  • This week's video is all about throwing the different components needed to create a teapot on the potter's wheel. Starting with the angular body, then the quickly thrown lid and finally a little group of spouts, made in multiples so I have some options when everything is assembled. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch.

    If you'd like to watch a video that shows how a teapot is made from beginning to end, you can find it here: • How to Make a Pottery ...
    Timecodes:
    00:00 - Introduction / snow
    00:49 - Using hot water to throw with
    01:00 - New pairs of callipers
    01:30 - Explaining the bucket kept next to me
    01:48 - Preparing stoneware clay
    02:19 - Throwing the teapot body
    07:13 - Setting my callipers
    07:39 - Throwing the lid
    09:12 - Throwing the spouts
    13:25 - The thrown pieces, which once leather hard I can assemble.
    My wadding recipe is: 50% china clay/kaolin, 50% coarse alumina hydrate. Mix together slowly and then combine with water very slowly, as it seems to turn to a liquid very easily, so add less than you think.
    The gas kiln is a Rohde KG-340, my potter's wheel is a Rohde HMT 500 and my electric kiln is a Rohde TE-200.
    Thanks for watching!

    I blow glass, and recently bought a set of old calipers from ebay. It's so nice to see old, and clearly well made tools (unlike the new ones in similar price range that just looked poor quality). There's a lot of witness marks and shiny edges to it, the points aren't necessarily perfect, but for me they are ideal, because there is very little concern about breaking them, and it allows me to carry on using a tool that has survived many years

    I’m glad the calipers are living a new life with you! I also appreciate how much you show the cleaning up process as part of the whole endeavor

    The little calipers you found is really cute! I found an old metalic calipers but I guess it was not designed to use with clay... it got rusty T_T
    I gave it a special treatment and will be more carefull, did you have the same problem once?
    Thank you for your videos, they're really inspiring and informative!🙏
    Have a nice break!

    One quick question.
    What is the other clay in your tray? Would it not contaminate your usual clay body when recycling?

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  Před rokem +1

      It’s a clay I’m testing - but it’s stoneware that fires to the same temperature, so I’ll just really thoroughly mix it into my usual body and maybe it’ll work and produce a small batch of slightly strange coloured pots. Or they’ll all break terribly…

    A lid gallery with less height likes to tip over when pouring liquid. You can fit your lid tightly in order to avoid that. But, that will cause a vacuum and require a tacky hole in your lid. I assume yours have a hole. Let me check back now.

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  Před rokem +7

      They do indeed have a hole, nearly pierced into the middle of my lids, a feature I rather like from a design point of view.
