Confront your past, but be wary of the answer you might find in Michael Haneke's excellent 2005 thriller "Caché", starring Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche and Maurice Bénichou. Cinematography by Christian Berger, music for the review taken from David Julyan's score for the 2002 film "Insomnia". - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I read this theory somewhere, years ago, that it was the director himself who sent the tapes to the family. It makes sense to me. It would be impossible for Georges to not have seen the camera on the street when he passes by it (the opening scene), if this was indeed a real camera with a real cameraperson inside the story.
I think making theory about that sort of things isn´t the more relevant part in aprecietting art, is like that people that make deductions about what is in the box in pulp fiction, It is entertaining but not sustancial to the meaning. If you say "It would be impossible for Georges not to have seen the camera",I think you could take cinema more seriously as a form of art and representation. the camera may be hidden or something like that, it doesn't matter, what is important here is the text and subtext that the film is trying to communicate on an intellectual and in a experiential level.
@@niko3g Exactly.
Haneke is successfully playing with your expectations you've learned mainly from Hollywood movies.
But doesn't that completely dismiss the end scene of Pierrot and Majid's son conversing? It wouldn't make sense for them to even know each other. Pierrot got home right after they received the first tape, he went "missing" on his own terms, AND knew about his mom and Pierre's implied feelings for each other which he would not have known about if he or Majid's son weren't spying on their dinner at the restaurant (in which he immediately goes missing afterwards). Majid's son said "I didn't 'send' the tapes, I dont care if you believe me or not" hinting that maybe Pierrot delivered them and he filmed them. Also Michael Haneke said himself that the truth or "smoking gun" lays in the center of the scene at 20:39, which shows Pierrot walking to the car with his dad, the first scene that breaks the "Oh this is a recorded tape" illusion.
Edit: also in the beginning of the movie Anne says the drawings look like they could have been drawn by a kid
Hold on, it would be impossible for George to not see the camera pointed toward his house when passing by? You really can't imagine a scenario where the camera could be hidden? How about a large open backpack sitting on top of a vehicle with the camera inside but filming through the opening so that the bag would shadow over and disguise the lense and camera body. Such an easy explanation there. Plus if the camera was smaller it would only be more reasonable for it to be disguised one way or another
I think Majid sent the tapes, it was too particular for it not to be him. I think he made them to persuade George to the apartment and possibly frame him for murder. I think the colonialism is displayed perfectly, George is literally wealthy and figuratively, shown by the abundance of books. Majid’s apartment is dingy in comparison. At the end we see the two kids talking as if they knew each other, I don’t think there’s any ominous intent here. I think this shot was to close the generational gap and show that even though Majid didn’t grow up how he thought as “proper” his son was still polite and well spoken, even going to the same school at George’s son Pierrot.
The only thing that made me question Pierrot was his questioning his mother about an affair. Possibly him and Majid’s som were working together with different goals in mind, Pierrot wanting to catch his mother cheating and Majid’s son to get back at George… This led to Majid killing him self, maybe in the elevator scene Majid’s son was projecting that anger of the games he played with the tapes leading to his fathers death.
I like how the director leaves it open to interpretation but it’s either one or the other, Majid made the tapes or his son did. There’s no artistic way around it, no fourth walls. The end scene doesn’t hint at the answer it just frustrates the viewer.
Saying theres no artistic way or fourth walls in this movie is ignorant, the simple fact the video camera used to record Georges and his family is the exact same as the one used to capture the film proves that Haneke's intention is to make you think beyond who is recording, potentially that Haneke himself is the one sending the tapes
Also worth noting that the lack of trust in communication trickles down to Pierrot. Georges lying and withholding information from his wife, breaking her trust, while neither of them even bothers to talk to their son. The first question asked is if Pierrot or his friends were in on it, but they quickly dismiss it. Him being angry towards his mom because maybe he knows what's going on and is angry that he's not in the conversation, plus him running away for the night? Maybe it was his way of wanting to be seen. I honestly believe that Majid had nothing to do with most of it, I think his son wanting to see on film what it would look like to see Georges face when he saw his sad father, just as he wanted to see in person after his father died. Georges won't admit shame or show it on his face, just as they won't allow Pierrot to know about the tapes.
Who knows, amazing movie.
I just watched it today. It blew me away. Nice video, it brought me new perspective on the work!
These are great. Perfect mix of recap and theory, thank you!
Great video, thank you
Super insightful and concise vid. Love to see you do kinda more popular films. Subbed :)
Really nice video! It was short, objetive and help people like me have a better perspective of the film. Keep it up!
Haneke was the imposter who shot those tapes and got an innocent man accused and killed. He also confessed that it's based on his own story.
Haneke itself sends the tapes
Amazing movie. Blew my mind.
Gracias
The two sons sended the tapes, god damn it. They both met in the credit scene
You have no idea what the conversation was tho. What if that scene was to show us that the kids had no idea of the connection between their dads and they're actually school acquaintances? What if the algerian son spoke to him to call out the past and results of his fathers actions but chose not to take revenge and instead just let the kid know what took place? And ultimately perhaps indeed they may have worked together to make them
@@matt2993 I'm pretty sure the algerian son did know the boy
@@strainmix2287 yes but in WHAT CONTEXT?! Thats the part thats keeping my mind up all night after just watching this a couple nights ago. So damn good!
@@matt2993 seems to me like the algerian's son had some sort of kind of revenge going on towards Mais but not to his son. Pay attetion in his eyes... many mixed feelings, very different expressions from his father; still shattered by the betrayel, which reminds me of the kite runner tomatoes (?) scene.. the self sacrifice (throwing fruits) in prove that in sometime indeed at least one of them really believed.
Just watched it, there are some crazy scenes in there, but most of the movie is just talk. If you wanna learn french, then this movie is a good start..
Some people in these comments are quicker to reflect on and mourn the loss of an evening spent watching a movie they didn’t like than the loss of hundreds of Algerians in Paris, and many more throughout the Algerian War. If you didn’t like the movie because you think it has nothing to do with you, there’s a good chance the movie is literally about you.
What’s an “algerian”? And why should I care?
Did he really say, Micheal hanneke?
so, who in your opinion sent those tapes? has to be the son right?
Here's what I said to someone else who asked me a few months ago: "Thanks for watching! In a way, I don't think the identity of the tape sender matters in terms of the thematic message Haneke was going for. But if you twisted my arm and I had to pick someone, I think my money would be on Georges son and Majid's son, as in the final scene where the credits are rolling you see both of them meet subtley outside of the school, implying they've potentially met before. I'm speculating but that's my best guess!"
@@MrStillSmiling ahh thanks 😌 i appreciate your response
yes you are right. the end scenes clearly clarify this. The son does not want to stay with the parents and majid's son talks with him. only majid's son could have put the camera in his house and the fact that he knew all the locations from the workplace to home clearly meant that it could have been him and he was being helped by George's son.
@@brajeshsingh2391 Another beautiful touch is the Pierrot's (Georges sons) room. He is of another generation who is multicultural and critical of colonialism, as shown by white rapper eminem poster and zinedine zidane poster. Zidane is of Algerian descent.
@@bibtebo plus majid knew the grandmother was sick and said "it's obvious"
Great film. Great ending. Maybe half the audience notices the "clue"?
So... Nothing makes sense and we known nothing about anything... Boring movie.
I think the mom cheated.
Yeah that scene meant Pierrot received/watched video of his mom cheating. Do you think it was Pierrot that did the filming?
New Age Scam Artist solid theory and shows the sins of the parents being uncovered by the youth, how the new generation indicts and puts the previous generation on trial kinda.
@@adamarens3520 Ah that's a really good take! Great insight!!

Why do foreign films have such bad expositional dialogue? It’s laughable but they always get praised by pretentious critics.

Watched it and didn't understand anything, it was really boring
But I am the same after as I was before so the film has no meaning. Its as bland as the child-like drawings. As a mirror it does reflect but poorly... dimly
I want the 2 hours of my life back. Guy spends the entire movie trying to figure out who is sending the tapes, gets no where and the movie just ends. I would look deeper into it and think about the meanings but it was so boring and terrible that the movie doesn't deserve it. I don't care about a algerian massacre that happened in france 60 years
@ justin oliver. I think it was good movie. in fact this commands your attention throughout even though it was 2 hour long. the screenplay is very smooth and the acting is good. French cinema is old school and it pays a lot of attention to interaction among characters which enhances the narrative. but yes the fact that mystery remained unresolved was somewhat disappointing but I think there are clear hints as to who sent the tapes. If you can understand that then cache was a great movie. Yes its not a classic but a great and well made movie.
Thanks for proving how much of an idiot you are.
You're entitled to your opinion of the movie, but that last sentence was really unnecessary.
I couldn't agree more (except the last sentence). The only thing you know when the end credits are rolling is that you won't get your money back.
Time is non refundable lad you cant get any time back
Great summary of a totally stupid film. I don't care if Haneke is a great European filmmaker. This film sucks big time as it has no ending. Avoid at all costs!
It's called an 'open ending' and it's actually a rather common thing in TV, cinema, theatre and literature...
Nah, just see movies like fast and furious. So you don't have to force your brain to think harder about the great meaning of such a beautiful mystery movie like Cache.
