before this country slander trend, there was a "the internet in a nutshell" trend, which had basically the same templates, but the text was more about users of different apps, etc. it seems like around a month ago people have decided to use this template in a different way.

Part of why the "Slander" memes are so good is because they incorporate some fairly new, yet quality meme templates, like the "least x" or "strongest vs weakest". These formats also have the purpose of defining a layer of society through an individual, which is perfect for this meme.

The best part of slander memes for me is that they let people laugh at problems in their society instead of being doomers about them. One thing every country has in common is problems, and being able to laugh at a country's problems with someone on the other side of the world brings people of different cultures closer together.

One of my favorite memes ever is a slander meme of my country. Even thou it's insulting every single region of my homeland, including my city, the place I grew up in and am very proud of, I laughed insanly hard. I had every right to be angry at these insults, but I wasn't it was ACTUALLY funny, because you can tell that whoever made it has expireinced the country's culture, food, geography and people. Country Slander memes are, paradoxically, the most endeering type of memes a person can see, while still roasting the absolute hell out of your home and everything you know

    • @doomyboi

They're also fantastic resources for people who don't live in those countries. It gives the rest of us this view into the mindset and inner workings of the world hiding away under that colored splotch on our geography book maps. Even if the stereotypes themselves are just stereotypes and not to be taken seriously, it's still really fun to find out things like how Molise is Italy's version of the USA's Wyoming. Little things that help connect the world we don't know with the world we do.

Another reason for the success of slander memes could be the ironic background music. The three most popular songs for slander memes (I think) are the Powerpuff Girls theme, Romance Sengen, and sped up Industry Baby. The Powerpuff Girls theme adds a layer of mischief to otherwise bleak problems, Romance Sengen being a happy-sounding song contrasts against the harsh reality of the slandered content, and Industry Baby being sped up just like the memes are makes the problems feel less serious and easier to laugh at.

All those Australian ones featured: so hilarious, trust me as an Aussie.
(Take them with a grain of salt, they're stereotypes)
00:00: Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, the Ireland of the south; the stereotype is that since the island is Australia's smallest state (26th largest on Earth), there must be inbreeding (I cannot confirm nor deny, as a Taswegian)
00:05: Devonport is the largest city on Tasmania's north coast (Launceston is the largest in the north), and it is where the Spirit of Tasmania ferry (rather cruise ship) comes from Melbourne (Geelong).
Every country town pretty much has a reputation for not having much going on, and Tasmania is seen as sleepy, so the boat being the most exciting thing is the joke.
00:10: I will have you know that Lonnie invented the modern notepad.
    End of story.
(I actually didn't know there was a drug reputation there, but there are drug busts so maybe that's where it comes from; or it's saying that Lonnie isn't good [even though it is mate] and you have to be drugged to think so).
00:15: Melbourne is Australia's soon-to-be largest city, and it is known as being the 'cultured' and foodie city (compared to Sydney, which is called snooty and uncultured, but we country-bumpkins all know their rivalry is just the battle of the snoots).
Along with this culture, the main thing is coffee, which is supposedly some of the best in the world, and mix this with the green (hippy/communist) image of inner-city Melbs coffee-drinkers, and you get the joke.
00:47: Don't worry Cairns, I think the Far-North is cool.
Those pesky South-East... I actually don't know much about Queensland's inner relations, except for their country folk, world's oldest rainforest (where songbirds evolved) up there (us Tasmanians competing with that, if our rainforest survives) and biggest reef...
00:50: This one is actually painfully depressing...
Townsville is near Cairns (by "near" I mean a few hundred kms away), and Great Barrier Reef tourism is quite big in Australia, and it's the main industry for many towns up there.
Unfortunately, our former government had a bit of a history of 1). Denying the reef is in danger, and lobbying the UN to not say anything, 2). Do nothing to protect the reef, ignoring the worst bleachings ever on most corals, and 3). Making the situation much worse with [alleged] corruption preferencing fossil fuels as the highest emitters per capita (not including being the biggest exporter), and basically risking this wonder of the world and all these people's livelihoods.
00:56: Ha-ha. Brisbane is the 3rd largest city in Australia, located in that backwards state of Queensland.
Brisbane has a reputation from that state's stereotypes, as well as having things associated with the Gold Coast, etc.
One story I heard once was that Queensland rejected daylight saving (we should too), but with the reason that if you lengthen the day the sun will be too strong, or something like that. Don't trust me on that, I don't
00:59: Gold Coast -- don't know much about that specific subject matter, but it is near Brisvegas, and has all sorts of nighlifey things.
I'll extend to Aotearoa/New Zealand too, across the Ditch.
01:35: So, NZ is known for having many more times sheep than people (Australia has more total, but less per capita).
These flocking sheep symbolise the largest city folk, and I assume this is a common thing in both countries, that city-dwellers will take every holiday as an opportunity to either go overseas, or go to a tourist spot in their country.
For New Zealand, that probably means less-populated areas getting filled with all these sheep
01:38: Kiwis, help me here, what is the stereotype in this lovely town? Is it just the Scottish name, like a bunch of Scots who named the place (after the original Māori names)?
Is it that they think they're more Scottish than they are?
01:31: (thank you for explaning, Braddie) How on Earth did I even miss this one, even I know this (well, that's not saying much)
You may have found that grids are prolific in many parts of the world, but for some reason here gridding is just a bit more than usual (more effort to align them 'perfectly', and enough to get the stereotype), and there tends to be debate about the practicality of grids in cities (such as numerical systems, the value of organic growth, people never developing a sense of direction...)

Hello, I’m the creator of the NZ slander video!
01:32 Talks about Southland, and that is a region which is home to lots of towns with perfect north-south, east-west grids. Basically them explaining how perfect grids are good ways of designing their towns. Examples of towns/cities with perfect grids in the region include Invercargill, Gore and Winton.
01:35 People from Auckland during school/public holidays like to flock out of their city and start populating other towns around New Zealand. This is due to the fact that Auckland has 1 million people, but also simply that everyone else in New Zealand hates Auckland.
Along with the sheep video there, correct that New Zealand is home to more sheep than people per capita. It perfectly encapsulates this meme along with a basic internationally-known stereotype about New Zealand.
01:38 Dunedin is a city that was founded by predominantly Scottish people, and is even named after the Gaelic way of saying Edinburgh in Scotland. This memes is a bit more nonsensical but is basically someone raging that they don’t have at least some form of Scottish ancestry.

      @@Braddie Oh, wow!
Thank you for that insight (from the creator, so this is gospel now).
I missed that first one, I guess you could say I dropped something...off the map (Australia leaves Tasmania off the map, the poorer version of NZ, which gets left off the world map...).
Well, New Zealand seems to be the quirkier one of us, like your advertising (Australians have been getting a lot of massive kiwi ads with assumed laser eyes), and all I can say is that I want more trans-Tasman solidarity, because I think all Australians have been a little envious of everything about NZ for the past while, and Kiwis... I don't know what you think about Australia, we just hear that lots of New Zealanders emigrate, or get stolen like Sam Neil...!
Maybe we should have a joint news network or something, so I'm not just that Aussie in a tub dreaming about being in NZ while a giant kiwi watches over.
We could create a rivalry too, like hikers in Tassie say New Zealand's mountains are like ours but on steroids except they forgot to grow gardens of Eden on the way up to their sharp peaks, or something... What about rainfall? I think New Zealand beats all of Australia (except the Daintree) on quite a few metrics there, with something like 12m a year on the West Coast? Oh wait, competition: here in Tasmania we only need 4.5m to support one of the oldest tree colonies.
Actually, our flora is just pretty closely related, except it's so sad that we actually lost quite a few species of Gondwanan plants of which NZ and Patagonia have a few species, and we only have like one of each (two Nothofagus, 1 celery-top).
Anyways... At least we have amicable relations now, and Jacinda doesn't have to scold us over being embarrassing anymore. And no matter what people say, a lot of the critique points are like, well, we just ignore those points here in Australia, we only have a few political talking points -- and so if ours are stupid, then we shouldn't judge NZ on serious ones either (except NZ does very well on serious talking points, and there seems to be a lot more political will in NZ than here, so NZ is up there with the Nordics while Australia languished trying to be more like the US).
Well, speaking of South America (what, no I wasn't), some knights in shining Llama will save us soon.
I feel like I'm fulfilling the attention-needing Taswegian again (did you know we're spending billions on: stadium, highway bridge, rainforest logging at a loss instead of: social housing, welfare, industry diversification)--ANYWAYS again, come visit the Hobbit Garden here in Lutruwita some time, I want to visit everywhere in Aotearoa at some point but I've totally already been invited. Also it's totally not a scam, I'll send you to Maria Island instead, so you can see a bajillion wombats in A SINGLE FIELD, and then you can ferry down to see Albino wallabies past... wait competition!
Who has the tallest sea-cliffs?I'm so sorry
