Joanna, I truly know the emotions you felt bidding for the first time. I was 26 in 1987 when my dad passed on and a week before he died we'd sold quite a few yearling steers and Dad was going to go and buy young replacement stock that following week. A few weeks after the horrible trauma of dad's passing I had to step up and bid for livestock for the first time at the Warwick Sale Yards to restock. I was still really sad and gutted as well as very nervous but I knew it was what Dad would want me to do and with much trepidation I did it and purchased 15 replacements and another 10 a week later. It became very much easier in the ensuing years although even then in the back of my mind I always wished Dad was there too. You are handling things so very well and capably Joanna. Well done.

Thank you for sharing with me Jeff, there aren’t many people around me ( if any ) in my real life circles who know what it feels like to be in this situation/ position so it really does help me to hear your experiences and know that you have been through it and overcome the same challenges I face. Grieving is hard enough but the farm always needs you, so you can’t hide away it’s a case of face every problem head on! From firsthand experience it’s very tiring! …. But day by day we get through x

When selecting a ram or bull there are three things he really needs to have, Guts Buts and Nuts, Then you look for the other features you want in your flock. Your plan worked well select several and come home with second choice. It is confirming your judgment is sound when you are outbid on an animal. This makes the auctioneer take you seriously and will be looking for your bid on the next animal. He will have an idea of your limit and when the big spenders have their purchace complete you come in and get your second choice and go home with a great buy.

    Hiya Joanna, & Nick,
Well, you've done it, you've flown on your own, you are the wings now, well done, he looks perfect, Red Head indeed. I'm sure he'll do his best for you, along with Vlad the Impaler. Okay, I can see why he got his name too. So, you grew a pair and did the deed, dad had a lot of good friends who can and will help you when your need is greatest. Proof of his popularity and yours too as they trust you to take over from John. If you keep doing well, more faith in yourself will grow, as it should. You will get there, in fact, you are there just can't see it yet.
    Stay safe, Steve...

@@DaleFarm sounds like you've learned the biggest lessons, how to learn, how to ask. Once you know them then moving forward, well it's not easy, but it does happen, and happen at the right time. You did a wonderful job at the sales, you looked, but you also listened and then thought. I taught apprentices for years and got them to listen, and then think... and that is when real learning can happen. So again, very well done for choosing Red Head and then buying him. But also not staying in the bidding for that other one, I'm told that is the worst thing you can do, staying in for a bid too far.
It sounds like you've learned a lot of the lessons of life and commerce when to do something, but also when not to...

Thank you Giuseppe it was a nerve wracking day … I managed to get into a position near the ring to bid and I used the action catalog - holding it up when I wanted to bid. Nick said I wasn’t very subtle but I didn’t think that mattered … it was more important for me to be clear … and to stand on my own two feet and take charge of the situation!

Hi I've not left a comment before, but I could appreciate your nerves and feelings of not being confident when bidding, I don't think they are always the most welcoming of places either. Just out of interest, when given advice before buying, is there a certain age you should gone for if you want it to go to work immediately? Thanks for sharing your experiences with taking on the farm by the way, long may you thrive and enjoy it. You have to keep on, and I think your Dad would be very proud.

@@DaleFarm fingers crossed, post tuping, it is essential in my limited experience to bring the ram back in or keep a close eye on him. Also be careful when the sheep left to do start reducing in numbers, as the rams might no longer want to be friends if in the same fields. Best of luck and look forward to more videos.

looks like a good well bred ram has plenty of power about him ........is he a year and a half old ?
youdid right to put them in a small space as a young ram that strong will nearly always fight with the older one ........we used to buy ram lambs as they would not be strong enough to fight with the older rams but some did ... and betimes it was the end of them ......
best of luck with him ....... !

Thanks Cara, someone said to me use the value of ten lambs at the sale as what you should spend on a tup. Just a guide and I liked that idea! We had 6-750 in our head as a price to pay. And we got him for 500 so I was happy with that. I tagged more lambs this week .. Sale is Tomorow! I took your advice and tagged the left ear this time 😊😊

Hello Joanna there is no set way of bidding just do it your way and that's it. Wave your hand who cares. There are some who think, how should I put it, like to secretly bid thinking that's gives them the upper hand but in reality they push make themselves pay more to stupidity if you understand what I'm saying. Have a good day bunny hunny.
