What's Up With The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus Altissima)

  • Last year, I found a large Tree of Heaven up near the cabin. I applied a two pronged approach to destroying it. First I girdled the tree to stop the flow of nourishment up the phloem and hormones down the cambium. This alone will kill the tree while it stand erect on the stump. This is a convenient way to get good, dry firewood after about a year. Secondly, I applied mixture of triclopyr and diesel fuel to the trunk from the ground up to about 18 inches. This wasn't necessary but it did drive an extra nail in the coffin. The diesel fuel is a carrier that soaks the solution into the tree bark, ploem and cambium.
    About a month ago, my friend John and I took down a larger Ailanthus in the back yard of our Heartwood home. I let it lay there for a month and did not mow the surrounding area. I expected to see a rash of suckers and sprouts as a result of this totally mechanical and traumatic method of removal. Sure enough. In this video you will see that the whole back yard was covered in Ailanthus sprouts. The tree from a year ago died peacefully without generating new growth.

      @@Perasperaadastra787 that is unfortunate. If glyphosate is available or products like Roundup, Tordon 101, Pathway, then you could use them with a girdling or frilling (hack and squirt) technique.

      Hi Darrin! Under the Ohio CAUV (Current Agricultural Use Value), we get a huge property tax break for having at least 10 acres tree crop value. In order to participate, there are requirements based on the type of agricultural use of the property. In our case, we must make an effort to eliminate all invasive plant species like, Tree of Heaven, Multiflora Rose, Autumn Olive, etc. The forester who walked our property and wrote up our plan provided us with a boatload of information specific to the content of our property, along with instructions and resources on how to do the work required to meet and maintain the CAUV. So this is a work in progress and a continual learning experience for us.

    • @woodruffwoods
      @woodruffwoods Před 2 lety

      @@WaynePolcin that sounds like a great program. We have clean and green programs here but it is just more about keeping agricultural and forest lands from being developed. Significant tax savings by participating! I hope to learn more from your work in Ohio. We definitely have our share of invasive species as well.

I have been cleaning this little farm up cutting the trees out of the ditches and digging them out with a backhoe. But, I am not even advertising and I have people calling me to take care of their trees. The farm is like working two full jobs and the arborist work is a full time job. If I'm right, Your are doing about the same thing. Working about three jobs! Lol :-)

    • @WaynePolcin
      @WaynePolcin  Před 5 měsíci

      It’s always good to know there are pros and cons to every plant and animal species. Most people, including myself, enjoy seeing whitetail deer passing through our yards, yet if you ask the farmers and law enforcement, they will tell you that, in order to keep our roadways safe and crop fields plentiful, we keep the deer population down. I also admire the Ailanthus tree, but it is taking over the territories that were once populated by much needed hardwood and fruit bearing trees. So controlling the spread of this aggressive species is a necessary action to balance the habitat. Sorry for the long reply. I just wanted to make my point clear. Enjoy your trees of heaven and your mushroom harvesting! Thanks for taking the time to comment! Stay kind!

      I got deer feeders in my backyard and some salt licks (almost gone) gotta replace soon. I'm actually thinking of making them a salt lick lamp where the lick lights up the area with the feeder. I got 3 federal cats that came down the mountain and adopted themselves here (all fixed now) Taking care of the mice and the poor chipmunks. Also got a friendly groundhog I named Fatso I feed lettuce and carrots. Fatso lives under a hole under the backyard fence. I even got seagull friends at the beach! I just shake the bag and they start coming over, sometimes one stands or sits on my head!

      Tree of heaven releases quassanoids into the soil which means it releases herbicides into the soil and it kills everything around it. It's a shitty tree. I killed it with the drill a spray method for the NPS

    Hey Wayne, we have a tree of heaven growing through the crawl space of our kitchen addition into the kitchen 😮.. it appears to be a sucker, and yes our neighborhood is full of them, so finding THE tree and dealing with it isn’t an option. How would you suggest we treat the roots and suckers we have access to?

    • @WaynePolcin
      @WaynePolcin  Před 2 měsíci

      I would treat the sucker by applying Crossbow or any herbicide containing Triclopyr to it. Depending on the season of the year, you may have to apply it twice. Late fall or early spring is best, but I’ve had good results year round. Good luck!

About the tree....is a boxwood tree similar to the " Tree of heaven" ? In so far as it being an invasive species......or is it a crappy tree that just happens to be our inconvenience to deal with?? Just wondering if you know or not. 😊😊

    • @WaynePolcin
      @WaynePolcin  Před 2 lety +1

      Are you sure you're talking about a boxwood or a boxelder. The boxwood is more of a shrub than a tree. The boxelder is a nasty, fast growing, brittle tree. Around here, people call them river maples. Due to the those characteristics, it is considered t be an invasive species.
      There are so many things happening here at Heartwood I haven't had time to do much video work. I've been shooting footage but it's kinda like CZcams constipation at the moment. If I ever get a little down time, look out cuz CZcams diarrhea will follow. I know, that's a crappy analogy!

    • @WaynePolcin
      @WaynePolcin  Před 2 měsíci

      “Dumb” is pretty harsh. But I will say, mowing only works if you do it often. That’s not practical unless the plants are in your yard. Chemical treatment gives best results. Mechanical methods, like mowing, will trigger a survival response and you end up with a slew of suckers
