The "time capsule" Ford C3 engine is modernized and on the dyno! Back in July we pulled this 1990s NASCAR engine out of Lake Speed's former Winston Cup shop to find out how much power it lost after sitting untouched for 18 years. Along with Lake Jr and Total Seal we have created a whole series showing the modern upgrades we have done to this time capsule engine. How much power will it make? Lets find out before this engine goes back into his 93 Thunderbird for 75 year old Lake Speed to get back on the track for the first time in 18 years!

I definitely liked this style video better more jumping from point-to-point I can't buy some of your videos got a little boring there and we're hard to watch
Lake Speed is a bad ass!!
Like this format better... either way its all great.... thank you bossman!
Funny that I have little to zero interest but can watch your videos on what was all day long. You guys do a great job of bring back what I would call the heyday if NASCAR. I was a huge Bill Elliott/Alan Kulwicki /Ford fan. Here's one for ya, I have a WoodenOdden Kulwicki collectible? Does anyone know anything about these? (It's a Kulwicki Hooters Tbird carved from wood. Received it as a gift back in 1991. Story I got was NASCAR shut the guy down because it wasn't licensed? Another reason you guys resonate here, I've got a 96 40' Fleetwood American Dream Coach I'm currently traveling in . . . get tons of compliments from folks with newer coaches. It's not a Newell but it's screwed together better than most of today's coaches, looks and runs great. No slides but Spartan Xtra wide frame cures a lot of ills. Hats off to both of you!
Lake speed is a back MF... he was and still is the man... we love ya lake speed...
On behalf of Dad and myself, we can’t thank everyone enough for all the support. We are overwhelmed by all excitement and encouragement. We can’t wait to get Dad back on the track!
Love the passion you guys have, I’ve been an engine builder for 31 years and I can’t get enough of it still so I can relate, like a little kid in a candy store!😀
Thank you for allowing all of us such access. This engine rebuild has been really fun to watch.
i enjoyed this series. ow16 eh....i saw that pressure....makes you know what ya really need eh?
Yall have such an amazing story and you chose the best person to tell it!! 🤙🐼🤙
Thank you for sharing all this with us!! Your dad is a true bad ass and it's awesome to see his history and better yet ,his future!! Can't wait to see him behind the wheel again
Lake jr's knowledge and ability to explain it while being so excited is gold.
agreed!
Thank you!
Pure passion for what he does.
I hope you all like this intro it took me over 2 hours to make it 😂
Why so long 😆 🤣 😂
Hay Mitchell This is absolutely AWESOME ! ! MAN this is by far my favorite of your videos but im a Ford nut all your videos are fantastic your killing it man fantastic! Cant wait for the engine in your truck! You sir are a lucky man I do know your working hard so its not all luck ! But you hit jackpot with lake speed!
It’s damn good!!
You actually do great VO work. The intro was very professional and intriguing, made me get excited to see the video.
love it
You can tell Lake Jr is just proud as hell to be able to help you out and make his dad's day. Fine job sir
Jr is the driver and facilitator of all of this. He’s the one to thank.
@@Stapleton42 then I thank him
I’m absolutely proud as hell of my Dad. I can’t wait to see him rip around that track again.
@@themotoroilgeek Used to follow your dad when he ran Cup, can't wait to see him run with this new engine package. Happy for you guys
@SPEEDiagnostix me too brother, Lake was always a guy I pulled for in the 90s. I was a hard-core Earnhardt fan but I always liked the independent guys like your dad. He was a terrific driver and if he was in a car like the 3, 5, 9, or 28 back then I'm positive he'd won multiple times and competed for the cup.
Lake saying screw the small track i want to haul as* is priceless. He probably went home and dug a fire suit out of mothballs, washed it and shined his helmet. Checked the forecast for good weather . Ordered a new set of tires.
You was born 30 yrs too late. I can remember living near 5 nascar shops not 1 near where they all are now. Some were around Charlotte but not all. In 98 I can remember hearing a car practicing at Greenville p track in the middle of a week day near my work. But this one sounded different, so we drove the 1/2 mile to see Jeff Gordon making some test laps for Martinsville. Stuff like that happened all the time. I lived across the road In traveler's rest sc 1986.. from the quaker state Ricky rudd driver.. Buick team. When I was a teen I lived down the road from the Skoal bandit shop Asheville NC . Think Leo Jackson? owned it then. Both buildings in SC and Asheville NC still there. It's sad what nascar has come to. And sheet metal? Just go grab it out of the dumpster.. nobody cared 😂 different times you and Logan would have absolutely loved the 80s God bless you two..
Absolutely true
We can’t wait for this one!
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it…..keep it going, your onto something!
Just finished watching qualifying for the Clash, and now this. What a great day :) Can't wait to see Lake wheel that thing again!
Thanks Steve!!
Can't wait to see it run and put in a car
I love the historical content of it no matter if it's long or short am looking forward to see lake speed run one more time with a big smile on his face
You and Lake's son are knocking it out of the park in this video series. Can't wait to see the results!
Couldn't agree more. This some quality content.
@@jaredkinneyjr 👍👌
Can’t wait!
I forgot to mention in my first comment: I can hardly wait to see Lake Speed driving his race car flat out with this refurbished/updated/original engine!!!
Can't wait to see Lake run that engine 👍
I can’t wait for this one!
Lake Speed is a real good driver.
Heck ya. Going to be interesting to see the difference.
I like the fact that they talk to you like normal people and they don't look at your funny when you ask questions because honestly some of these people can be pretty arrogant like you should know it already why would you be there if you knew it already..the Speed guys Are good group of people I can tell it just by how they respond to your questions! Great Video
Thanks man. They know my competence level and understand I am often asking questions on behalf of the viewer. Most guys are not as jerky as you’d think
Lake Speed and his son are just awesome!! I raced Karts back in the 70's and Lake was our hero. This has been a great series.
You two just keep doing what you're doing.. there's no one better at showing people the real history of nascar.without what you do it lost forever.lake Speed was a bad ass privateer. He did more with less than 75% of the entire field and . Lake Jr. Is 1 of a kind . VERY VERY SMART MAN
Very interested in they cylinder wall treatment.
Great video guys! Keep on rolling with this content. I think you ve hit on something that alot of long time Nascar fans, and race fans in general, love to see. Nostalgia. With the help of guys like Larry Mc Clure, Lake Sr. and Jr., and all of the other car owners, drivers, and mechanics, you have brought both insight and entertainment to many. Learning from the past is the key to living in the present. Keep it up!
Thanks Jim! You’re spot on!
💯
Great comment
Best comment here!
Not only do you two have one of the most underrated CZcams channel, you embody the old school, down home way that Nascar used to be. You also gave the sexiest hat model!. 😁👍
Thanks Dean! With that being said… you should buy a hat 😂
YES! It is long past time for it to rip itnon the track again😁👍
The amount of masters of their trades showing and sharing on this project is the best part of all.
Thanks man we agree. Learning from the best is priceless
Yay!!! Been waiting for this for a while now 😃😁
So awesome to see this engine build!!! Lake Speed and his son are both bad ass!!
I appreciate you guys putting together the videos in this series with Lake’s car. Cool stuff!
Dennis Borem is the man!
Long time Lake Speed fan too! 🏁🏁🏁
My favorite smell is vp108 and synthetic 2 stroke oil. It has to be below freezing air temperatures though for it to smell sweet.
The vp108 through a 4 stroke is pretty good though.
As for engine oil, there is meeting api specs, and there is exceeding them. The penzoil platinum is one of many that truly exceed the specifications. Amsoil and mobile 1 are others.
In my non racing, but non easy use gas applications I use Walmart synthetic. It’s quality and cheap.
Keep up the good work.Looking Forward to watching,I know I will enjoy it before I ever watch it.
I love the dyno sounds. Waren Johnson's race shop used to be about a mile from my house and I absolutely loved when they were testing engines.
Really enjoyed this one. The API 20 rating mentioned earlier isn’t all encompassing though. I’m a staunch believer of Pennzoil and have been for 30 years. I do have a couple of things to add to the importance of using the correct oil that you or someone on the channel may not be aware of. The gig you made about a lawnmower blowing up goes along with what I’m talking about. For most engines built since around the mid to late 80’s until present these newer oils are fine,as the newer recipes used in oil today have a lower content of zinc in the mixture. This is fine for roller camshafts and the engines with narrower ring packages. Older engines that employ flat tappet camshafts and the wider ring packs rely more heavily on oils with higher zinc concentrations. The zinc for lack of a better way to explain it creates a coating to all of the valleys and peaks similar to what you learned in the ring honing episode for the cylinders. That microscopic layer is imperative to the longevity of flat tappet camshafts and lifters because of the lubricity properties of zinc especially on startup and break in. I’ve been dragged into more than one engine repair on a non roller cam setup due to my buddies swapping in a cam and trying to use synthetic oil while also having higher spring pressures along with improper break in procedure. My point is this, the new oils are excellent and do an excellent job for the engines utilizing newer technology. The new oils however aren’t all encompassing. For people who aren’t sure what to use they need to do some research on their setup and speak to individuals who are actually knowledgeable about such things. Talk to the guys at a local machine shop or two instead of the kid at the auto supply who can’t make change but can look things up on the store computer. My apologies for being so long winded, I grew up around a family owned automotive garage that has been passed down from my great grandfather that was big enough that we had our own machine shop and learned to grind valves, seats and knurl guides before the age of 10. Love the channel and what you’re doing.
Stapleton, if this is a bit much for the channel or CZcams I’ll understand completely if you need to delete it, I almost didn’t type any of it but felt obligated to at least make an attempt at a helpful tidbit. Anyway keep up the great work and don’t lash anymore valvetrains with paper. 👍
I understand and agree with all of that. This topic is worthy of its own lecture series so I kept it short and simple for the integration. If you have a modern car and use API SP approved oil in it…it’s not going to blow up no matter the brand 😂
This was a great series of videos man! We need to get Lake Speed in the SRX series now!!!
Thanks again for great content. Very interesting.
Our pleasure!
I was a fan of Lake in the 60's when he was Champion kart racer. Wonderful to follow him through Stock Car career. Seeing and hearing him and his family now is a hoot. Thank you so much.
We had an engine builder one time for our late model and he thought we needed valve lash caps because of some spec he had learned. I guess the book said to use them. Well, some of those caps came off and we dropped a valve first race of the season. Oh well, guess the engine builder learned something from that experience.
This was by far one of my most favorite documented rebuild/resto series. So much great information and a lot of great people. It's insane how a few little tricks applied to some old school parts can transform an engine in a big way. I hope you do another series like this and you absolutely have to document Lake Speed at VIR testing out this rocket engine. Even put a simple timing app on a phone in the car to record the MPH he gets up to.
Thanks man!! We absolutely will have data on the car
@@Stapleton42 I can't wait!
Great to see all this development. Keep these comin'.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! The content of all your NASCAR engine videos is UNBELIEVABLE, content of how nascar motors really work. And how Speeds head does not EXPLODE!!! With that stuff in there is beyond me. NOW you have to get Lake and Rusty To VIR and spend a day there to see who can put down the BEST TIME!!! THANKS for the series!!!!
Thank you Andrew!
The format made it a bit easier to digest. But that's just me. Yall are killing it.
Thanks man
I worked in a machine shop and I would love it when customers would bring in old NASCAR engines in for machining. We would turn them into dirt track late model engines. They would make around 700-800 HP after we were done!
I wish we could get ahold of some of them lol
@@Stapleton42 Ya! I got to see a lot of neat tricks!
Lake is a pure legend and still humble. That’s what you call greatnesses and an og gentleman 🤷♂️. Also Lake jr. Realizes this is a big part of him. He loves and respects his father and is clearly proud to be part of this and proud of who his father is. It’s touching to see this stuff being so intertwined in a great family.
Thanks man. It’s so much fun
Worth the wait to see this video. 300+ HP gain from where it was to now is amazing. Can't wait to see it in the car and making laps somewhere, it's going to be an animal.
Thankyou so much for putting a smile on lake and his boys face. He was my favorite driver next to Ernie Irvin back In his heyday! Thanks Stape
VP C16 smells the best to me! Man this content is awesome. I love all the people that’s involved with this, seeing them excited about it, seeing the insides of it! The best part of it though is seeing the spark in Lake Sr! Thanks for the videos!
Couldn't agree more!
Well broski I finally got a chance to finish it, and ya absolutely Killed it. Doing an amazing job, keep on keepin on brother bear 🤙🐼🤙
This is the best "Nascar" series done in many years. Fantastic video as well as the rest of them. You two are setting a new standard. The editing keeps getting better and your questions and commentary are excellent as well as knowing when to just listen. Really great job on this and subject matter is riveting. Cannot wait to see Lake run this car! Lake Jr. should have his own show. Love listening and learning all this. :)
Thanks man!!
@@Stapleton42 the key to knowledge is knowing the right questions and when to ask them, your consistency on getting that part right is unreal. GG
Thanks Mitch, Miss Logan and everyone else involved with filming and editing of this video
Thanks Doug!
The smirk on the seasoned Lake Speed face when the final numbers were stated by Jr has to be worth the price of production! Love this production format btw.
That's awesome
I sure hope you guys are going all the way with this series. To the reinstallation of the motor to Lake Speed out on the racetrack that would be awesome to see. You guys rock keep it up !!!! Love seeing the history of Nascar.
Don’t worry man. That WILL happen. It’s been the plan from day one!
This was one of the coolest and most insightful video series I've ever seen on the details of the cup engines from the 90s. As a huge Ford fan, this was awesome to see. Have the Speeds involved throughout the process made it even better. Thanks for all of the work that went into this.
My dad was big into Nascar and I loved it too... but I don't follow the modern Nascar at all... these legends made racing and I will always love your videos... I don't care what format you use I will still watch them... what ever is more fun for you works for me.. you gotta enjoy the videos or they aren't as good for us... your excitement is what makes the video perfect....
Watching the guys building up the heads was great. The muscle memory on display was real ! I have really enjoyed this series and your channel in general. Love from the UK
Glad you enjoyed it Liam!!
Cant wait guys. I have what I believe is a Dorton built 18deg Chev NASCAR engine that has sat new for over 20 years as well. Only done dyno time and was then pulled apart. Once you guys are finished I want to reach out and see if I can get some advice on doing the same to my engine. It will go back into a 95 Hutch built Monte Carlo NASCAR which Lake Speed Snr saw race when he was in Australia commentating back in 99.
Been waiting for this one! It was worth the wait! Now I can't wait for Lake to get out on VIR! This project is such a treat! Thanks for doing this!
Thanks man!!
Would love to go to VIR and hang out with y'all. To see the look on Lake Speed's face there would be priceless.
Very kewl. Loved to video about the evolution of the Ford Nascar engines. Enjoy it folks. Hybrids and electrics are coming. No way around it.
Vintage racing will always exist
@@Stapleton42 Yep. As long as gasoline or other fuels exist old cars will still be run. Especially with how Toyota figured out how to run engines in pure hydrogen, so eventually we may see v8s running hydrogen and still making v8 music.
Great job on these engine videos of lake speed engine. Would love to see lake speed driving his car around the track again with this engine. Love all these videos you guys do. Even the old race shops. Your friend David Hiatte from Missouri
thanks David! You will see him on track no doubt!
That was AWESOME! Can't wait to see Lake get on the track and mash on it. Lake Jr is a cool customer and so damn smart. You know Lake Sr is a proud Papa. You guys are killing it with these videos. You and Logan keep doing what you're doing!
You are producing your best content of all time. When I get back to work here after I get my knee replaced I'll be buying a bunch of your stuff. You guys are doing a really good job I love the old NASCAR stuff being a 55 year old man that loves NASCAR stuff it's really great to see you guys grow the shop looks great remember I offered you a bunch of shop tools a long time ago. You guys are doing great I'm proud of you both and you look very happy together and that's a beautiful thing. Keep up the good work I love all the videos this one was exceptionally good because you did pop around a little bit and bring an old clip so I thought that was super educational and gave the video a lot of content and updates really build up to the horsepower numbers at the end. Nice job
Thank you so much Jeff. I do remember that. Best of luck on your recovery!
Great job guys
Been a Lake Speed fan for many years . Lake always got the most out of the least. Would have been interesting to see what he could have accomplished with a premium ride.
Great video guys! I'm always on the edge of my seat, especially for these Lake Speed vids.
My name is Lake too and I've always been into racing. Growing up in Indy it sorta came with the territory. For years I've heard "There's a NASCAR racer named Lake, ya know." Your videos have been such an incredible history lesson of his career. Thank you so much!
That’s awesome lol I’ve never encountered another Lake besides them 😂
I can't imagine finding a more fitting pair to represent your vision of Golden Age to Modern Technology than Lake Sr & Jr.
The Speeds are truly examples of the high caliber of people in Motorsports and life in general.
I hope you are able to show us the on-track results of everyone's hard work.
This has been a great series and I have enjoyed every step of the way. Thanks
Hey tell Lake jr. that I really enjoyed his recent article in Hotrod magazine. I know writing tech articles isn’t his day job, but he’s really good at it. I’m a big fan of Stapleton42. Thanks for the 90s content- that’s when I started following NASCAR. Keep it up!!!
More dinner time Nascar treats, nice! :)
Back making mid 700's hp!! Now lets see Lake open this baby up at Darlington!
Working on it!!
Now that would be awesome!
IMHO don't worry about what the viewers want. Keep doing what you want. The views and subs will come because of your creativity and content. You will never give everybody what they want.
I rarely like videos longer than 15 or 20 minutes. However, yours are the exception, so again, you're doing something right.
Thanks man that means a lot!
I enjoy the jump cuts, but I also really enjoy the full scoop of old knowledge and seeing the history
Great job on the intro. The whole series with lake and his son has been fantastic! Can't wait to see the car going down the track.
Thank you Ronald!
Awesome can't believe it made that much more hp that shows the improvements in technology 👍
I am not new and love your content and would watch whole videos, but the jump cuts/editing honestly made it so much better for me. I get that some videos are meant for the more in depth convo's and tidbits, but this one was done great still giving us some of that, but going through a lot of elapsed time and still delivering
Thanks Jason I agree there’s a time and place for both formats
So good , I don’t mind the new format at all , I like the nitty gritty when a old feller is telling his stories . But something like this wrap up video the small jump through scenes were ideal
I’ve been watching you since you started and I think you’ve done a great job separating your channel from just a standard ls built channel into an awesome nascar history/tech channel!! Both of you are great!!
Thanks Brian. That area is definitely saturated
This has been such a fun process, can wait to see Lake Speed Sr back on track! 💪🏻😃
We are gonna have to buy some more GoPros to load his car up when he hits the track 😂
And a microphone in lakes helmet🤣
Here from the live chat. awesome video so far cant wait to see it pull
Thanks for coming!
@@Stapleton42 no problem i always get excited for one of your videos specifically anything to do with nascar history. I love hearing the stories and getting a deeper connection
Yes you nailed it. Love the info input. More input as a retired ASE Technician and Muscle car dirt track racer use to be from the 70s through the twenty twenties I hope thanks alot folks.
Thanks Theodore!! You were born in the best era
I have been following the Lake Speed engine build. You have assembled the most complete series I have ever seen. Lake Speed Sr and Jr are awesome. I could listen to Jr break down a race engine in every detail for hours. He is the best I have seen. That being said I am not a big NASCAR guy more a NHRA fan. Still I soak up the knowledge. Congratulations on a great series.
Thank you Gary. Engines are engines regardless of the racing type thats for sure!
Just another First Place finish with this video. My favorite CZcams channel by far.
Thanks william!!
@@Stapleton42 I first started attending races in 1966 at the Middle Georgia Raceway. I saw Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, David Pearson and Bobby Isaac. They were driving Grand National Sportsman and from then on Bobby Allison fan for life.
Good to see this video! Lake is Mr Laidback, GoFast No Fear! It's great to watch the hp climb. When you guys were talking about how much the hp increased from 2002, you could see the wheels turning in Lake's head! 😀
Either way you make it we will still watch but I enjoyed this video. This has been a really great series and can’t wait to see what Lakes reaction is when he gets to take it for some laps. Awesome work as usual thanks Logan & Mitchell 👌👏🏁🇦🇺
Thanks Graeme 💪🏻
Even knowing nothing about building an engine, this is my new favorite series so far. Loved the Richard Petty series, but hearing that engine screaming again is awesome. Can't wait to see Lake running it. I like the new format. Hits all the high points, makes the video smoother, and lets you put out separate videos with even more specific content (like the carb info you said would be it's own thing). Thanks for what yall do.
Glad you enjoy it!
Just seeing the look on Lake Speeds Eyes was awesome.
I hope you get to see him run a lap at VIR.
We will!
Love your content. I’ve been around for years, can’t wait for the Escalade to come back out.
The history is cool, the education is cool. I enjoy the new format of moving the videos along a little faster. 30 minute videos is kind of my sweet spot. Too much longer and I can’t sit still that long.
Awesome video. I can't get enough of Lake and Lake Jr. It is funny that Lake Jr. relates the age of the connecting rods to the age of his children. The two important things in life. Love it. And Lake wants to run on a road course that has some flow and can open it up more. If they had fantasy racing for vintage racing, I'd be on team Speed every time.
Just watched the segment on Lake Sr talking about leading Talledega. I believe this race was in 1980 and also this is the motor that came from a shop at the end of a dirt road. I helped build this engine as I was working for Bobby Brown then. Also sometimes when your father would pick these engines up he would stay over at my house so he wouldn’t have to drive back to Jackson so late at night. Love these stories as y’all have brought them back to life.
wow man that is awesome
This was a cool video father and son love for the sport is compelling thanks for sharing 👍
I’m subbed to see senior’s drive and feedback. V looking forward to it. Thanks everyone.
Thanks Martin welcome to the channel!
So many amazing aspects to this video!! Just smiles from the start
Doing great Mitch & Logan. Enjoyed the video and the new format. Cheers from the UK

Great Video. As I’ve mentioned previously, I have complete faith in Pennzoil. Worked at Corporate from 86-93. Great products then and only improvement since then, particularly in the synthetic area.
I worked directly with the race teams of that era and our chemical engineers. Early stages of synthetic for Pennzoil.
Regarding the ‘sludge’ reputation from the 40’s into maybe the early 60’s that was possible because the base oil, from Oil City PA, contained some paraffin. Even way back then it only built-up because the engine owners didn’t change oil, they only added oil. Ironically I also worked at a Shell gas station in 65-66. Hopefully that myth will eventually completely disappear. Once Pennzoil switched to primarily West Texas ‘Sweet’ crude for their base oil, the build-up possibly was eliminated. I believe they might have tried to use both crudes stocks for a short period but quickly used west Texas exclusively until of course using synthetic bases.
I was product sponsored by Pennzoil for my Drag race cars from 72 until I went to work for them in January of 86.
Regarding your video format. Both styles are good. As an old gear head I’d prefer slightly more depth on the technical side but I enjoy both.
Continued success.
Thanks man this is some very interesting information. Did you work with Michael Thomas back in the day?
