- Witcher 4 - What Could The Story Be? What could happen in the Witcher 4? In today's video i discuss what we can predict about the witcher 4's story based on all known information about the witcher 4, school of the lynx and witcher polaris. I will go over what I want fro the witcher 4 and more.

Id like a game staring Vesimir during the time when monsters where a lot more rampant and dangerous and witchers where a lot more common.
Single player games where you create your own characters can be nice, but personally I usually can't get into the character. Plus... even the story is often vague and non-specific, since the creators have no idea what kind of character you're going to create. All three previous Witchers had a strong character and a story written for that character. With a vague character, you have a vague story. So, again, I'd prefer to go the route of a very strong but pre-determined story and character - whether it be Ciri or some new Witcher.
Nyah look at Cyberpunk or Baldurs Gate 3 though I agree a set protagonist is going to be better especially for a witcher game.
The strongest point of the witcher trilogy has been the story and characters. In my opinion it should be an already defined character with established story related to the Lynx school in the Northern Kindgoms. If they mess around with character creation and choosing the appearance or school it will lose a lot of potential. CDPR has shown they know how to create awesome characters from scratch like Letho as an example.
This! I think the lack of character creation gives much more potential to focus on a proper story.
I think a good time for the setting could be Falka's rebellion. You know very little about it from the books, apart from the fact, that it is remembered as one of the bloodiest times in redanian history and a few central characters. It's only really talked about briefly in the books, but it I always felt, that you could tell a fantastic and tragic story during that time. Also because it happend around 100 years before Ciri's birth, you could use younger versions of already known characters like Vesemir, Philippa Eilhart and a few other mages.

Kovir and Zerikania would be two phenomenal places for CDPR to pick up on. Too bad 90% of the original Witcher 3 developers got fired or quit the company and now we're left with new "modern" day hires. If you google a pic of the staff from 2015 when Witcher 3 released vs now it's like a night and day difference.

@@qzoid3060 The only picture i could find comparing dev teams then vs now included a recent picture of all the female developers and was posted in a forum with people crying about "homofication". Even without that, it would be a reasonable conclusion, as the gaming scene is unfortunately full of people that throw tantrums and spew hate at any inclusion of BIPoC, queer people or sometimes even women in games. What other visual difference in the dev teams could they possibly mean, wtf are 'modern' hires?
@@atmkilla1 I won’t disagree that there are lots of gamers that do hate minorities, but I think they just mean the entire team back then is different to the entire team now, not specifically comparisons, and idk what modern hires mean tbf, that is a bit weird
The idea of Lambert starting the lynx school is easily the most laughable thing out there cause he's the most traumatized witcher when it comes to the grasses and being a witcher, he above all wouldn't want to jump start a whole new school with Keira.
Also I reckon CDPR just wants to start a clean slate because they'd have to determine a "canon" ending for TW3 if they were to make a direct sequel featuring Ciri or even Geralt, while the witcheress ending is a fan favourite, there's also the nilfgaardian empress ending which is very realistic still, and both drastically change how the world functions. Not to mention the state of the northern realms and skellige.
I would love to play as Eskel actually.
He left Kaer Morhen and is more or less a blank slate upon which a branching cool story can be built.
Make a new Witcher school? Sure!
Throw in an DLC with Gunther O Dimm? Hell yeah!
Eskels past and promised child coming back to haunt him in a weird twist of fate way? Nice!
The possibilities are endless and the potential is there.
I hope it’s just as good without Geralt! I’ll miss playing as him. But at least we’ll have the remake of Witcher 1 to play sometime. I want a character in Witcher 4. But I think it’ll be “build your own.”

A proper Witcher RPG based in the hey day of the witching profession would be amazing. Could even choose what school you start in to affect your play through
I think that both Ciri's and Geralt's stories are finished after TW3, and as you mentioned our choices in the game will change how their stories end. So playing as either Geralt or Ciri will in my opinion not be possible. Since this is a new saga, I would like to play as a completely new character. Maybe a new witcher from the school of the lynx, or any other school for that matter. Playing as Eskel could also be a possibility since he is 100% to live by the end of TW3, but maybe they might be saving him as a cameo for the new game. Either way I think that CD-projekt red has shown that they absolutely can create brand new characters that we as the players can enjoy, for instance Olgierd Von Everec, Gaunter O'dimm, Detlaff. So i'm hoping that we get to play and experience a completely new characters journey.
Yea I am betting on the cyberpunk route. We will play a new character first introduced in the game, but he will be somewhat customizable by us. A new generation witcher maybe?
Also I assume the ending that is considered cannon is the one that has all the people in the anniversary video alive and well. Seems reasonable.
Nah I’m guessing Ciri, they haven’t mentioned anything about it being the end of her story and there’s still so much that can happen with her. Not to mention the fake ciri stuff with emhyr. I just think there’s too much potential to let her go already
@@preyscalling Short story writer here, in my opinion Ciri is a bad protagonist. Again, great characters can be bad protagonists, but I think CDPR realizes that it wont work, for several reasons. Her powers, her being a mary sue by design, her having mostly overcome her insecurities by the end of the witcher 3. The cost benefit of her as a protagonist is not looking great. That being said if the new trilogy is a sequel, she will appear, maybe even as a major character, just not the player one. Thats just by two cents.
The core theme of the witcher series, is that Geralt is not inherently special, he is just a professional in a world that is very big and scary, and evil. He does what he can, and let those who can do better, if you change that perspective the witcher world looses it's danger. This is why I doubt we will ever play a sorceress in a mainline game as well. Though I can see that being possible in the co op one thats being made.
Ciri has a massive future ahead of her. She just started being a Witcher and if they canonize that future for her, the new saga would be amazing.

I really hope they use some more unused locations in the Witcher verse like Kovir and Poviss, Zerrikania. Maybe more of Nilfgaard: Nazair, Metinna and Ebbing. Or more cities like Gors Velen and Ard Carraigh. Or even the ruins of Cintra. Maybe even more of Tir Ana Lia and other universes
Most peoples favourite characters in the Witcher is geralt (set character) I can’t think of a. Single game where your own created characters is your favourite, those games usually rely on brilliant followers
Funnily enough the game that has a created character that compelled me the most was V from CP2077. Their relationship with Johnny really struck a chord. Plus, V's female VA is just phenomenal.
@@gracecalis5421 but ask most people who’ve played cyberpunk and the illusion of choice is very limited indeed. Hell the outer worlds have you more choices,impact and character identity then cyberpunk. I say this as someone who loves cyberpunk. The decision making is very minimal and of almost zero impact. What do you actually do that effects the world around you. Gang territory doesn’t change , your relationship is very minimal and even your origin actually impacts very little. V was a written character like geralt , you can choose to be a nice Witcher or a slightly less nice Witcher.

I feel like a lot people like myself can't see a witcher game without playing as grealt and they really tied up lose ends with all the characters they firmly ended most the characters stories i think and I hope we get a prequel if I would bet money i would say the game would probably take place of time of the last wish and sword of destiny probably combining the books some how
I fully agree with your preference for a pre-set character. That's what makes a strong game.
They could do both, let you create the protagonist physically, but give him a name and a personnality. Basically a protagonist exactly like Geralt but that you can create yourself.
I think the snow is a hint to the white frost. And I can see the lynx being a Ciri founded school
I would like The Witcher 4 to be about a young prodigy witcher (or inexperienced who learns skills throughout the history) and meets Ciri at some point on a mission.
i think it could be fun to maybe go north a bit and see some monsters from scandinavian stories. School of the moose or something haha. i guess lynx works as well. though i am not sure where that school hails if it was ever said.
I personally would like to play as ciri, creating you own character on a RPG game is a detrement to the story in my opinion, you not only have to record twice the lines for male and female voices, but also the decision making is reduced due to splitting the resources on making it cohesive with both alternatives. They didn't manage V from cyberpunk in a meaningful way because of that, you are a nobody with no past because of it, making it a bit shallow in comparison with Geralt, I think is better to have an stablished/new character with it's own past and then expand it with decisions as they did with Geralt.
While I do agree they should have a set character, I dunno if it should be Ciri. Mainly because they’d have to take into account all 3 of her Witcher endings and also rework the whole combat because, other than the throwaway line in BaW, she can’t take potions

I have a theory that we will play as Avallac’h in the next game due to what happens to him at Kaer Morhen in the 3rd game(going through the Trial of Grasses). Kaer Morhen is the wolf school and supposedly most of the cat school were elves and what’s a mix between a cat and a wolf, a lynx. This would allow the protagonist to be unique and interesting…him being a mage/sage(which could allow travel through different worlds) and an Aen Elle elf and it would also be a character people are somewhat familiar with. It might also explain why the medallion is covered in snow, the snow being the white frost which his home world was extremely threatened by and he’s got extensive knowledge about the white frost.

Counterpoint to your argument on custom character: Commander Shepard. People love Shepard...this was a case of just hitting the RIGHT amount of customization.
HOW FREAKING COOL would it be if u get to create your own witcher in 4. I heard there's a new witcher school called "the lynx" also. I've a couple ideas that would be epic. As mentioned, creating your own witcher & in the story u run into geralt & have options to become friends or enemies with him. SICK. Also new map with possibly the ability to revisit areas of witcher 3. Ahhhhh! New enemy types, more lore, more quests😍😍
People have high expectations when it comes to Witcher 4 not knowing that CDPR is not anymore the CDPR who made Witcher 3. The people who were the heart and soul of it, left the studio. Not to mention the fact that the studio went full on ESG score since 2020.

Exactly. Witcher fans choose to forget Cyberpunk as if a different studio made it. No, our once beloved polish indie studio has sold out and is now like any other dev.
Witcher 4 will be a complete mess
Happens to most companies that make it big. The stock share holders buy in and call the shots. So basically people who have no idea what video games even are or could care less. It’s like how do you expect a developer to deliver for fans when the ones in charge don’t even know that fans exist much less what the fanbase wants and looks for in a game. It’s about cheap gimmicks and dependance on consumers to be brain dead and gullible. Quite sad and pathetic honestly of what has become of these developers.
One thing is that gerald will be not the main character,another big one is that the people who made this artgame possible are no more there for another adventure. The witcher 3 is a pearl. The music,story,details,every conversation is through a dialog not just some words in the screen. I dont expect much from witcher 4.
My Theory: The two alchemists in Witcher 2 who paid Geralt to drink their mutagen that was supposed to give him back his ability to procreate naturally succeeded... And after that beautiful romantic night in Brunwich with best girl Shani during Witcher 3's Hearts of Stone, there's a little Witcher brewing. And that.... is our player character for #4. And Ciri is their Vesemir.
The reason why Witcher fans fell in love with the series is because of the characters, and I feel like they shouldn’t abandon that. They could go towards a Hogwarts Legacy route and do a prequel which I feel like it won’t be the same.

Most likely they will place the game before the events of the trilogy and the books, resulting in more freedom. I would love a game in Nilfgard with a witcher from the school of the viper at the height of its power and the stors could revolve around their fall.

I'm all for a prequel but I know you said you didn't want to make your own character but it would be nice if you can make your own character semi. You can choose from what Witcher school you are from that would be nice
Extreme Cosplay sidequest told of the handover of power from the last elven king of Touissant to the first human one in 781. The human/elven struggle about who holds sway is the perfect backdrop for a new series. Alas, unfortunately, I don't think Geralt will be able to time travel back. Everyone knows he hates portal's. The idea of another protagonist would be just to much to bear in a world with so many changes already, this would be one slap in the face too many.
Imagine this!
You start by creating your Witcher character from facial scars, to body type and hairstyles. Then you pick your Witcher School. Depending on your Witcher School you get certain traits, example: School of the Bear more damage resistance, Cat School faster movements, Griffin Magic resistance ,etc. Then, apart from your 5 Witcher signs, you could activate your “Special” school sign that would give you a different ability example: Bear school “Superior Shield” which you can take 0 damage for 5-10seg, Griffin school probably “Magic Proficiency” that allows you to activate your signs without any cool time for 5-10 seg, Viper School swords deal extra poison damage, etc. Having different schools will allow players to have different options when it comes to character creation.
Likewise, depending on your school, you might start the game in a different scenario (just like Cyberpunk, that depending on your background you get different cutscenes), and special dialogue options.
The setting could be in the era where witchers were more prominent, having the players feel more the traditional witchers life by accepting contacts and traveling from place to place. Or if not, after the events of Witcher 3, where a group of Witcher are still roaming around trying to survive their last days.
The RPG style will still remains by upgrading our skill tree, and we can even expand the bestiary with more added monsters and more armors and weapons.
Finally, I know I shouldn’t compare but… Baulder’s Gate 3 added Co-Op.. so imagine how badass will it be being able to play with you friend, much like Elder Ring, and both having different school backgrounds complementing each other during the battle, both taking down a huge monster boss!

A prequel does seem like a safe bet.
They could make a protagonist with a set name and set story , but the player can decide the looks like haircolor and stuff like that. Like in Mass Effect
It should be set in Zerrikania. It would double down even harder with the "fish out of water" theme that we already had with TW3 since Witchers were a dying caste. But over in Zerrikania, they practically don't exist at all. Plus a desert setting has so much opportunity to be downright gorgeous.
The feline school is supposed to be one of the shadier and less moral of the Witcher schools, so I hope this reflects in the new character. Game geralt was a bit too super hero-like at times. Would be nice to see the darker side of the witchers.

Would love to see you cover the character Milva if you get the time, i read into her a little online after finally concentrating on scoia tael deck in TW3 lol, and it struck me how awesome she looks but noticed she doesn't have the tell tale pointed ears like most associated with scoia tael. Anyway after about 60 seconds of reading she became one of my favourite characters and i'd love to hear her story given proper dues on here lol :)

I agree, I'd like to see a prequel era saga, set during the time of "Golden age of the Witchers."
Also, given Stygga castle is basically home fortress of School of the Cat, not to mention very important location in the books (where Geralt fights Vilgefortz for the final time in the book "The Lady of the Lake"), I'd love it if if could be one of those free-roamable locations if the game ever goes to Nilfgaard territories.
Personally, I'm thinking sequel. They'll make a vague canon ending for Geralt, and Witcher 4 and onward will be mostly disconnected. I'd wager it'll take place after the next conjuction of spheres. Renewing the need for Witchers. Perhaps some of the old schools will survive, perhaps they'll merge together to form new schools. I just don't see a prequel as a good option.

Geralt's story may be extended if this new storyline does not work. I'm not predicting bad games, just that the bottom line will dictate where the saga goes after that. Thanks George. As i said earlier today, have the new school use a new magical version of the Trial of the Grasses. A version that doesn't kill those who go through it. There's enough mages around who surely could come up with something. The Lodge ought to be more than capable considering how they're capable of fixing how they look and how well they age. This suggests to me that they're effectively mutating themselves.
I do hope its a prequel and not a sequel with a really well thought out character that you can build off of. If it ends up being ciri as the main character I most likely won't play it, because while I love ciri from the books she is way too overpowered of a character to be slightly interesting to play as in a new trilogy, shes like the most powerful being in the universe so there would be no worthwhile progression and it would just become super stale and boring, especially if they are making 3 new games with the same protagonist. If its the choice between create a character or ciri I'll choose my own character over mary sue.

Just because characters can die doesn’t mean they are out of the question. We know this if you played any of the games other than the first one
Going by the recent spate of games and movies, I should imagine Geralt will come out as trans and the big baddie in the game will be good ol' white supremacists.
Also, spoiler: Geralt will get captured at the start of the game and it'll turn out you'll be playing as Yennefer for the rest of the game to save Geralt.
There will be a lot more black characters this go around whether it fits the lore and area or not.

School of the lynx worries me, it suggests that the game designers are thinking of diversity ahead of story.

It's important to understand that the fact that this is not The Witcher 4 frees CDPR from the obligation of continuity and connecting Witcher 3 saves to the new Witcher.

They didn't denied the Fanon version of the School of the Lynx at the moment that they confirmed the Lynx medallion, so maybe they could take inspiration from that and Lambert could be the main character.

I definitely think it needs to be pre-main Witcher series bc otherwise it would have to take place really far after W3 for a lot of our choices to be buried.
As far as the protagonist, I definitely agree on a set character. CDPR has so much skill in making amazing stories deeply connected to this world that a custom player character interacting with it would feel wrong
I only hope it's good and has zero tie-ins with the netflix show..

The next witcher game would be amazing if they used the Hogwarts Legacy formula. You can choose which school you start from. Go through the trials. Become a true witcher in the height of their power. Interact with other witchers. Would be amazing
I don't like the idea of creating your own character. Why do we need to be a witcher in the witcher 4. I mean a game in the witcher universe but maybe the main protagonist could be someone in Temerian army someone who had a role in the books and maybe they can build on that. I mean it need not be called as the witcher. That could be a hell lot more interesting than someone who you make.

I know many people will disagree, but I absolutely don't want to play Ciri.
I like Ciri, she is fun, well designed, and becomes a witcheress in the ending I bet on being cannon.
Despite that playing Ciri would be like reading lord of the rings but Gandalf is the protagonist. It's just wrong, not all characters no matter how great are good as protagonists. Her powers are way beyond what I want in my next character in that universe. I hope she is there, maybe she is even a part of the same witcher school as yourself, but I would not want to be her.
A big deal in the witcher universe for me is exploring it as somebody who is not a child of destiny, and chosen for greatness. Arguably even Geralt was more powerful than I would have preferred since he is THE witcher, not a witcher. Still he was weak enough that all the evils of the world felt daunting, rather than something he could solve.
Also I hope he enjoys his retirement and takes contracts only for fun, like in the anniversary video.

A witcher prequel wouldnt allow you to make important world decisions.
I want a sequel. Far enough removed from the setting of the trilogy to be distinct.
And Ciri's story is likewise over. Same as Geralt. Shes not mutated. she might live to be 100. If shes lucky. Shes stopped the prophesy. Her plot armor is armor no longer.
She can die. Whether as the Empress of Nilfgard or as a Witcheress on the Path. She's mortal now.
If i had my pick id say a couple hundred years in the future, or immediately after Witchers became a thing after the Conjunction of the Spheres.

Picking up the story with Lambert, Keira and Ciri off making the school of the lynx and you play a fresh new witcher would be great.
Let Geralt rest. He's had a long road and he's been on the trail for over 80 years by TW3 let the man drink wine and enjoy retirement.
I think The protagonist would be something like V From cyberpunk. Where we would be able to customize their looks and appearance. But would be a set character.
i notice most ppl seem to prefer a new set protagonist, just like geralt, but i'm really hoping for a customizable witcher. yes, it's less conductive to fandom character debate bcos there's no one set canon to discuss, but i tend to get attached to my own characters way more than i do to set protagonists, even ones that i like. i tend to put a lot of time and effort into them going way beyond the story constrains in a way that set protagonist is not really allowing for, especially one so established in lore as geralt. on the other hand it would be easier for story progression to have a set character with given motives instead of giving players freedom, bcos it's a given that half of us would decide we're not interested in the main plot at all, or maybe we don't like the establishment we're part of and want to tear it down from the inside, the classics.
i feel the same as you about preferring prequel. it's really frustrating when we have the options to make those huge earth-shattering changes in political landscape just for them to be reversed to the default in the next game. like yes, it would add to the bleak and hopeless climate of the witcher setting, but it's just so easy to see the inner machinations of storytelling. like say, yes, ciri got stonewalled and grew frustrated with the nilfgaard nobility and threw it all away to reconnect with geralt - and you totally wrote it to show the stiff and unmovable nature of the existing systems, not to converge two worldstates for the sake of the game happening in nilfgaard
a set character just allows for better story integration. A full customized character always feels a bit disconnected from the world and immersion is key for the witcher games.
@@GutsOfRivia i don't agree that the customizable character always feels more disconnected, it just depend on how you customize them. they have a better chance of being disconnected, yes, but that entirely depends on how the player created them
@@niofo7713 I dont know just the feel that they had to account for every possible scenario of how the character would act, voicing the character as both male and female can drag down the quality because instead of one stream lined approach to the set character you lose some of that refined purpose built feel because they have to stretch it a bit thinner. You would always have to spread you resources out more for a customized character which I think would impact the overall quality.
@@GutsOfRivia that's usually true (tho you really can just do badly even if you have one single job). it's just an anecdotal proof for me, i feel more connected to the customizable character bcos i can reach for different points of canon to connect them in meaningful way. certainly not every player would or even want to do that, and you have to care about the setting to do it in the first place
@@niofo7713 I can see where you are coming from and it is subjective. But personally I always feel a game feels that bit more artificial when you have a fully customized character at the helm.
I'd like Ciri to be the protagonist of this game as it would feel more natural to me to continue her story and maybe they could even include Geralt as a mentor to her at the beginning

A game where we go to Nilfgard and Offier? I feel with all the need for diversity in modern games, itd be better to have us visit different lands along with the continent and experience different cultures rather than the Hollywood effect that confuses the population in Temeria for California.

The idea of making a customize character is too ambitious, especially adding the part where you can choose a school. Take Hogwarts Legacy for example, the world is great but it just seems so dead to me, so many things they left out, like the students no reaction when you use the forbidden spells. And since, they are too focus on making the world realistic and have a good graphics, they totally forgot to make a good story. I would rather prefer if they just make a new character with also a predetermine path or continue a story with an existing character with a good story writing.
Sadly it’s more likely the game will be a massive disappointment and downgrade to the standards the third game set. I hope not but I’m not getting my hopes up for it right now until we actually see it.
I would like it if we could create our own character. I know it sounds like a strange idea, but I feel that by doing so, we could feel a stronger impact from our actions. When I play as Garel, I usually think about what he would do, and it greatly influences most of my choices.

I think this guy's being a little too meek with his expectations of the next Witcher game they're going to be using unreal engine 5 which is stupid powerful I think they're going to be able to do pretty much whatever they darn well please it'll be like going from a freaking Ford fiesta to a Ferrari plus you got the next or current-gen console however you want to look at that Xbox series x absolute power house so I think fans will be very pleased I don't know what they're going to do either but I will say no other game I've ever played has invoked such emotion Wonder excitement as The Witcher there's just nothing else like it it's so very special you know I would even go so far as to say it's the best game I've ever chose to buy
