Also known as "that bigger engine you'd always see double-heading trains because Stepney was too weak".
I love most LBSC locos, and the E4s are amongst my favourites.
I hope they return Birch Grove to steam one day, preferably in Marsh Umber.
Very cool. I've always liked the design of the E4, and not just because it looks like an extended E2, it just looks powerful and so beautiful in that olive green.
I say a updated E2 just remove the trailing wheels and we have Thomas in a way that is better then his E2 design
She's barely been out of steam and I already miss her! Great class. Learnt a few things from this! The more you know eh!
Terrier55Stepney i hope she returns soon
same hear a lovely loco :-(
Aww, wait, she IS coming back, right?
The E4 was always a good engine
I’ve driven it in T:ANE
Heyyy
She's a lovely loco! She has a surprising tractive effort of 20,000lb to so packs a punch.
Can't wait to see her back in service
Such a nice looking class of tank engines. Shame there's only 1 around.
Probably my favourite bluebell engine
Piano tanks. You learn something new everyday.
interesting nick name piano tanks. Great work Chris!
Great vid. One bit of trivia, Birch Grove is the only surviving LBSCR engine that wasn't designed by Stroudley, although that'll change when the replica of Beachy Head is completed. Didn't know the enginemen nicknamed the E4s "Piano Tanks". Amazing what you learn every day! Wonder what's next in the SOLE SLIP series. Fingers crossed for Blue Peter or No 251.
don't forget about engines like the rocket or mallerd.
Lovely class, great history as well.
Great engine to work on: lovely big comfortable cab. Sorely missed as a medium sized engine
Was lovely to have a ride in the cab with you Chris last year. Beautiful engine indeed
Saw her just this summer. She's a beauty.
What a beautiful engine. Would love to see her run.
These videos never dissapoint!
Lovely engine. One of my favourites. Thank you for doing this.
She looks like a really nice loco :D Wish I could see her in real life! Great video Chris! Enjoying the sole Slips :D
Shame she's out of service for repairs and a repaint. What a beauty!
I got an awesome OO gauge model of 473 "Birch grove" and I'm thinking of buying one of the SE&CR P class models plus the Southern livery SE&CR Birdcage coach on my layout.
I do miss seeing "Birch Grove" in action at the Bluebell, I hope the locomotive will return to steam in the near future if possible.
1:54 My favourite line, because it always makes me laugh.
Educational and awesome! Well done mate.
Nice one Chris Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
That was gutsy. Chris said 'E-Class' and expertly avoided referring to THAT E-Class.
NextEevolution I thought he was referring to the E1's.
NextEevolution Thomas Xd I'm learning a lot by trains (not by Thomas but watching this I still like trains and my childhood)
Ever considered SOLE SLIP-ing Peckett 1900 The Flying Bufferbeam?
Birch Grove is a favorite of mine.
Besides that single E1 that was built, this is closest thing we'll ever get to seeing an E2.
Very impressive as always, Chris! :D
She looks smart in Southern Green, but I'd like to see her repainted in LB&SCR Umber, which does look smart.
Ieuan Briers Like What She Was in The 2000 TV Version of The Railway Children?
LB&SCR Umber would be great. Although I'd like to see one in Caledonian Blue with yellow typography and lettering. It's a beautiful colour and worked well on Bluebell.
@@jayk-pianist7532 tat's very true
bluebells forever!
Greatly improved over one of my favourites the E2
Wow!
it's weird to think that The LNER,LMS,GWR, and SR always get the fame mainly the LNER and LMS but I think it's sad people undereastimate other british raiways.
It’s a beautiful engine! Too bad she’s been withdrawn because of firebox problems
I have a question:
Why didn't they kept the LBSC Livery and paint anyways?
maybe they just had extra paint lying around in that colour and decided not to waste it?
@Dani Rijnsburger that's very true however it makes sense because of how popular the thomas and friends show is it makes sense people that watch he show but only just know the "names" of the trains instead of their real classes.
What about blue?-just kidding LOL
Closest thing we have to thomas
Guess what they are the same because of the fact that Thomas was rebuild of the e4 is accurate in the railway series Thomas comes to breakfast
@@Ghost_train_1915He was never an e4 what are you talking about
Year built:1898
When do you come to examine our IOW locomotives?
This engine looks more like a real life Thomas than an E2. And it's actually useful.
So this engine is the closest thing we have to an E2? Just a question (NOT TRYING TO BRING UP THOMAS!) .
Well if you take away the fact that this was: better engineered,
better looking,
more powerful,
and is still around without the help of a certain little blue embarrassment and his " friends".
Yeah pretty much.
There is a functional E1 somewhere that was built but yeah. This is about it
I've long wondered why the E3 through E6 Classes were produced before the E2 Class.
(As well as LNER's Gresley A3 & A4 Classes being produced before the Thompson and Peppercorn classes which bore an "A2" in their designation)
The A2 was an NER pacific that was trialled against the A1s. Ultimately the A1s were better and only a few prototype A2s were built.
Hi, sorry to be ignorent but what does 'Sole slip' mean?
ah right, makes sense now, thanks
And SLIP is an anagram for his main series, Steam Locos In Profile
Brother of Thomas (e 2 class to e4 class)
Hold up, the E4s were to big for the isle of white? Holy crap, this makes austerity 0-6-0s look like freaking Union Pacific big boys!
This is the closest we can get from the real Thomas
