I owned a Yamaha 115 4-stroke on a 17ft. War Eagle boat. Absolutely gutless outboard. I had owned Yamaha 2-strokes up until that time and they were great outboards. The dealer tried every prop under the sun to make it get out of the hole and on plane like a 115hp should with little improvement. Reliable yes, quick no.
Interesting you say that, I have the 130hp 2 stroke and although it is 15hp more it goes like a cut cat, gets up and moves without hesitation. It's bolted on a 5.1m fibreglass bowrider so it's definitely not a light hull
Depending on the yr those might be the same engine. I've got an 05 Merc that's a 90hp and have a hard time finding quicksilver parts for it. Yamaha actually made the motor for Merc but also sold it under Yamaha.. wasn't the easiest thing to figure out but the Yammy parts are available so that's what's been keeping my boat going. In case anyone wondered to the best of my knowledge the 4 stroke carburated Mercs from 00ish-05ish in 75, 90, and 115 hp were made by Yamaha and Yamaha parts fit but you have to cross ref to the Yammy engine. The lower units however may be different.
Phillyfishguy after it sinks 4 times will it still run like my dads 2011 yamaha 90 4 stroke now im the guy that brought it back all 4 times and it still runs motor went completely under even sat under water 2 whole nights
Khalil G well we live on the lower YUKON in ALASKA and we have "cut bank" and my dad only has a 22x5"9" wide yukon raider aluminum boat with walls that come up like 2 and a half feet almost 3 feet walls but his got a 20 inch transom now our boats got to have both a front anchor to the beach and a back anchor in the water sometimes my old mans back anchor doesnt catch right and thats why it sunk 1 night it sat under water all night and early morning we were just having a hard time tryn gst the water out og my dads boat and back to floating but we have this small creek about 100ft away from where my old man parks his boat thar creek saved his boat and his motor

Big hairy deal, unless you're fishing in a tournament circuit who gives a damn if you make it to your fishing spot 30 seconds faster. As long as your motor gets you back to the dock, it's a good one.
I have an ‘05 115 Yamaha and had a ‘97Yamaha 40 hp 2 stroke. Also a ‘11 Yamaha vx deluxe wave runner with over 900 hrs. Zero issues with any of them. Never had a Mercury so can’t comment.
Yep I traded a 50HP Evinrude E-tec for a 75 four stroke mercury and was very disappointed. I thought there would be 25HP difference but think the E-tec had better thrust and the Merc feels gutless.

Mercury and Yamaha are the two best outboards on the market.
Evinrude is atleast just as good. Its just sad they are out of production

The V-hull planes quicker. Once on plane yhe modified Jon boat has less drag (contact with water).

The v hull also sucks in the shallower water the flat will smoke em in the shallows
its hard to tell what motor is on what boat? is the mercury the command thrust?
A fun race but its not a good comparison. Are the boats the same? Are the props the same pitch? Same prop blade count? Etc.

You can't beat yamaha warranty. This fix engines even after warranty is up, that is worth a bit of go.

Suzuki has a extended insurance plan after 3yrs it's not through Suzuki and they tend to deny alot of repairs/claims.
