  • Is vegan leather a good alternative and other common eco "facts" debunked. For example, do you think recycling works, are cling wrap or coffee cups recyclable? These commonly believed eco facts are just myths that need to be busted.

This is definitely a bit of a rant but it had to be done. What other eco “facts” get to you?

I just don't "do" leather anymore. I have switched to fabrics, cork etc. problem solved. I have THE most comfy bamboo sandals with cork heel. And they are pretty ... I bought them on a beach in costa rica ... a lady was making them there and then. Measured my feet and I came back an hour later. And they don't have that "hippy" vibe. So it can be done. I bought 3 pairs ... :)

There is VEGAN leather on the market that doesn’t contain PVC or PU. Pineapple, Cactus and Mushrooms are now being turned into VEGAN leather. Me personally as a VEGAN will only wear my old leather shoes until they wear out and fix them to continue using them.. All of the new shoes I have bought recently have been CORK or Fabric.

Carasforever that is so great! i keep hearing about apple and pineapple options but haven’t been able to find them- do you know of any brands?

@@CoolSustainable The NAE BRAND seems to be selling PINATEX which is pineapple leather. It's expensive like any leather alternative but I guess until demand goes up for these type of 'leathers' the prices will stay out of reach for the masses. www.nae-vegan.com/en/pinatex-vegan-pineapple_454.html

So much good info!! I tried a couple bamboo toothbrushes and wasn't really happy with how my teeth felt, so I went back to the preserve recycled toothbrushes.. do you have an opinion on those? It seems like there's no perfect solution yet but I want to do the best I can!

The great debate of two options: animal vs synthetic leather... it's a tough debate for sure.
There is a third option with 2 sub options -- recycled synthetic leather. 1) old windshields upcycled to make synthetic leather, 2) recycled pre or post-consumer polyester mixed with recycled polyurethane to make synthetic leather. What do you and your viewers think about these?
Also, there is a fourth option: recycled animal leather. It is composed of old scrap animal leather and post-consumer recycled polyester to make new material.
Would you and your viewers agree that using recycled materials, whereby the recycled material composition is maximized, does more environmental cleanup overall?

    • @CoolSustainable
      @CoolSustainable  Před 4 lety +1

Absolutely I agree! reusing materials we already have is what will get rid of the mess we created. Do you know of companies that make things out of any of the options you mentioned?

Vegan leather definitely not better for the environment, but once I’ve made the connection between leather and animal cruelty I feel bad and really sad about buying it. So the solution for me is to: 1. Buy less; 2. Buy high quality “vegan leather” shoes because they do last and they are so well made you can’t tell the difference (BC footwear, Blowfish Malibu, Will’s vegan shoes).

Also raising animals for food or leather, feathers, fur is terrible for the environment: in a climate where we are getting less rain and snow every year is not good using huuuuge amounts of water to raise animals and the crops to feed them.
Antibiotics use is trough the roof, causing antibiotic resistant bacteria, that in turn turn into millions of people killed by the “common flu” every year.
Polluting of soil and water streams is normal practice, by releasing waste (check out “animal waste lagoons”).
Methane released in the atmosphere by animals is more polluting then CO2.
The chemicals used to transform the animal skin into “leather” are numerous and again get released into rivers and then end up in the oceans, and the. Into aquatic animals and then into humans table.

I wish people would stop saying "vegan leather" or "pleather" and just say "plastic". Same with Polyester. It doesn't sound as fancy to say plastic purse/dress.
Another alternative for a toothbrush is a wooden toothbrush with horse hair bristles. My husband is using one of those. My guess is that most bamboo toothbrushes aren't even getting composted. They are probably going in the garbage.
