking but still produce great and unique results when use properly. ☺️☺️
My new intro isn’t too different from the current one, just new clips, fonts and effects. But the same beats, soundtrack and duration. 😅☺️☺️

I know this video is old but one point you didn’t mention (unless I missed it) is that one really cool thing about the D70S is that you can use an external flash (SB-600/800) even mounted on, up to 1/8000sec which allows you to do some pretty creative flash photography even in daylight (freeze motion, add drama, combat the sun etc) that a lot of other newer even professional cameras cant do as most cant use flash past 1/250 maybe 1/500

Agree with all your comments and observations - I have several D70's, d200's, D300's, D700's, D7000 and D2X. I find its my camera of choice just to take out and snap away, so long as you don't want to crop or really take once in a lifetime images its a great tool.

This was my first serious camera and I loved it, first shot in full automatic but in time, I learned enough to shoot full manual mode. I still love DSLR cameras, so my last purchase was a D850. Times have changed, of course, so in the meantime I bought my actual walk-around-and-keep-it-with-me camera, a Z fc with both kit lenses. It's light, small, and it delivers. Gotta love Nikon.

I also think that the original D70 had a common technical issue (BGLOD) that was resolved in the D70s as well. One reason to go for a D70s over the original...

I have the same camera. It is nice with the 6MP CCD sensor, it gives wonderful photos. I use it to experiment with CCD sensor because there wouldn't be a difference anyway if I only post my photos on Instagram (Instagram compresses all images to 1MP I think). Pair it with a good glass and you are good to go.
But there is multiple problems :
    - green tint that have to be corrected in post. White balance also
    - card corruption : it happened to me two times and I had to recover the files, it's frustrating. Apparently, there is a problem with a cable related to the compact flash card that doesn't work well. The pin connection also can be bent
    - never go above 400 iso : noise
    - the screen is so small and inaccurate. You cannot judge the final image until you go home in front of your computer

So did I. Put on a manual flash and it works at 1/8000s shutter speed, although my Yongnuo 560 flash starts to get darker compared to the background beyond 1/4000. D40 can do the same thing. D70, 70s and D40 all have a global shutter, just like the latest £6000 Sony.
