Thanks Joe, you are easy to follow. Still working up the courage to try carving. Great talking to you in Sheridan.

For me carving is the fun part. Does takes practice of course. No need to break the bank with a very expensive knife. I would recommend getting one that has an adjustable shaft on the yoke. That will allow you to fit it to your hand size. Most come with a blade. $15 or $20 will get you a good quality knife. Get one and start cutting. Main thing is don’t get frustrated and give up. You can do it. Just stay with it.

I have the knife and the basics. I have tooled a couple things(acorns and leaves on a phone case and cut a pattern into a belt) just get frustrated. Learning by CZcams not many that I know of near Seattle for learning.

@@mikeberberich2674 Amen to the frustration part. I think just about everyone has been down that road. Hang in there. Remember Carnegie Hall.

I’ve been leatherworking for almost 50 years (since Cub Scouts) and I still am not pleased with my results. However, each project gets a little better.

Do you use a punch for your corners? If so, what brand and size? As far as carving I use a Duane Watts knife. The type that the blade itself swivels. This has really helped my cuts to be smooth. On long cuts I may opt for a regular knife. I have also gone from a 16oz maul to a 12oz maul for beveling. For me it’s gives more control and less tiring. More than enough weight for the bevel. As always I enjoy your videos and help very much.

I need to update my you tube ad blocker, I have a 24 minute commercial before your video starts! Ok, I reloaded the page and now it's a two minute commercial, followed by another one minute commercial .

Is that a Barry King Veiner and mulefoot? What sizes do you use the most or are those in this pattern?

Absolutely love the videos for the tutorials. Ive learned alot about tooling but if i could just leave one criticism. There are alot of mouth noises, swallowing sounds and clicking in between words that make it almost impossible to listen to. Maybe lower the sensitivity on the mic you are using. Just a thing i noticed as a person who is very sensitive to certain noises. Its not just this video. Just want to say that it isnt going to deter me from watching because the knowledge is more important than my personal grievences.

Joe, what size bar grounder are you using? I was planning to replace my craft tool with Barry King size 30 or 45. Can't decide which size. Any suggestions?
