  • Witcher The Ciri 'Problem'. I've seen a lot of comments discussing Ciri as a potential protagonist for the next witcher game, but there are a lot of issues with this idea. The witcher 3 has multiple endings for her character, she's overpowered and a variety of other considerations. In this video I discuss the mall along with the possibility for a standalone ciri witcher game.

I might be in the minority, but I'd love to play as a random Witcher during the height of the Witcher schools era. You could pick your school and maybe have different storylines depending on the school, I guess similar to cyberpunk. Maybe interact with other Witcher's like Erland of Larvik, a younger Vessimer (not like the Netflix animated show though), and Gezras of Leda. I's not a perfect idea but It could be interesting.

Agreed, a small Ciri game might be a fun thing they could do, but for a full sized Witcher game, I'd really like some sort of prequel from when Witchers were more common in the world. I don't think Ciri's powers make her a feasible protagonist, and there's so much lore to work with already just from going back in time.

My thoughts also. A new witcher would have unlimited posabilities.
Ciri comes with a lot of baggage. First you _MUST_ pick one of the Wild Hunt endings*--probably the one with Ciri as witcher--to continue on from there. Ciri doesn't get to use her Time-n-Space™ abilities, because it would call the Wild Hunt back to her again--yes, Eredin is dead, but the Hunt was a military unit of the Aen Elle and would have found a new leader, who might be interested in taking revenge for what happened to Eredin, ergo, Ciri used T&S and is found by the Hunt, so no T&S.
From here, Ciri could go on the path and do witcher things and have witcher quests and adventures, but I believe it would feel strange, because of her past. Everything would always be missing; Geralt, Yen, Triss, all huge parts of her life, and you would simply be cutting them out, like a nasty wart.
A new, fresh witcher would have so much more potential. Simply the fact that he is new and fresh to the path, the first time out on his own, and he still has a world of things to learn. The witchers have been mostly locked up in their schools, doing their studies and training, and now they are in the real world. Not only are they encountering all the monsters they have learned about, probably many for the very first time--I think they probably practiced on local monsters, like all the drowners and what-not around Kaer Morhen, but there aren't any golems around there--, so there is a lot to learn. But also, from life itself. Visiting towns and cities, getting in trouble with girls and citizens, trying to learn to navigate all the pitfalls and experiences almost everyone does when they are young and on their own for the first time.
And then there could be adventures that build a main quest. There are almost limitless possibilities. Think of something like Geralt's adventures in Season of Storms while in Kerack--I'm not saying to copy that, but pointing out how much room for telling a great story with a main quest that transforms to something completely different over time and all the possible side-quests.
So much to do, so little time.

    I agree. Also couple of other things;
Firstly Witcher 3 gave her crown achievement be stopping the Whtie Frost.
I'd imagine it would be a very hard feat for them to come up with something for a Ciri sequel which can top that. More likely than not, any upcoming danger would feel underwhelming.
Also, having it as sequel will basically chain the writers of the game to some fans demands for cameos & appearances of Geralt & his gang. i.e. "Where are Geralt & Yennefer" then "Where are Triss and Dendelion" so on and so on.
Basing it on prequel era I think will give the writers much more creative freedom with no pressure to include the Geralt Trilogy characters.

They could do something like the cyberpunk 2077 backstory where you can pick your own intro to the game essentially and each intro could tie into one of the witcher 3’s endings and then also have some story implications.
Also they could just buff the enemies so that she isn’t too OP, i mean thats what they did with the witcher as well. (No way Geralts getting killed by some guards)!

I want to disagree but you make good points. When I say I want a Ciri game, with Geralt also playable, I mean decades after the W3.
Regardless, the ending that is most at odds with a sequel is the empress ending. The worst ending can be interpreted as her surviving because of the symbolism of the swallow in the chrones' painting flying after she defeats the white frost.
This might be sacrilege but the empress ending is in fact ham fisted. It is artificially sad because Geralt, Ciri, Yeneffer, etc. don't have to stay apart. And there's no mention of Ciri stopping the Nilfgaardian invasion of Cintra and the northern kingdoms.
One believable way of Ciri renouncing the throne would be her demand of a Nilfgaard retreat to the south of the Yaruga. Emyr would completely reject this demand and she would renounce the throne. So the first 10% of the game could be 3 different angles from which she would start engaging in the actual sequel story.

It may have continued the story but the episodic structure as well as a focus on the major themes of the first few books and a parallel to Ciri in Alvin, it’s clear Witcher 1 was trying to be a mix of adaption and sequel.
What I’d love is what CDPR were originally working on before focusing on Geralt with Witcher 1, a factions based make your own Witcher RPG set around the books events as a parallel.

I remember my younger version don´t like the idea of Witcher games back in the 2000s (yes, I´m one of the lucky Europeans who read all books even before games were even planned). Mostly because the story ended and there was no option for going further, the majority of protagonists (and a lot of interesting supporting characters) were dead, close to dead. exiled, etc. - their storylines were closed. But the other main reason - monsters were dead or endangered species - then in games, there is a wivern next to every village. I was very skeptical. It bothered me, it undermined the melancholy, the "something ends, something begins" theme.
Also, games retconned a lot. A LOT: Butchering Emhyr's character´s growth (next invasion? C´mon!), writing out false Ciri (I like her!), Eredin as the main villain makes me laugh (he is good enough maybe for a secondary villain on the level of Bill from the RDR), Dijkstra returning to Redania didn´t make much sense (I´m glad he is back, he is my favorite character, but still), Regis alive (made his sacrifice a little meaningless, didn´t it?), Triss romance (just why?), Shani romance (I like her, love her, but her being in love with Geralt? Romance - OK, but actually loving him? He is a little too old for her and also she is a normal human, aging in normal terms, with a normal amount of experiences - she will be bored by "boomer" Geralt in two weeks)). I could go for weeks, but you get the point.
I still think they should go for prequels, start over with a new noname witcher, or with Ciri somewhere in another world... But you see, CD Project Red does it their way, does it well and a lot of people enjoy it (I actually also enjoy it). They retconned the ending once (even twice). They could do it (successfully) again.

Overpowered isn't a very valid argument, insert greater stakes and greater monsters. The Wild Hunt is a threat after all and there are out of context possibilities due to her nature so you aren't limited purely by the Witcher's own world setting for threats but even within it there are plenty sorts of higher profile monsters that are major threats. Could Ciri survive against a true Vampire for example? You don't have to have every fight be challenging, that's what bosses are for.
Primarily focus on Narrative, Exploration, and Puzzles while common enemies are there for power fantasy and Bosses are there for mechanical challenge.
A Ciri game letting you choose one of the "Three Beginnings" you could call it (or import save) would be a massive boon especially with gameplay rammifications.
Starting as Empress could see them doing a Fable situation but better, leaning more into empire management reflected in the empire itself and have diplomatic gameplay where dialogue matters.
Witcher ending could see you favor monster slaying.
And Wanderer ending could be a Wildcard start that places you in the world (or Worlds...).
If Starfield works out well you could see similar tech and ideas get used as a basis for a Ciri game but instead of space, you're worldhopping. Narrative events still properly situated in hand crafted locations, imagine the true Map being nodes in isolation removed from the worldmap itself, each having Direction and Rough Distance paramiters for where other handcrafted elements get placed, then the world generates and places these handcrafted nodes appropriately and in predictable ways you can seamlessly integrate dialogue with, knowing for sure that even though the map is randomized "X Location is to the north" and either "nearby" "A ways away" or "Far".
I'd love a Magic-Fantasy version of [the Ideal we're sold] Starfield.

i don't think ciri died in the worst ending as well, but as you said, she's still in such a vastly different places it wouldn't work without some heavy retconning that basically discards all of our decisions in witcher 3, and we know everyone and their dog would absolutely hate that approach. my only thought to make it work would be - no matter the ending Ciri ends up teleporting to some other world and then losing her powers and getting stuck there until she regains them. that would work with either ending, and it wouldn't matter if she was a witcher, an empress or a time traveller in that one - but it would really depend on the world they created, and they'd have to do it from scratch, unlike in the previous games. unless she teleported to the witcher world but somewhere/sometime different i guess. but ngl, i like your idea with a spin-off better. it would be funny if we were playing ciri trying to find geralt and then have like little bits of gameplay as geralt, reverse to what we have in witcher 3, but i have no idea how to possibly incorporate it so it made sense. maybe they could have tied it to the whole geralt as the wild hunt rider that i'm not ever sure if is still canon in games

    @Marten_s99 Před 11 měsíci

I'm a fan of the idea that a continuation of Ciri's story from The Witcher 3 could work. I don't think all endings for Ciri's story are equally canon. The Empress ending as well as the supposedly tragic ending are more likely to be the consequences of bad decisions that Geralt from the game may have made (strictly speaking, the player represented by Geralt). The Geralt from the books, on the other hand, would never commit such bad decisions. If he did so, fate and something more would eventually reverse the consequences of those bad decisions.
I think Ciri deserves a decent standalone story in the games. Her story is powerful and overall tragic in the novel saga. She’s gone through solid character development from innocent child to mature young woman. She's better and more authentic than most of „the strong female characters“ Hollywood produces today. She's badass and awesome.
SPOILER ALERT: She's suffered a lot: survived in the desert, been nearly raped several times, stripped naked in front of a group of horny guys at an inn, been beaten, tortured, fought in an arena etc. And she experienced all of this as a teenage girl.
I think that she's a "Witcher" because she feels like one, she has the skills to be one, and Geralt encourages her to be one. Ciri could be the protagonist due to her exceptional nature. She, in my opinion, breaks the established stereotypes and rules of the Witcher world with her uniqueness, experience and abilities. In her case, the lore can be partially improved. The possible question of whether Ciri is/isn't/could be a Witcher, since she didn't pass the Trial of the Grasses, is therefore irrelevant.
The argument that Ciri is overpowered is not valid. It may be a popular opinion, but I find it stupid. It is still questionable whether she is capable of defeating certain types of bosses (e.g. very powerful mages) and monsters (e.g. higher vampires). She hasn't learned to use her abilities properly. She didn't even beat Caranthir at the end of the game. He almost beat her and she only managed to escape him.
Ciri may even lose her abilities temporarily (much like she gave up her magical abilities in the books when she was in the Korath Desert). I can imagine that the new story would have some very powerful mage and swordsman at the same time as the main villain, who defeats and kidnaps Ciri in the prologue. He would perform a brutal scientific experiment on her to try to gain her power. This would result in her not being able to teleport between worlds and not being able to escape his grasp (at least to begin with). Of course, it would be great if Ciri went through the suffering.
Personally, for a new game, I'd prefer the compromise of a new saga that continues after The Witcher 3, with an alternative choice of playable character (Ciri/traditional male Witcher as a new character), with a specific story line and abilities for each of the optional characters. At the same time, they could share a main story line. The different outcomes of the multiple endings of The Witcher 3 could also be creatively implemented in the new game.
As for the "empress ending", Ciri may take reign in the prologue, but she will still have doubts about her choice, she will make decisions as Empress that will affect the part of the world where the new story will take place (e.g. The City of the Golden Towers, some Nilfgaardian provinces). At the end of the prologue (which could take up 10 hours of gameplay time), the aforementioned villain will appear, and he and his army will sack the Empire's capital city, defeating and kidnapping Ciri in battle.
By the way, the idea that she should remain in the position of Empress doesn't seem like a logical ending to her story to me, since she values freedom and independence most of all. Being the ruler of an absolutist monarchy is a rather unnatural position for her. Unless she would initiate some reforms in order to establish a constitutional monarchy. But still, it's strange.
The supposedly tragic ending could be implemented by having Ciri prevent the cataclysm, but getting lost in the process and almost completely losing her abilities. There would even be a new character, the witcher, searching for her and Geralt (whose fate remained unknown).
After all, everything is just a matter of imagination and the authors' abilities.

I am somewhat certain that any future witcher game that takes place after the witcher 3 will consider the ending, with all the characters in the anniversary video alive, to be the cannon one. I also think they will try to make the references to witcher 3 vague and are enough 90% of the time so that the player does not have a disconnect because something is different from how they remember it.
Also my 2 cents as a short story author. The choice of protagonists and viewpoint characters matters a lot. Choosing Ciri as a protagonist to me seems as ridiculous as reading Lord of the rings from Gandalf's point of view. She is a great character, but the reader of any medium is not necessarily served by seeing the story from everyone's viewpoint. The viewpoint through which the artists choose to display the story is well thought out.
In the case of the witcher, seeing the story through Geralt makes us worry for Ciri, it makes us care about her, and want to protect her. At the same time we need to learn to respect her if we want her to thrive.
Furthermore we get to be a relatively small man, in a very big, and mean world. A professional who makes it better bit by bit, through great effort.
Ciri on the other hand is like Gandalf. The way the player will see the world will change drastically if you can teleport everywhere, or the fact that you are ''A child of destiny'' keeps coming up.
Also a potential pun I would like to see for the next witcher game is just removing the THE from the title. So the game is just called, witcher + subtitle, or a witcher+ subtitle. Because clearly Geralt is THE witcher, as opposed to a witcher, and we are no longer gonna be playing Geralt.

Some of the best games ever to come out with a character that was powerful enough to kill all gods of Olympus in previous entitlements. An 'OP' character doesn't translate to a bad game if the story and enemies match. The fact W3 has different 'endings' is not an issue either. Go play Tekken games. They have like 209384948 endings. But 'one' is picked as canon for the next game and they move on. It's not a big deal. I think it makes more sense that Siri's "real" ending is the Witcher one and would make more sense for uh.. a.. Ciri was the overpowered protagonist stereotype ... but she was _not_ the protagonist, Geralt is, who gets his ass handed to him by a certain someone. Which is the point, being made to be powerful doesn't mean it is enough, being the protagonist doesn't mean you are gonna win. That is the entire point of the books - destiny, what everyone tells you you should be, is _not enough_ - you need _something more_ .

The assumption that Ciri will actually become Empress seems to me a big oversimplification (the ending - Ciri as Empress). If you've played the Blood Wine DLC and have the ending with Ciri then you can easily see that Ciri doesn't become Empress, she's just being prepared all the time to take over the throne, which makes it doubtful that she will ever become one in Emhyr's lifetime.
Knowing Emhyr's past motivations and actions (including his lust for power over the entire world), it is more likely that Ciri is just a tool in his hands so that he can maintain power (Yes, I will transfer power, just let my daughter prepare "properly" for it).
In such a scenario, without much complication, Ciri can leave the court and choose the life of a witcher.

As for the too op problem maybe they could introduce new enemies that negate her powers because in my opinion I would like a sequel to see where she goes next but the prequel game you propose also sounds a lot of fun and I am open to pretty much anything from cdpr as long as it has good quality

To be honest I wouldn't like a sequeal involving any of the characters as I believe the close the trilogy in a magnificent way with blood and wine and every character has its ending. If something if perfect don't touch just for the fan service and trying to make money. I would live to see a witcher game in the future far enough so everyone we knoe is death and see the political landscape develop base on our decisions in the witcher 3, like small references and fan service here and there. Or even meet a 9ld ciri or ancient Geralt. Other option would be a vesimir game similar to the nightmare of the wolf (the only half decent adaptation from Netflix) it would be amazing to see the kaer moren invasion. As fans we need to learn when to let go our favorite characters before they end with shitty products like star wars

Eh.. I don’t see a problem. It’s all up to the writers to balance everything in the story and make it interesting. So many games and stories out there. They’ve all pulled off strong characters based on the story presented.

Ciri is a walking McGuffin that Geralt needs to find. I think she is way too bland to be a protagonist.

    1. Ciri's too powerful to be the MC. There would be no sense of danger or development.
    2. I'm actually quite tired of the Wolf School. There are so many other Witcher schools to explore and most of them are way more interesting than the Wolf School. It would be a lot more interesting to have a Witcher Cat, Viper or even manticore schools...
I'd actually like the next MC to be Aiden... His death was mysterious, so there are plenty of ways to keep him alive, he has some connections with Witcher 3 and he's an young Witcher with a lot to discover, explore and grow as a character.

One great point you make, about Ciri being overpowered. This is the only reason I wouldn't like to play as her. If we geta game that takes place AFTER Witcher 3 I would like to see Ciri there, but not as a main character, but rather a superhero who swoops in and saves the protagonist when all hope is lost, just to give words of encouragement and disappear again.

It'd be better if we play as a random Witcher with our own backstory, gender, Nationality, tho race you could only pick a Human or Elf but get to choose if you were born in the Northern Kingdoms or the South, or Skellige or Nilfgaard or even the far kingdoms like Zerrikania or Ofier.
But we get to meet the Main Characters as the Main quest goes on (maybe even Romance Ciri cuz she's Bisexual but that'd be..... Weird since we basically play as her Father and it'd be weird)

... and a Ciri sequel game would ultimately fail. Oh you'd have some people that like it for nostalgia sake, but like most movies with endless sequels, they are never as good and let's face it, The Witcher 3 IS the high point. Any continuation sequel will be average at best.
      New story is needed.
