  • In this video we discuss the use of liquid fuel stoves, specifically the MSR Whisperlite International.
I used liquid fuel stoves since 1990. Although gas stoves are now the most common fuel and stove types, liquid fuel stoves are not completely obsolete. In this video, we have a look at the setup, preparation, and operation of liquid fuel stoves.

I have been using a small butane torch to prime my whisperlite international, instead of that little cup beneath the stove.
I apply the torch for a solid 60 second, then slowly open the valve, making sure to keep that copper tube nice and hot.
The stove will start with blue flames instead of those sooty greasy yellow flames.

never thought about that, great tip, I will give that a go. Any particular torch you are using?

You have to use this liquid stove when you are in the mountains and temperature under 0 °C.

I have the MSR Dragonfly it simmers well and I like being able to use car gasoline.
The screw for switching the jets to burn Diesel is frozen, so I have to stick with gas.
In America it is against the law to put fuel in a DOT approved container, so you need to know where it says DOT approved on the fuel bottle.
I had to find another gas station because the guy didn't believe me and was a jerk.

Thanks Marc, some great insights, specifically in relation to using liquid fuels in the US. I'm familiar with the Dragonfly and would be my preference if I were to replace my fuel stove.
