My wife and I were in Essen visiting a woman who had been with us in USA as an exchange student 35 years ago. We had such fun with 3 generations of her family: 14 year old son, her husband and her and her parents. We did day trips to Dusseldorf and Koln and had to force ourselves to go to bed at night as we talked about our lives, politics in US and germany and what we had done in the past. Conversations were in english until they choked up, then german until we choked up and with an occasional descriptor in french when no one could come up with the accurate word in either language. (wine and beer were were served, but no one imbibed to excess).
We felt we could have stayed for at least a year, were it not for our travel schedule. The sights were interesting, but yes, it's all about the people.

Sara, your parents are lovely people! I moved from Germany to the Florida when I was young and it was difficult to be so far away from family. I was very fortunate that my parents decided to visit once a year for many, many years. They had such a wonderful time with my two daughters and my mom often said that she was closer to my girls than to some of the other grandkids because she got to spent day and night with them. She helped bathe them when they were little and played the same Mensch aergere dich nicht game with them! They had the opportunity to attend pre-school and school functions. They participated in girl scout gatherings etc. My dad made friends with many of our neighbors. He planted plants in our yard that are sky high now and my daughters remember them very well. Hello my friends. So cool that your parents liked being in Germany. 😊
To your question about meat: Our Edeka has both options for meat. The usual suspects are available pre-packaged, but they also have a counter with a lot more options. The thing with our particular Edeka is that all the meat from the counter is Bio quality, so it's a lot more expensive than the pre-packaged stuff. I guess that is why they have both options.

      Memories:
As a child I grew up in Hamburg, in our section of the street there were: bakers, butchers, grocers (milk, butter, cheese, etc.) and a stationery and toy shop and a hairdressing salon. By the late 1970s to mid 1980s only the hairdresser, baker and stationery shop remained.
The other shops could not compete against the offers from Aldi, Penny and Co.
There are still a few bakeries, but many belong to a large corporation. Self-employed butchers are much less common and they are usually specialized. Today you can usually only find a butcher at Edeka, Famila and a few others, these used to be at REWE too.

Haha, your (grand-)parents got a much more German experience than most travelers from abroad. You've been germanized to an outstanding degree. Sara, wanna make a bet that you had multiple instances where a German word popped into your mind during a conversation with your parents instead of the English word?
Quark: yepp, *technically* a cheese, but more along the lines of taste like a slightly tangy yoghurt, with the consistency somewhere between cream cheese and a very stiff yoghurt. What I was really astonished at seeing in one of my subscribed cooking channels (Binging with Babish) that he recently used Quark in one of his recipes.
BTW: Quark is an awesome replacement for any cream cheese ingredients you might use in the States, IF you can get your hands on it. Any 'cheese cake' gets a really awesome taste from it. Same amounts, basically.
Depending on where you got your bread your parents are probably ok. Many doughs are allowed to leaven for two to three days before being baked. A good bakery usually does that. Store-bought industrial bread however use the standard rising agents, among them a turbo-yeast, that simply changes the flavor, but not the structure of the dough, and allows very quick formation of CO2. A long leavening process changes the gluten in the dough, making it much easier to digest, resulting in little to no side-effects. Many sourdoughs can even be eaten by gluten-intolerants whole-sale. Mind you, full-blown cilliac patients should still be careful.
Strangely enough, the mineralization of tap water is often better than even high quality bottled sparkling water in Germany. OK, ok, it's not the same taste, I agree. The different Sprudelwasser all do have slightly, but notably different tastes to them. But that also applies to local tap waters. I assume down in Bavaria the tap water must come either from deep wells, or even from glaciers.
"Haus" obviously means house. But in terms of a restaurant menu "hausgebeiztes" means it was 'cured in-house' ie by themselves instead of having it cured elsewhere. However, this was probably not a smoke-cured salmon, but cured in a brine, similar to pickling or marinating.
Same goes for anything else prefixed by "haus-XYZ" in a menu. These are home-made, not industrially prepared foods. Like 'hausgemachte Knödel" or "hausgemachte Spätzle" being "home-made dumplings" or "home-made Spätzle noodles".
In some cases you may also see "Hausschlachtung" meaning the meat comes from an animal butchered on the premises (under rigorous veterinary control in Germany).
Differences of solar panels: one is photo-voltaic producing electricity, the other is solar-thermal, heating water. My parents got solar-thermal plus a 2000 liter insulated layered storage tank. It uses purely physical, temperature controlled bi-metallic valves to get the specified water temperature into each layer, completely without any electronics. Water naturally forms almost non-interchanging layers of one temperature IF the differences in the temperature are marked enough. Even during the winter the sun is able to supply up 75°C water during a clear, sunny day. Which is sufficient to heat both tap and radiator water. A full morning of sun on those panels heats up the full tank even in the winter.
That however obviously doesn't provide electricity.

Slight correction: "gebeizt" is pickled, not cured and NEITHER is raw. It is just not cooked through heat, but chemically it is "cooked" - the proteins are broken down, to make it more digestible and extend the "shelf life".
Curing is done by using a lot of salt. Either in water to create a brine or directly applied to the meat.
Pickling is vinegar based, with other ingredients, that can give more flavor.

For those, that don't know what "Quark" is: It is an acid-based cheese product. So imagine sour cream, but thicker / more viscous, but not as thick / viscous as cream cheese. It is neither sweet nor savory by default. Which is why you can find it as ingredients of both main dishes, like "oven potatoes with quark and chives", and also as deserts like simply "quark with berries".
A lot of Germans put it on bread with jam on top or put müsli (typically a mix of cereals and berries/fruit) in it for breakfast.

I can say that I had a “tear in my eye”, because your dad reminds me so much to my dear American friend Mark that passed away two years ago. Mark and his wife Karen became very good friends to us over 12 years of knowing each other. They are living in Florida, we in northern Germany, but the mutual visits were always a blast. We learned so much about America and Americans, they learned about Germany and the Germans. I can remember the first time they came to us to Germany, after a long period of writing emails with and sending photos of our lives here and visiting them in their house, Mark’s wife Karen sat in our living room and said: “it’s funny, but I am thinking that I am sitting in a picture”. 😊. Viele Grüße von Markus.

Solingen is very well known to have a centuries old tradition of producing swords, knives and scissors. Nowadays they are usually machined but there are still some artisan producers.

The only left artisan knifemakers in Solingen, which are not custom makers, are Klaas and Hartkopf afaik. Böker is kind of an industrial producer and unfortunatly a few of the better ones with a real long history went out of business in the last few years because they couldn‘t find anyone to continue their business e. g. Linder and Hubertus

@@myknife_life with Böker being somewhat widely available in the States, that would be an interesting factory tour for any knife-lover visiting Germany from the US I think. Sarah's dad may have to look into it next time!

Re Easter eggs: In the "olden days" ( 50s 60s) they had paper maché easter eggs one could fill. You might still find them, mostly in paper shops. We use the foil wrapped eggs. They come in all sizes, and of course the foli wrapped bunnies in different chocolate flavours.

Hello lovely Family McFalls, nothing came from you for a long time, which of course is ok, but I just wanted to ask if everything is ok and you're okay? Your videos were sooo great, every single one.

In Germany Omas and Opas are often called with a second Name that describes them or the relationship, like i had a "Oma Berlin" obvious what that meant.. and an "Oma Wastl" Wastl was the Name of her Dog. often also Oma Firstname or Oma lastname or like in your family a Name that the little kids can speak or have a memory of.

Nice, I'm glad that your family was able to spend such a relaxing Eastern in Germany. I think we have a lot more in common than what separates us. Of course, many things are a little different but also recognizable. I found the cuckoo clock in the background the funniest, but also very cozy with you. Thank you for sharing this. I wish that you discover many more beautiful things in Germany.
Greetings to your parents, Axel ❤

Exporting and importing food is very complex. EU and US are both very protective, secondly there is a lot of stuff there is not allowed in food here in EU, but are allowed in US. So I guess that Aldi get much of their stuff produced in US. It's also very expensive to “sail” it over the ocean.
Take a thing like orange juice. Here in Europe, we get the concentrate from Brazil, and we add approx. 10 times water to the concentrate. It doesn't make sense to send it over the Atlantic one more time, and with more water in it. It's makes sense to transport the concentrate direct to US and make the juice there after Aldi's recipe.
