I remember "The New Lars" drew a very split reaction from the fandom at the time. A lot of people were uncomfortable with Steven taking over Lars' body without his consent and no one but Lars reacted negatively to that or Steven's meddling. On the other hand, Steven is a kid who meant well and it gave some interesting insight into Lars as a character. So, very YMMV
I'm willing to give Steven a pass on that morally. I just HATE any time a show asks me to watch one character masquerade as someone else. It's literally never fun.
God... i remember having legitimately LONG discussions about the episode. Like, on par with some of the discussions of the big theories that were floating around at the time. Was crazy
"The New Lars" is pretty interesting to me because on one hand, it makes me really uncomfortable in the sense of secondhand embarrassment and "oh god Steven you can't just remove someone's agency like that", yet on the other hand, it's really important to Steven's character arc to show how his powers (and meddling) can affect people negatively. Better still that you can see how the consequences of this episode affect Steven later on, judging by his reaction when he accidentally uses his powers on people in the future.
Idk I just think it's neat.
I really find it interesting how the theme of "it's an unchangable feature of life to be imperfect and flawed, and that is good" went over the head of so many viewers, who expected Steven to learn how to be a flawless hero or something. I love this show with all my heart, but adult fandom of kids' shows sometimes has big issues literary comprehension. "If every porkchop were perfect" seemed to never register with some people, I think. Oh well, every fandom has their flaws right?
If you remember the episode where Steven and Connie go to the movie theater, the box office person was Jane, Ronaldo's girlfriend in this episode
8:06 It was “Kevin Can ____ Himself” on AMC - 2 seasons, where it was half normal goofy TV comedy and half dark comedy-drama.
We've seen Jane a few times before. She's the ticket taker at the movie theater and she was one of the kids waiting at the bottom of the hill in Beach City Drift
In the New Lars episode I was like "Steven don't do that bro, relationships are complicated"
this was the first steven bomb that me and my brother would set time aside to watch together the night's of release up until the one that lead to the movie
That entire scene from 12:10 to 12:30 is maybe my favorite SU moment.
When the show goes for that anime aesthetic it really dives deep.
“ I don’t want that on my desk “. I like curmudgeonly (thanks autocorrect!) Katrina 😊
I could never watch Restaurant Wars unless I had mozzarella sticks. That episode would make me so hungry, so I would go to my college's grille and get my usual order of a chicken sandwich, fries, and mozzarella sticks (I know! Not healthy at all, but I would save some as leftovers and I only ordered from there every once in a while just to spend my dining dollars), I would then take my order to my dorm room, get comfortable, and just start watching.
Man, I miss that grille. And what the heck! I just had some small baked potatoes while watching this. Why is me talking about my college's grille making me hungry?
Wasn't expecting to see an "Initial D" reference in Steven Universe.
Always gotta be accountable for your actions, even if those actions are justifiable through deep psychological troubles
Big anime influence in those last two episodes. Also some great Connie content this time!

He's so insanely cute from that angle. 😂😂😂
these 3 are kind weird, feels like back to season 1 with the town centric stories. But we get more stevonnie so its all good.
