  • With Warren getting so excited about the new Bolt Action coverage we have planned he roped in Alessio Cavatore from Warlord Games to have a look at five of the best German Tanks of World War II. What do you guys consider the best tank of this era?

  • @xXThePanzerXx
    @xXThePanzerXx Před 8 lety +23

    actually, fun fact, the Stug was actually THE most effective fighting vehicle in terms of killing tanks of the second world war and was arguably one of the most effective fighting vehicles overall of the second world war.
    also a little learning for those who don't understand why the Stug or other things that seem like tanks are not actually tanks. An armored fighting vehicle's designation is determined by it's battlefield role. A tank is an armored, tracked general purpose fighting vehicle. A tank fits into every role on the battlefield, from supporting infantry, to assaulting infantry, to anti-tank, to ambush and to even being used as a form of short range artillery support. The Stug is, as alessio said, a tank destroyer or an assault gun(depending on the variant of Stug and its armament) which a tank destroyer is designed SPECIFICALLY for taking out tanks and an assault gun is designed SPECIFICALLY for assault or supporting infantry. many other types of fighting vehicles and their rolls exist as well. But that is why just because something is armored and tracked doesn't mean its a tank.

      +anthony sauls my favourite is the panther G version.

    • @xXThePanzerXx
      @xXThePanzerXx Před 8 lety +4

      TheLordhorationelson The Panther ausf G was a great tank, arguably the overall best tank of the war. However it was very costly and time consuming to make. I would make the argument that Germany would have been suited better to just mass producing Panzer IV ausf G - J variants so they could get some numbers on their side (as they already had the advantage of technology) but then again there is a lot of contributing factors and many things could have effected Germany's victory or defeat in the war and honestly as a historian, in my opinion the time consuming and cost of a Panther isn't very high on that list. So I suppose that was all a moot point, but I just wanted to explain a bit why im not the biggest fan of the Panther, I personally prefer the Panzer IV ausf G - J varients. still the Panther is a magnificent tank though, a marvel of engineering, way ahead of its time.

    • @Anlushac11
      @Anlushac11 Před 8 lety +4

      Look up the costs, Panther cost a little more than the PzIV and a heck of a lot less than a Tiger. Tiger I was originally designed with a turret much closer to the Panther turret with 75mm L/70.

    • @xXThePanzerXx
      @xXThePanzerXx Před 8 lety +1

      +Anlushac11 I have already known the price difference and yes you are very correct the Panther wasn't that much more expensive than the Panzer IV. Here however, is my point. The Panther tank cost around 117,100RM and around 6,000 Panther tanks were produced. The Panzer IV cost around 103,462RM and around 8,553 were produced. That means instead of the 6,000 Panthers the Germans could have produced 6,790 more Panzer IVs. Now 790 more tanks isnt a big deal but its still a much bigger deal than you think.
      The Tiger I cost around 285,800RM and there were around 1,347 built. That means that an additional 3,720 Panzer IVs could have been produced with that money.
      The Tiger II cost around 320,000RM to produce and there were around 492 produced. This means an additional 1,490 Panzer IVs could have been produced.
      Provided my math is correct that means if the Germans would have stopped with the Panzer IV they could have produced an additional 12,000 Panzer IVs. Now it is true that the Panther was a superior tank for not much more cost, however, the point is that the Panzer IV was fine for the job, it was equal to or superior to anything the Allies had. However the allies had a massive numerical superiority due to the fact that 49,234 Shermans, 35,120 T-34/75s, and 4,016 Cromwell tanks (as well as other tanks and tank varients) had been produced by the Allies during the second world war. While it is true that German troops and tank crews were generally superior to Allied counterparts the massive numerical inferiority meant that they needed to have all the numbers they could possibly get on their side, Since they failed to win the war quickly which was their only other hope.

    • @arnekrug939
      @arnekrug939 Před 5 lety

      @@xXThePanzerXx The problem is that it doesn't just take money to build a tank but also steel, machinery and fuel to run it, not to forget you have to train a crew to man it.
      I doubt Germany could have provided these things for thousands of more tanks.

      Recently watched a documentary on Wittmann's last fight. The historian came up with some excellent information and surveyed the location of the action. His conclusion was that Wittmannn's Tiger was destroyed by a Sherman of the Sherbourg Fusiliers, a Canadian unit. The fatal shot penetrated on the left rear radiator plate, if I remember correctly. I was rather surprised, but on seeing the evidence, it was pretty compelling.

    Some hints to pronounce German:
    1st: The letter "z" is pronounced like (ts) rather than a soft and humming (s).
    2nd: The "th" is pronounced like a hard (t) rather than the English "th".
    3rd: "Ausf." is an abreviation for "Ausführung" which means as much as "build, version, variant"

    The Pz. IV had the least effective armour of the medium tanks of WWII, even though the concept of medium tanks wasn't really around at the time. Even the Sherman had a bit of sloping to its armor.

    • @gabewilson5845
      @gabewilson5845 Před 9 lety

      Well, Even if that were true, it was the main stay of the German army and later models mounting more powerful guns ( Read 75mm KwK 40 L/48 ) which could reliably pierce the armor of tanks like the Sherman, T-34 and other various allied tanks. It was also smaller, more mechanically reliable, faster, and still sufficient against even late war tanks.

    • @Algebrodadio
      @Algebrodadio Před 9 lety +1

      TheKsalad , SKull Crackin The Pz. IV was designed in 1939 and was first deployed in 1940. At that time, it was the best tank around. The Pz. IV still had thinner armor than the British Matilda and French Char - BUT it had a huge 75 mm short barrelled howitzer and was nearly twice as fast as the western tanks. For comparison, the largest gun mounted on a western tank at that time was only 37mm and struggled even against the thinner German armor.
      Because the Germans saw such success with the Pz. IV in France and Afrika against the Western Allies, they started a huge production run and improved it with several varaints - first up-gunning it, then up armoring it - and it performed very well against western tanks. However, it was completely outclassed by the T-34/76 which it encountered first in the Summer '41. But by that time, the Germans had already produced so many of them that they were forced to rely on it.
      The Pz. III has a similar story - they were obsolescent by 41 - so the Germans began to convert their Pz. III's into assault guns and their Pz. II's (and some captured vehicles) into tank destroyers. Much later, they did the same with the Pz. IV. For comparison, the Pz.IVH was a rough equivalent to the M4A4 Sherman in terms of armor and firepower. But because it was a much earlier design, it's engine and drive train was over taxed by the heavier conversions, so it's maneuverability was much poorer than the Sherman's.

      Panthers can rip through them if it's an open battlefield and I'm pretty sure morale will kick in and make them perform worse because of the sheer size of the Panthers

    • @mikeb6572
      @mikeb6572 Před 9 lety +1

      pierre dayon The Panther is a superior tank for sure, and the all German crews were by far the best of the war.
      I agree that the Panthers 75mm is better than the Soviet 76.2mm (by 1943 i'd imagine all T-34 had them by then), but like I said, the sheer weight in numbers the Soviets put in the field had tipped the balance.
      Can't find any info about T-34's with a 57mm gun. Could you tell me where to find any info on about it?

    AUSF is actually the short version of Ausführung and is something like Type in german,so it would be Panther Type A.Also StuG III means Sturmgeschütz III,which Alessio correctly translated into Assault Gun,the word Sturmgeschütz is made out of Sturm which means Storm in englisch and geschütz which means cannon or Gun in german,so Sturmgeschütz would mean something like Stormcannon,but Assault gun sounds way better.
    And could you please make more Bolt Action Videos? I like Bolt Action but to me Flames of War is totally boring....also i dont want to spend 50 Dollars on 3 Tanks that i can inhale if i am not careful.Bolt Action looks much better to me,way better game mechanics,better miniatures,and for a very very good price,not that overpriced stuff from flames of war.

    Where's the king tiger at in this nowhere. I'm mean that it should be in the top 5 you take the armour of tiger and the slope armour of the panther and it's long barrel gun change it in a 88 and you get the kwp 43 8.8cm thus making the most fearful than to exist during the war.look up its kill to death ratios.

      Problems arose when it came to getting it into combat. Reportedly in one panzer company there was 75 tiger 2's (aka king tiger). 2 weeks later 1 was lost to enemy fire, and 43 had to be left behind due to mechanical failures off-combat.

    Panther could not go full speed the Germans put too light a gear box in the tank. The allies were willing to lose 4 Shermans to get a rear shot at a Tiger I, with the fifth. Good tanks but I prefer the Mk IV.

    The stug actually sucks. one 85 m shell from an Is1 hits the driver view ports the driver, gunner, commander dies leaving the loader alone. but the stug is actually awesome if you talk about ranged operations

    • @NicerDicerSmart
      @NicerDicerSmart Před 9 lety +2

      The stug was the mist effective tank destroyer throughout the war for germany. Easy to hide and mobile, and with a decent gun it was perfect for ambushes in the defence role it had from 1943 on...

      @itsthelepto Před 9 lety

      Michael Gäfgen yeah and if it sees a ruskie zis-3 and gets hit in the drivers viewport, 3/4 of its crew dies

    • @NicerDicerSmart
      @NicerDicerSmart Před 9 lety

      pierre dayon dude, a tanks effectiveness is not measured in survivability if the view port. Speaking of which is a weak part in any tank, early is2 models could and were destroyed by Panzer 3s by shots at the drivers hatch/viewport, the t34 wasn't and still an is2 is way more capable in means of both surviving hits from Panzers and destroying them.

It was great when it worked, thats for sure, but the Panzer iv ausf. h proved to be a decent tank with Schürzen side armour and the long 75mm gun so why dont have a couple of those for the same price ?
      ( still 88mm for the win though ^^ )
