I have studied this song since the day it was released. Vince's version is unmatched, even by the great player above. Guaraldi's feeling and sense of timing has never been duplicated and really remains the key to pulling this song off. All other versions seem stiff and choppy. Vince Guaraldi made it flow and brought it to life. His is the ONLY true version of Cast Your Fate To The Wind.

Agreed, do you know what the official terminology is behind the competing beats that they describe as akin to patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time? I'm trying to track down some resources on how best to practice this.

Cast Your Fate to the Wind was 1963 song of the year for Vince. Great song, I loved it when it first came out.

I'm sure it was. Pretty cool growing up in the 90's as well with parents and grandparents who grew up in the 60's. I got to travel back in time with their stories and records while being a kid in one of the coolest decades. :)

I believe at 7:25 in this video, Scott is correct. Guaraldi (in the 3:10 version of his song) just goes back and forth between Ab7 and Eb7 at around the 1 minute mark in his tune. At around 1:30 in the Guaraldi version, he'll throw in a Db7 on the 4th beat leading back to the Ab7. He does do what Benoit mentions but at the end of the tune at around 2:25 to the end.

David should rewatch the video of Vince playing this. Vince didn't use his fist before the low D-flat, he used his palm on the white keys. I've also heard him use this technique (known as "palming") before the low D-flat in "Linus and Lucy".

To itsjim: it was released in 1962 but the copyright is 1961 when Vince wrote it. That might be what DB means, because that's what you'll see on your sheet music. I probably would have said '61, too. ;-)

WHERE can I get the sheet music to THIS version? There are many that I don't like, but I love this in Ab Major. I like Vince's the best though, and Benoit's second. I hate al the others.
I tried searching the net, but can't find Vince's arrangement.

The song was released in 1962, not 1961 as Dave says. I would have hoped that since he knew he was going to chat about the song, he would have done some research? David is a great guy but ya gotta get the dates right! :-)

The beauty of the brain. Musicians talk this lango so much that if your around it long enough it all becomes second nature. My dad is the same way, he can't read a lick of sheet music but you wouldn't believe it the way he talks and plays. Pretty cool.
