    Tom, I appreciate the work you have done in sharing information about filmmaking. I am what you call a real beginner (drone pilot, cameraman, producer) and the learning curve is steep. Thank you, this is what I need to determine if I want to pursue a career path and take college courses. Your tutorials are essential to my success! Hope I can follow in your footsteps.

    It's funny how we would never normally shoot outdoors without ND or matte box/hood, yet we take shocking liberties with GoPros and expect amazing results! Thanks for a great tutorial, and for reminding me that the same rules apply regardless of what type of camera you happen to be using.

    I just got my Zenmuse Gimbal for my Phantom installed today. This video is a big help with some areas that I still had questions like Wide Angle, Motion Blur and completely resolving jello. I haven't flown my with the new gimbal but at least I know how an NV filter can help and I won't solely depend on the results of the gimbal alone. So I feel more confident. That's for explaining exactly what causes the problem and how to resolve it complete. I think it's important to mention the gimbal tho.

    I like the idea with the shade, but for filter I would use some proper polarized filter. This ND foil often it's quite smooth and could cause some optical distortions.

    Thanks for making this video! I have about 40 flights under my belt and never experienced the banding/jello on my P2 with GoPro Hero 3 Black and H32D Gimbal, but I guess I never shot in today's lighting conditions either. Very informative and thanks again!

    • @WillBarnwell
      @WillBarnwell Před 10 lety

      Right. I was speaking more to the banding but recently upgraded to 3d also. No jello so far at all thankfully. Mine came with anti interference board and I'm actually testing today in the same light conditions that gave me the banding before. Hoping for good results!

    So your filming in GPS mode? Also flying/ learning to fly without GPS in ATTI mode helps to capture better footage. I have had some really bad experiences with Phantom in GPS mode. 1. If during the flight the amount of satellites decreases under 6, Phantom will automatically go from GPS to ATTI mode... That may cause a lot of trouble. 2. If your flying close powerlines, large metallic structures (buildings etc.) be ready for Phantom getting Craaaazzyyy with capital C.

    i did a flight today, nice sunny day, I have a go pro hero 3+ black, fitted to dji phantom 2 with a zenmuse h3-3d gimbal, shooting at 720p/100fps and still get lines and jello. couldn't understand why, because i though the gimbal dampens everything (and it clearly doesn't...)
    will try the ND filter

    Great! I also found that polar or nd filter minimize jello effect.
    BUT!
    At the same time the video will be soft, not so sharp than before.
    I don't speak about motion blur while moving (this is normal, and i like it),
    i speak a general sharpness reduction even when hovering with my copter.
    Do you notice something similar?

    I would think you should use wrattan ND filters meant for camera lenses rather than ND gels designed for studio lighting or window tint. I think you'll find that the wrattan ND filters are much more optically pure and give a more accurate color balance. Only problem is that they seem to cost around a hundred dollars each these days. Maybe better to buy from one of the companies selling them ready to slip on the lens.

    Doesn't footage shot with ND gel suffer from IR pollution? Basically with glass ND filters, visible light is heavily reduced, but IR rays hit the sensor like without filters (so, increased exposure time due to the visible light reduction, brings up the unwanted red/magenta dominant in the shadows)... It seems like the gel ND suffers even more of this problem. :(

    I've tried this mod- and with each cut out ND filter gel circle I place into my lens protector the gopro 3 video image gets darker and darker yet I thought the gopro was supposed to automaticaly slow the shutter speed down in 'lower light' and therefore keep the image at the same level of 'brightness' even with the ND filter 'shades' in place (the clips with teh ND filter/s in place in teh video aren't darker than those without them)..? Do I need to change a setting in my gopro 3 camera to ensure it automatically changes the shutter speed or otherwise what do you think is going on? Thank you for anyone's feedback

    • @TomMakesThings
      @TomMakesThings Před 9 lety

      That's exactly how its supposed to work. Put the nd filter n camera will automatically slow down exposure so u have more motion blur/less artifacts but yet the video is just as bright as before.
