The video is same day and just a couple hours before the GTO crashed into the parked motorcycles a couple months back. The way the bikes were parked a few would have been taken out if he came through a little earlier. it would have got ugly

Sound good, but I cannot lap a cross plane liter bike as fast as a standard platform. The way the engine braking and power is applied is just detrimental to my particular cornering style and I could never field a cross plane R1 during race season. It may sound strange to some, but the power pulses are just not conducive to my riding style.

i have to say, the ducati v2 sound and this crossplane turbine/thunder sound combined with the beastly look of the headlights and the R1 in general are the most sexiest things you can get out there!
The sound of those cross-plane engines are growing on me! I like the "muscle" sound of the ducati V-twin, but also like the high RPM scream of the traditional Japanese flat-plane engines. This cross-plane design seems to have both characteristics. She still screams when she gets up there.
I love the how you started this video off.. The sound off in the distance, the roar of the engines.. It was suspenseful... GREAT footage as usual! You put this together really nicely! Thank you for your time and energy! My friends and I love watching them.. Everyone looked great! EVEN the DRZ! The helicopter was very cool.... I was not distracted! lol....

its fun to watch all the different riding styles and how some work better than others. i would love to have a road like this where I live. nothing we have even comes close to this place!
I'd choose an R1 over the Suzuki just for the sound alone. No other bike out there sounds like this. It's in a whole other league.

@derberlinersmurf and @ExtremeDeathman I know the crossplane tech is old, it's been used by many in MotoGP. That is why Rossi suggested Yamaha to use it when he crossed over. Because of it's success for others like Honda. But it's Yamaha's claim not mine that the R1 is the first production inline 4 to have this tech. I'm sure they didn't forget about their TRX850 which is a twin.
@The848evo The suits with the logo on the hump are older Laguna Seca models that are not sold in stores anymore. The red suit like mine in the video is the current Laguna Seca model.
@Wopadas The 2009-CURRENT R1 is the first production motorcycle to have a Cross-Plane crankshaft.
Crossplane technology, first pioneered in MotoGP racing with the M1, puts each piston 90° from the next, with an uneven firing interval of 270°- 180°- 90°- 180°. The result is like having two engines in one: the low-rpm torquey feel of a twin with the raw, high-rpm power of an inline four. Previous model R1's were inline fours.
Some of those cross plane R1s look very planted and stable mid turn. Judging by the sound of the non cross plane bikes, the new R1's engine helps compliment a calm chasis as opposed to the conventional inline fours. Sorry, I'm rambling on my observations. Great video!!!

@Thomazz46 I just bought a Crossplane R1, actually in part because of Adey's videos. I also got the Graves low-mount full exhaust for 2 main reasons: 1) the stainless steel version drops 15 pounds of weight, centralizes the mass and moves the center of gravity lower for better handling (see any Buell or the Ducati 1199) and 2) It is one of the BEST sounding internal combustion motors I have ever heard with this exhaust. I've never heard any undertail exhaust sound like this.
@apontazacpa Majority of the riders here are on Dunlop Ntec DOT tires. Running track pressures. This day I had Dunlop Q2's on running 31 F 28 R.

The blue/white Fiat R1, black Dainese rider's BP needs the most work. The red leather guy was actually spot on with the BP.

In response to your question about Dainese to Astars. My previous suit was Astars MX-1 which is direct competitor to my Dainese Laguna Seca suit. The Dainese suit is lighter and the leather has a more supple feel to it. I felt like there was no break-in period with my Dainese suit. Besides, Dainese has a more subtle cleaner look to it. Astars is kinda cartoony with all the plastic armor every where. My .02

@viasevenvai Chill, the crankshaft IS in fact out of balance ON PORPOUSE. This is something that´s been done in some bikes since years. In the 90´s Doohan´s nsr500 had the four combustions of the cilinders grouped in a few degrees, so the engine wasn´t so violent cause there was a bigger gap of time where the engine didn´t send power to the backwheel, making it similar to a V2 or a big single. It´s necessary to compensate the effects of this on the crankshaf with couterweights and balance axis.
@roossi the one you hear is a ZX10 in the vid. if you mean newer vs old, it's because of the "big bang" motor or crossplane motor they came out with in 09 i believe. not to mention the firing order and timing.

Given that 4-cyls can be put into cross-plane and firing close cylinder arrangement, I wonder about changing the firing order on a 5 cylinder. 1,1,1-2,1,1-2, or take the 5-cyl crank and making the middle three journals on one plane, and the outer two journals on another... We get a growl on a 4-cylinder, so a 5-cylinder must do something similar.
Gotta love that awesome crossplane sound.... deep, mean and menacing.
Slicks are only good in hot conditions. Once hot they do feel amazing, but it's not worth the risk on the street when today's street tires are offering grip levels comparable to DOT race tires from 3 years ago.
The last scene with the two R1's with single shorty exhausts.. Very Beautiful. I would own a R1 for street only unless I did a major diet on it and revamped the suspension. Then maybe I'd track the bike.

@viasevenvai The crossplane concept means losing a few hp on the higher sector to have a wider and more powerfull middle sector because that´s where the average rider is at most of the time. The reality is that the average rider wont go for an R1, he´ll go for an FZ1, and on the other hand it´s lost 20 hp to the S1000RR and 15hp to the ZX-10 because it can´t rev up so fast and high due to internal balance and doesn´t have the torque on the middle sector of an 1198 because it has 200cc less.

since i heard cross plane for the 1st time i decided this will be my next bike. it is music to my ears when i ride!
Any R1 after 2009 is crossplane. Any of the ones in the video that have the deep guttural v4 sound are crossplane. The special edition Fiat R1 in the video is a pre-2009 and has traditional firing order and high pitched sounds like a normal I4.
Love the crossplane, they remind me of small displacement V8's in terms of sound!

@viasevenvai Don´t worry, I might not be explaining myself properly. Of course the crankshat is balanced by adding counterweights and balance axis, what I´m saying is that this "unnatural" configuration makes the crankshaft heavier, which is worse for revving up fast, but this bigger inertia improves the middle range and makes it an easier engine. The balance axis take power from the crankshaft that otherwise would go to the rear wheel. A 180º crankshat is simpler and lighter, and more agresive
Oh yeah! There's some awesome sounding bikes there... I would sit on that corner and watch all day... but then I'd be disappointed I didn't ride all day. Haha

they all sound nice. i actually kinda like that throaty tone the r1's have. kinda reminds me a Duc in a way. has a lot to do with the exhaust too. r1+ akrapovic = pure awesome
@junior12343 For the 09-10 R1's they are using Graves, and Akrapovic. The Kawi ZX10 had the yoshimuras. I'm not sure about the Rossi replica and the moto bike

The best balance (not perfect though), and the simplest structure for an in-line four is one combustion every 180º. If you go for something else, the crankshaft will suffer bigger torsions that you have to deal with. It´s not better or worse itself, it´s just a design decission. In my area, the proffesional motor publications have compared all SBK´s since this R1 was released and has been placed in the last always, because they´re judged with SBK standards, not because they´ve friendly engines.

@aracaen If you go to about 58 seconds in there's a guy tailing them on what looks like a DR-Z400SM. I maybe wrong but that's the dirt bike noise.
I like the R1's with the side exhaust conversions on em. Those blue dianese leathers are pretty fucking hard too. And, gotta love the Kawasaki's up in there!

@RikunoFilms Yeah I understand your concern. Its not like a car where you are protected in a crash. On a bike its you and the road. Your bike but more importantly, your life is on the line. But its just really hard to sell a bike right now in this economy. Buying the 250, I would probably get stuck with it for a while. I could lose way more than 200 bucks.
