      I think attempts have been made for 2716, and currently they're attempting to restore 2789 or 2700.
      Honestly I think we need 4-8-4 #614 sooner than a Kanawha, because 1: we already have two 2-8-4s in use. and 2: 614 has more of a history.

      They are restoring 2789, but 2700 is sitting outside of a museum in horrendous condition. It was part of some restration project in the 80's that didn't fall through.

      @pmrailfan7521 Před 10 lety +3

      614 should be in that line up! And, off the topic abit, but still C&O.... if UP can restore a big boy, why cant one of the two remaining C&O Alleghenys be brought back to life? There are literally over a dozen C&O locos surviving. How is it NONE of them run? Even 614 is mothballed (and Im sure, will be forgotten about). It should be against the law for our national treasures to be treated this way.

    • @pmrailfan7521

    • @manga12
      @manga12 Před 10 lety +1

      PM Railfan would be nice but there is only soo much money to go around for the projects, I wish some of them could be as for good news though at least 611 and the bigboy are comming back to life in a few years, and restoring an allegany, well where would they do that the loco is absolutly huge, and not other railroad has the facilities on hand like the up to take on the massive locos, it would be a mamoth undertaking but Oh I would love the all and all bigest ever built to return to the rails I think they are both inside from the elements too, so that would be good, and if they ever did try to bring one of the alleganys back to life well I would be soo happy I would problably drool or jump up and down or lose other body functions, lol, though I must ask if she is heavier why is she slipping the drivers soo often, usually it would mean more adheasion to the rails I would think

    • @pmrailfan7521
      @pmrailfan7521 Před 10 lety

      manga12 As a fact, all locomotive slip on occasion. Either due to mishandling of throttle, weather, rail conditions, and/or even locomotive conditions. Or a combo of the above. However, the H8's were not known to be 'slippery' locomotives. Their great weight was actually more of a hinderance in where they were allowed to run, more than the fact that they ever slipped. As for factor of adhesion, weight is a pivotal factor, but must always be figured against horsepower aswell.
      In other words, you can either build a loco too heavy to ever spin the wheels that cant hardly move, or one that has so much power you can't get her started, she is so slippery. It was always an engineering balance. Alot of variables go into design like axle loadings, weight of recip. masses., etc etc. Can't really explain it here. Just know the H8's could pull the stars from the heavens. The only two surviving are under roofs if you didnt know. I saw the one in Md 4 years ago. She looked ok. Sitting next to C&O 490! Another loco that SHOULD be operating! Dam what a beautiful loco!

    • @manga12
      @manga12 Před 10 lety

      I dont know I just hear that she was always slipping where ever she went, even with a great weight maybe even more so then the 765 npk that she was filling in for.

      PM Railfan Well, it's certainly true that the Southern never had a 2-8-4 class, but 2716 did look good in the black passenger livery. It's not exactly a "stomp" to railfans, but more of an experiment to see what a 2-8-4 would've looked like if the Southern Railway had owned any. Don't get me wrong, 2716 looks great in C&O livery, but so many other engines wear black. It wouldn't hurt to see her in the Southern livery again. You know, to give some variety to the 2-8-4 class. Seeing how the two operating 2-8-4's are already black.

    Great footage, I'm guessing it's been digitally remastered as well. All good cosmetically on this K-4 but the lettering. The fonts are right but numbers and letters were WHITE in the steam age, not yellow. For some reason museums love to trim C&O locos in yellow. I can only guess they do this because they mistakenly think the trim on the locomotives would match the yellow trim on the old passenger cars. Wrong.

    • @PereMarquette1223
      @PereMarquette1223 Před 10 lety +1

      You gotta admit though, it does look good. The colors of the lettering is also the issue with the last two surviving PM berks. 1223 was delivered with white lettering and 1225 was delivered with yellow. Eventually they all got yellow, but the debate on which is correct or better looking continues, just like for the C&O K-4 2-8-4's.

    • @pmrailfan7521
      @pmrailfan7521 Před 9 lety +2

      ***** Pics of 1223 and 1225 new at Lima show 1223 came with white and 1225 did come with gold. However, both were the small PM font. Not until the relettering did they all get the large gold lettering. Either color, to be correct, theyd have to be smaller in size to equal what was delivered. A factory pic of 1229 shows by now Lima was using the gold - large font.
      Odd color combination seeing how they came with white walls and trim. I tend to prefer the last incarnation - large gold letters.
