- Create your very own window sun screens!
Are you tired of excessive sunlight streaming into your home, making it uncomfortably warm and causing glare on your screens and furniture? Sun screens offer a practical solution by blocking out the sun's harsh rays while still allowing for natural light to illuminate your space.
In this video, you'll see the process of making custom sun screens that fit perfectly on your windows.
I'll go over the materials and tools you'll need for this project. Don't worry; they are readily available at most hardware stores. Once you have everything you need, there will be step-by-step instructions, making it easy to follow along.
Not only are sun screens effective at reducing glare and heat buildup in your home, but they also help protect your furniture, carpets, and artwork from sun damage caused by UV rays. Plus, they add a touch of personalization and style to your windows, enhancing the overall look of your living space.
By making your own sun screens, you not only save a lot of money compared to buying pre-made ones but also have the freedom to customize them to match your home's decor and your specific needs.
*NOTE*
The frames were replaced as some were either warped or previously damaged. Plus they were just a personal preference for the bronze color over the tan color. Plus plus I needed new frames anyway to make the new ones for the top windows. And most importantly I was able to share how to make the frames with all of you!
Thanks for watching!

I’m over 70 and no intention to make these. So WHY am I still watching? Just enjoying your work and the music
Ha! Happy to contribute to your enjoyment!
SAME!!!! I’m a crippled 64 yr old and will not be doing this but im looking forward to seeing all your vids! This was fun to watch!😊
Sounds good...hopefully you like...thanks for the comment!
Ha! Me too! Well done maestro.
Liked and subscribed! Not going to make these, but love the video!
The algorithm must've read my mind that I was thinking about how to make a replacement screen for my kitchen window. Great video. Finally, something different!
Crazy! Thanks for the comment!
This production is awesome!!!! The idea, the video, the music. I love it
Ahhhsum! Glad you liked...thanks for the comment!
What a fun tutorial!
Thank you!
Excellent choice of music.
Really? Received mixed reviews on the tunes although mostly good...thanks for the comment!
Great intro music I was in a BAD mood and I clicked on your video and started laughing out loud! You can't be mad when you're laughing!
This is true! Glad it helped a bit...thanks for the comment!
Wonderful musical accompaniment. I very much enjoyed it.
Thank you!
Wow! I like how you made screens for the windows that didn’t have them before. Thanks for this video. I think I might be able to actually do this for my windows. I loved the music!
Awesome, my pleasure, and thanks for the compliment!
This is the best do-it-yourself video I've seen and that I need. Love the music too 🥰 Tysvm!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed!
Amazing work! Love the music too!! Thank you!
For sure! Thanks for the comments!
That's a nice, neat job, and I loved the video style from the sophisticated music with the beautifully matched pacing to the lowbrow cartoon handwave at the end! This made my morning. 😂
Happy it made your morning...thank you for the kindly worded compliments!
Cool idea! For most people, without risky frame disassembly, you can just take the old screen off by using a boxknife to pry the rubber spline, and then the old screen fabric follows.
Good tip and thanks for the comment!
Loved the music, and it's a bug screen at the same time
Thank you and yes!
I did something similar, and YES it makes it a lot more comfortable. Less electricity used (and paid for$$) because the air conditioner is running less.
Yes! I agree...thanks for the comment!
I spray painted my screens white on the west side of the house to block out that heat. After a few years the paint has started coming off but a cheap spray can of paint will work wonders. I can also see good from inside to outside and it is hard to see inside from outside. The original screen was black.
Cool...thanks!
Great video! Good instructions! 🤗
Why thank you!
Since you tore apart the mesh screen anyway, why not just remove the mesh and replace with the sun screen material? Would've saved time and money.
Looks great though. Excellent video!
You can absolutely do that too! I had some frames that needed replacing anyway and wanted to show how to make frames for those who want to see that process...thanks for the comment!
Brilliant! We get direct north/south on our bigger windows and it's brutal in the summer. I had no idea you could build a screen. I'm definitely trying this.
Sounds good...hope it works out awesome for you, thanks for the comment!
Looks great!
Thank you!
U coulda used ur old screen frames... just take the old screens out. Replace with new. No need to buy new sides when ya already had them
Right you are! Unfortunately, some of the old frames were warped or needed to be replaced, which is why I decided to just replace them all to be consistent.
Maybe he wanted the color to change white to black
Yes...I do like the bronze color better...personal preference of course though!
My thoughts exactly, and spray paint black if that is what he wanted.
Thanks for the comment!
Well done sir!! Looks great!!
Why thank you so much!
Needing screens and just came across your post. Shared it with my son😊
Awesome...hope it was helpful!
Excellent 😊
Thank you! 😁
Please what is the name of this music piece? I love this video even though I cannot make solar screens. I do not have the tools
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Liszt...thanks for the compliment!
Excellent Bravo! Thank you!
Thanks for the compliment!
Great production, well presented! Off to Home Depot!
Good luck and thank you for the compliment!
Great Job, thanks for the wonderful music, it was quite entertaining
Glad you enjoyed...thank you!
Also plant trees in the east and west to block the morn and afternoon sun. It also keeps the ground cooler
Cool...thanks for the tip!
Yes, but don’t make the mistake the gardening company I hired years ago to do my landscaping made. The sunniest side of the house (south) is shaded by a silver maple tree that has big roots headed right into my foundation 12 ft. away, it’s killed all the grass above the roots and I have to have the tree removed and then someone else will have to remove the stump. 😫 Very expensive mistake and how they will keep the tree parts from hitting my neighbors’ landscaping and my Tartarian maple and my house as they cut it down remains to be seen. Also, the heavy equipment will have to drive over a big portion of my lawn and sprinkler system because my driveway is far away from this side of the house.
Oy that's horrible...hope it turns out good for you...thanks for the reply!
I like your video and beautiful music
Thank you!
I loved your intro. I loved your video. I loved the info and tips. Thanks
Awesome! Thanks for the multiple compliments!
The front of my house faces east and windows (and average temps) don't create heat but I replaced the screens in 2 windows with solar screens to add privacy during the day because you can't see in from the outside. At night close the blinds.
👍 Thanks for the comment!
Thankyou for your video, I am especially hoping someone can tell me the name of the music. My family had a wonderful pianola and we would play this piece regularly, pumping the air with the pedals. It was wonderful music and this has brought back so many memories. Many thanks.
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Liszt...glad to hear it brought back positive memories for you!
@@some-dudes-views Thankyou for your reply, we are now listening to Herbert von Karajan conducting this piece and it is a most welcome interlude from politics, etc etc. You have made this family very happy.🥰
Wow! Such kind words...glad I could contribute to the happiness of your family!
Nice job. You make it look easier than it is :-)
Thank you kind person!
Nice video. The screens are a lot more sturdy if you get metal corners and cut the frames at a 45 degree angle. That blade you used did a great job!! Also, you can cut the excess screen from the inside edge just above the spline for a cleaner look. Nice job!!
Thanks for the tips and comment!
How Would You Connect The 45 Degree Ends Using Metal ⁉️⁉️⁉️
I think 45-degree screen frame corners (which may be sturdier) would not work in this case, since he planned to reuse the saved mounting clips, which are needed to re-install into the existing window frames. Thanks for the tip about where cut off the excess screen. I need to replace mine, and really like this idea using denser screen material for south and west facing windows. 😊
Yes exactly...for sure and thanks for the comment!
@@georgecharokee4570they're metal corner pieces that hold the corners together and they last longer and are sturdier. They will work on any frame. Just Google metal corner frame pieces.
high quality video
Glad you liked...thank you!
I might try this for our skylights
You should...thanks for the comment!
Great idea!
Thanks!
This is exactly the way I think: "If I do it myself, I might make a fool of myself or I might save $400 bucks." It usually is the latter.
Thanks for the comment!
Good work, thanks to God you are not speaking if you spoke you creat a big story
Thank you!
Nice job! And I liked the music 🎶. Neat trick using the envelope opener to cut the screen. Can you get different degrees of darkness with that mesh? And colors?
There are different colors and degrees of darkness available. My preference was 90% for maximum heat block and I like the look of the darker shade. I've seen tan and gray screens on some homes too. Thanks for the compliment!
Good work, thanks to God u are not speaking if u spoke u creat a big story
For sure! Thanks for the compliment and comment!
Where’d you get those clamps for the saw that held the piece in place for cutting?
Home Depot!
how much did it improve your electricity? Also, did it make the interior very dim?
If you mean how much does it cut the need for the air conditioner...I would say a huge amount. This time last year, I would have the air conditioner running for a fair amount of the afternoon and now I have not even turned it on once yet. It does decrease the natural light coming in but that also depends on the amount of sunblock fabric you use, I personally like it though.
We had bad winds. Probably add Velcro for the top windows.
Yes...extremely strong fasteners were used...although the surface was cleaned with alcohol they supposedly lock on even when wet or dirty...thanks for the comment!
I'd have pulled the splines and put in new screen on the old frames. Also, need to tighten the screens as you go to avoid rippling.
Have you considered a giant sail shade for cutting down sun on the wall? You can also buy 40% shade cloth (for gardening uses) to help block a bit of the sun. Requires good anchor points in case of wind.
Thanks for the input!
Why did you need to replace the frame? Why not just rescreen the old ones with the new shade screen?
Check out the other comments on this...thanks for the reply!
Check out the **NOTE** in the description!
Heya, great job. Where did you get the 90% sunscreen fabric?
Home Depot online last year...been a bit lazy! The brand is Phifer SunTex 90.
OBSERVATION..nice vid, but that music. Ugh
Ya some like the tunes, some do not...perhaps I'll change it soon...thanks for the compliment on the video!
Nice video, or you could just buy the room darkening window film.
Thanks for the advice and compliment!
Nice when it's only the first floor. What do you do when it's on the 3rd floor or higher?
Call the Fire Department and ask to borrow their ladder...kidding...ya that's a tough one...maybe acquire a friend or neighbor who don't mind the height?
Upper floor screens are removed and replaced from the inside
Sounds good...thanks for the reply!
Why did you replace them?
Read the NOTE in the description...thanks!
Please come to my house and do the windows here.
Haha...thanks for the comment!
You know all you had to do was pull out old strapping and screen and replace with the new ones .. cheaper
You're right...however I had some frames that needed to be replaced and needed new ones for the top windows anyway and I was able to share how to do that...thanks for the comment!
Exactly, i thought that as well. But, i see the response, so that makes sense.
👍
How is sun screen different from bug screen?
Sun screens focus on blocking the sun’s rays/heat (denser fabric)...bug screens focus on keeping insects out (lighter fabric).
Nice background noise choice.
Glad you liked...thanks!
Missed what you did in the end try again.
Old frame's ?
Some of them were warped or damaged and needed to be replaced anyway...just went with the new ones to keep the look consistent!
Doesn’t the dark black screen attract the sun’s heat, wouldn’t using silver or white screens be better for reflecting the sun?
Agreed on your take of the lighter color screens. However, I have noticed a HUGE difference in the interior of the home being much cooler (still have yet to run the A/C even with high 90° temps) AND I prefer the black screens as they simply look better from the outside (my opinion of course)! To each their own though, thanks for the comment!
@@some-dudes-views thanks for the explanation, you are right though it looks sharp with the black screens.
Thanks for the compliment!
@@jeffbaca1173 Black is the most popular screen, they're solar screens, they keep out up to 90% of the sun. The color is irrelevant
@@bjbhehir cool thanks for the education, still kinda blows my mind. I purchased Mylar and with Velcro I put it up on my exterior East/South windows that don’t slide, it keeps the rooms a little cooler, I gotta save for a window air conditioner.
Why not just reuse the old frame?
Some of them were in need of replacing as they were damaged.
A standard window screen restricts around 50% of your air flow through the window... just saying... not sure if this screen is worse.
This screen is much more heavy duty and a bit more restrictive on air flow...I also notice the tiny gnats don't get inside anymore where the standard screens didn't block them...another bonus!
@@some-dudes-views Thank you. I just wanted to add a possible negative in moderate weather areas.
Thanks for the reply!
MUSIC is too L...
What's L? Loud, long, low, lame...haha. Thanks for the comment though!
Y not paint the trim . less work and $ . spray paint it all .
Just a preference...not a fan of spray paint...risk of peeling or chipping later...thanks for the comment!
Great job, but way to much work, time, and money. I went to one of our stores where they buy pallet loads of stuff dump it on tables, charge $5 the first day, 3 the next , $1, etc til bag day for $5. Went several times on dollar and bag day and now for around $10 I have 15 rolls of window tint and clear and frosted designs for say bathrooms for privacy. I can do different windows in how much light I want spray with water and a squeegee.I am redoing all windows, but the tints usually last about 10 yrs. I found higher uv ratings this time. We only open our windows a few times in spring and fall so window tints work best for us. The screens are great but why not just reuse the original frames? Or is the darkened screen thicker and wont fit in the track as well? And also the screen looks like less air would flow through. Cute video introduction and good tutorial.
Personal preference is all...just not a fan of tint film...some of the old frames were compromised and needed changing and I kept all frames consistent with each other...and yes the new screen is much thicker...I have the windows open all the time in the cool mornings and evenings and I get plenty of air flowing through (not to mention the privacy remains since it is the screen in place and not the window in the open position)...again just personal preference...thanks for the comment!
🎉
😁
Production Music is almost unbearable
Haha! Most folks actually like it...understood not for everyone...thanks for the reply!
Wonder why he didn't recycle his old materials, they seemed in decent condition. Sorry I just don't like seeing things get thrown away.
Just didn't have a need after new frames took their place...thanks for the suggestion!
OBSERVATION..nice vid, but that music. Ugh
Perhaps not the best choice...maybe I'll change it soon? Thanks for the comment!
@@some-dudes-viewsIt’s not that bad 😁
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks!
@@some-dudes-views I loved the music! It made your video a huge step above all other videos about the same subject..
Waste of money all you had to do was stitch the darker screen over the one that was already there and have a double barrier dust blocker
Check out the NOTE in the description to cover this...thanks for the input!
Why not reuse the screen frames?
Thinking the same thing, just re screen with sun shade fabric.
