Sir you have inspired me to start a model car build. Your concept and execution is wonderful.
I built model cars in my youth which led to full scale cars throughout my life. The bucket list has a roadster on it but in my old age a real '32 is financially impossible. So a model it is.
If I may, a suggestion to improve your soldering skills, tin your wire ends first before you try to make the joint. Also a little bit of rosin based flux will help immensely. Cleaning and tinning the tip of the iron will also help. I wish we could get together so I could help you solder. You certainly helped me with you video.
Just ordered a dozen tea lights from your link and I'll pick up a 'Duce coupe tomorrow at my local hobby shop.

You just made my whole week. There is nothing that makes me more happy than having someone come back to the hobby after years away.
I have been working hard on my soldering. I found that the most helpful thing was getting the rosin flux. That made a huge difference. I struggled to get my wires to tin. Now with the flux it seems to be going a lot better.
Any time you are in town let me know and we can hook up for coffee.

Great video made me thinkof things great to see the staggered solder joints apart from keeping the joins away from each other it also makes the wiring a lot thinner particularly if you have a lot of wires
I've since changed the LEDs I'm using, and they have longer leads so they usually make it all the way to the back of the builds. Much nicer. Also I have a better battery holder with a switch.

I used the magnet trick on some small armor I sacrificed a couple magnet and paint brushes but I made one for the hull and the other for the turret so I would have the same orientation
They are so versatile, I'm going to use them a lot more in my builds.

Good stuff Mark! I just found your channel. Looks like we run in similar circles. I've been lighting up my cars for years. I've even hooked up an arduino to add a spinning fan and a horn controlled with an old remote control.

I always wanted to go to Sweden. I love the mountains, and the history. Quick Shine is an acrylic floor polish. I use it instead of clear coat because I do my modeling in the basement and can't use strong smelling clear coats. I use to use Pledge Future floor polish, but that is no longer on the market. Quick Shine is as thin as water, and can be sprayed or brushed on. It dries hard and I found that I can polish it with Tamiya Polishing Media. It gives me a good gloss (not as deep as lacquer) but good.

Hay Mark, New sub here... Lol Awesome tutorial video on how to install the lights. Like you said there is 101 was of doing thing and this is simple as easy. Now for the arm chair quarter backing... Lol
If I may, get you some steel wool or the scrubbing pads for doing dish's, you know the silver or gold color metal ones(no sos pads or soap) to clean that poor solder tip. It is so black from not being clean it made me cry... 🥹
Take the pad and clean the tip while hot until it is shinny(er) and flow solder on it until it has a good silver coat of solder on the tip, this is called tinning the tip and it will conduct heat better and solder 1000% better. You need to clean the tip in between each joint and re-tin the tip every time (just takes a second). You will have a way better time soldering. See Paul's channel learnelectronics he has great videos on do this.
Hope this helps. You can also use fingernail polish to re-coat the wires so they don't short out.

I liked how you did this with the button battery. I have a short on my channel of the first one i did, Cop Out dragster about 10 yrs ago. I thought i had to use 9v batteries so i attached the battery and switch to the base. It works but not as nice as yours. I have lots of new ideas now, thank you and you earned a sub!

Yes!!! That wire is a game changer. It makes it passable to tuck things into small places for sure. I found a fiber optic lamp at the dollar store that I've been snipping strands off of for about two years now. LOL I'll have enough for about forty more years.
@@grandpamarkshobbies I had tried using BMF instead of wire for tight places, but there were a lot of issues, never got it to work right. I guess I'll be stopping at the Dollar store later LMAO.
I had no luck with BMF as a conductor, but the foil tape worked great.
I consider you the king of detail- I have a question: I'm going to run a vacuum advance to a dual carb setup, my question is this : do I have to run the vacuum advance to both carbs? If so, I plan run a hose from carb "A" to carb "B", thanks for any information that you can provide
First off, thank you very much for the kind words. As for vacuum advance with two carbs. You only need to hook up to one carb. I would hook up to the lower side of the back carb on the side opposite the linkage. That brings the hose around and out of the way. I saw you install lights in your model in an earlier video and got all excited about adding lights to my 41 Plymouth Coupe, and others. I went on Amazon and ordered a Third Hand Soldering Aid, a cheap soldering iron,(probably regret it), lead free, Rosen core, 0.8mm solder, 25 pack tea lights, shrink wrap in a bunch of small sizes and 30 12 volt, 3mm pre-wired with 0.25 watt resistor, LED Lights. After I just watched your video I realized I have the wrong LED lights, I think? I’m a mechanical guy, not electrical. I spent 40 years as a manufacturing engineer, mostly structural aerospace, and longer then that working on my cars. I remember way back when Abe Lincoln and I were going to school hearing about this stuff, but I never used it. It’s like taking a foreign language in HS and trying to read it 50 years later. Do you have any idea if these lights will work with the tea light setup? What if I removed the resister?
I really like your videos. Really a big help with great detail. I built model cars in the late 50’s, early 60’s. Last models I bought were AMT 63 1/2 Ford Galaxy and Mercury Marauder in 1963 or 64. Then I turned 16 and started working on real cars and chasing girls. Now I’m old and can’t do either, so I’m back to models. Things have changed a lot. Better glue, paints and tools. Models made in China, not so much.
OK, I am laughing out loud right now and the wife is giving me that look again. I think you will struggle with 3mm LEDs. Everything else is going to do you well. Here's the one's I just got (and love) they are really tiny, but bright as heck.

So, the tea lights and the 3mm LEDs came in. I’ve done some research, a lot of Greek, but gleamed enough to know they have a range of 9 - 12 volt.. A 9 volt battery lights them up very brightly. AAs not at all. I took a CR2032 out and tried it. It worked, lights up well. Not as bright as 9 volt, but good enough. The size is pretty good, especially for mid 50s and 60s. I’m going to order the smaller ones you recommended also for older coups and roadsters. By the way, I still have just one of my original cars. A 1962 AMT Impala I finished in 1963. It’s held up well, a little dirty from banging around all these years. I’m a little afraid to clean that 60 year old paint. @@grandpamarkshobbies
I am glad they are going to work out for you. It is a cool feeling when you finish and have it all lit up. I still get a charge out of it. . . (Bad Pun) With 2 3mm LEDs you will get about 4 days if they stay on 24/7 Not bad for that little battery.
How cool is it to have a 61 year old model kit. I think if there was a show in your area you should take it. It probably won't win anything, but I'm sure there are a lot of nerds like me that would think it was very cool.
Does the the tea lights the kind that is supposed to " flicker"?
The tea lights I got do not flicker. I had to start cutting out the chip because I can't find them that don't flicker anymore.
Hey Mark or anyone who may have tried it , but my question is with your Tea light battery an switch how many micro LED's can you run off of it an it still is bright . I'm tryin to see if I would need 2 or a different battery setups to run LED'S on a Semi Truck to do clearance lights an headlights an tail lights. I would more than likely do a separate switch an battery to light up a trailer . Or would I need to go to a bigger battery an switch setup ??
I've been able to light 9 of the 0402 LEDs for hours with a CR2032. Best part about that is I don't have to use any resistors. Well funny you asked. I will be doing a 3 LED spinner bubble light for a police car I'm goin got build. It is a curbside, so I will be able to add a small computer chip in it. I will do a demo on how to install the software I write and how to do the LEDs too. The computer side is VERY easy to do, so don't shy away from it. I'll be making it as easy as I can.
Well Mark...thumbed through about a hundert pages of comments but din't see what I wanted. So...after watching this video I ordered a dozen tea light which came today. You briefly mentioned the flickering and then moved on. And mine....flicker! Did I order the wrong lights? They look identicval to the ones that you show here. Also...is the only reason you're using them because it gives you a battery holder and switch??? Seems if that's the reason, I'd rather rig a battery holder and source some mini switches. As of late, the only tea lights out there flicker. That made me look elsewhere for something different and better. A few weeks ago I found these on Amazon and they are perfect. I used the tea lights because the wife had a billion of them and I could do it on the very cheap. Now you can get away with not having the LED flicker by soldering the hot lead right off the switch and the ground back to the ground on the holder. It works good and again they are cheap and work.
Yep, that's what I thought, that idea just seemed flicker out after I got the box and started messing with them. That 5 piece holder that you linked to looks like what you were after before you started tearing up your wife's toys. Thanks for the link, I just order the a set of 5 .....a buck twenty each, even though at this stage of the hobby I'm nowhere near ready to start lighting my models. Do you recommend this set up over the other one? Can you still solder the wires together instead of using the quick connect?
I like these a lot better. The leads are longer so I can get all the way to the back without splicing them. They solder up nicely. I haven't used the connectors yet.
what about taillights
The way the battery pack tucks into the trunk I'm afraid that I would eventually mess up the LEDs or the connections, so I opted out of the tail lights. If I can figure out how to hide the battery in the Mustang I'll do it to that.
