I'm discovering that I'm WAY stronger mentally and physically than I previously thought. I was basically immobile four years ago. Morbidly obese... well, I texted with my partner today. What did you do today? Oh, just a bit of stretching and an easy 5k run. Nothing much. Like, what the heck? It was me who said that?! 🤣💙

6 weeks ago is where it all started.
Surfing the web for pain relief stretches in my left knee. I came across your channel and didn't think much of it. Little did I know a seed was planted. Over the next few days, I started looking into running. It began to intrigue me, how someone could purposefully hurt themselves. Then it happened. I laced up my sneakers... I ran. It was ugly; gasping for air, whaling my arms for balance, and dreading the fat accumulated around my waist. Can't remember for how long I ran, but I just kept repeating it. Day after day, I found myself strangely enjoying it. I'm not sure if this channel was the root of all things. But it has been a catalyst. And for this I'm thankful.

Running has made me a better person, a happier person, a healthier person and a more spiritual person. I’m all in and truly enjoying my pilgrimage. Thanks for all you do Ben & Mary! One unexpected benefit I've had from running which surprised me a lot was that it made me a more flexible person. As someone who was always very rigid and didn't like change, battling with forced flexibility in running around weather or schedules made me realize I don't have to have everything work exactly according to my plans to have it be worthwhile. Lots of people already had this lesson but running is really what got me there.

I've been running with passion for 15 years. Of those 15 years I've been injured about 3. I tore a calf muscle 6.5 months ago, came back to early and reinjured it. Running has been taken away from me once again and it's agonizing at times. But, I read one time in a book, "you're not a real runner until you've felt you may never run again." Best of luck to all of you runners! I hope I'm back once again.

I am not sure who inspired me. More than 7 years ago my wife and I (we are from Colombia) were living in NJ, US, I was graduate student at Rutgers but our visa situation was horrible. She wasn’t allowed to work and she was done studying after her master degree in France, and she had a huge problem back at her parents home, so she decided to return to Colombia. At this point we have been living in the states for 4 years and I continued. the new reality of my braking marriage and loneliness hit me hard and compromised my phd. So, I started running. I was definitively not in shape. But I started and it improved my physical and mental health and I haven’t stopped since then. My wife and I are now together, I am finishing my studies and a big part of this is due to running I’m sure.

All my friends DNF and I were all alone, got hit and run by a car and survived to continue running despite broken ribs, 4km to FL from phone to all battery runs out and I went low point to gave up. Thanks for training help increase eyes adaptive fast to dark, I can see well and reached Finish Line before sending me to the Hospital for treatment. My aunt got me into running as a sport. I started running initially to lose weight and just get healthier overall. But watching my aunt compete in a triathlon (she's done a dozen Ironmans) was what inspired me to push a little harder, go a little further. And when I started seeing progress I tried a 5K just for fun, then another and another, then 10Ks, to halfs to marathons. It's helped with my anxiety, helped me be more outgoing overall, and helped me realize I can do a lot of other things like camping by myself, going far off places by myself, taking on career/personal challenges I would've been too scared to even consider 10 years ago.

Enjoying every minute of getting out and feeling like I’ve achieved something each day I work out. Sure it’s not easy and your a bit stuff after but I’ve been sticking to it and think I’ll stay with running after this as I’m already feeling the benefits.

Running has given me more than I've put into it (which is a lot)! Part of that is because of the gratitude that I express as a runner (I truly am grateful for all that running has to offer!)... Meaning, I look for and express positive moments and perspectives during my runs and because of running. Running has given me a grater sense of gratitude! Something that I recently shared/came up with was "if comparison is the thief of joy, then gratitude is the catalyst of joy." And while this is applicable to running, it's also applicable to life! Great video Ben and Mary!!!

  • @eddiegaul1903
    @eddiegaul1903 Před 2 lety +10

All great points Ben. As usual, you do a great job explaining some of the benefits. I think the biggest for me is an improvement in self-esteem and the confidence that I can do "hard things". Also it builds goal management -- if I want to achieve something, I need to plan / work for it. Finally I think I have a bit more body awareness and pain tolerance. I agree the running has a bit of a cost impact -- races and shoes aren't cheap. But once you got your shorts and a decent watch, you are good to go. I am a race junkie so that's generally where my money goes -- but it is cheaper than going to the bars every night.

To sort of expand on point no.2:
I've found that your experience of a place is so much more visceral when running. I love to run in a new environment, when on holidays for example, and I find that by running (exercising) as I move through the place, I feel more like a part of it, more aware, more a part of the nature I suppose you could say. Far far moreso than if I had a stroll through the place with a cup of coffee in hand.
There's something about not just being outdoors, but PUSHING yourself while outdoors, that has a multiplication effect on the value you get from being there.
Hope that's not too abstract - great video!

I only run for pleasure. I know my body and respect it. How many runners add stressful runs to an already stressful life ? How many runners take dangerous supplements to increase their performance ? How many runners become dependent on results and get depressed when they don't achieve them ? How many runners end in hospital during these mass running events because they don't care about their bodies ? Why do running events have to become more and more extreme ? And why do we never see tons of runners vomiting/shaking/cramping/convulsing during those events ?

I agree with many of the points. My change was one day just going out a little over a year ago, walking in and joining a gym, and then going 2, 3 up to 6 days a week. I decided I was a 'runner' even though I looked 'ok' I had terrible conditioning, bad wonky uneven hips, that made anything more than a fast walk excruciatingly painful after about 30 seconds. I still persisted, did what I could to get aerobically and build my strength and flexibility. Read, Read, Read, watch many youtbe videos on literally EVERYTHING to do with running, health, fitness, fixing my still wonky, but less wonky hips. I am technically a 'runner' now, but I still believe you are a 'runner' when you make the true committment to it, and say you will persist and keep going. I am up to 17 kms non stop, slow easy pace, no pain afterwards. I think anyone in doubt of starting, should just start 'something' even if like me they can't run to begin with. Just start with what you can and persist!

The needing to eat more and sleep better were the ones that I had to pay more attention to when I really started to run on a regular basis. I don't normally need to eat a lot but when I started to aim for longer distances I became soooo important that I eat and hydrate properly. I was a big beer drinker before too. @@ThisMessyHappy Actually, I feel very acclimated to the temps, but I did not cross train enough and I went out on my FM at 4:30 (my expected pace) but the elevation was 458 meters and the hills were very steep, at 22k my quads and abductors began cramping and that was it...I finished but with my worst time ever. I know what I have to do. I have a HM in September and Singapore full in December. If you are both ever down this way, my wife and I would love to host you.

Alex Yee and Eliud Kipchoge inspired me when I watched them in the Tokyo Olympics last year. Never heard of them before. I then took up running. I've never run before. Today I achieved my PB. 5K in under 27 minutes. Anything happened in the bedroom? Well, I do sleep much better, nothing much else. I'm almost 70. :-)

I was never a sporty person started going to the gym 7 years ago at the age of 41 and doing walking on the threadmill just to clear my mind , thoughts and life as i was going through a lot then quite by accident ended up running. I was barely able to run 1km on this big stadium and slowly bought it upto 5km and was feeling like im on the top of the world (now that i can run 5km) then the transformation started to happen you get more clearer in your mind, you get more self esteem, able to be proactive to life problems instead of being reactive.
Along with that came the confidence to increase the running distance ended up going from 5k to 21k in about a year. Did my first FM in 2019 took me 4hours and 40 minutes (flat land) learned a lot from that.
Post covid did my first FM in 2022 and did it in 4hours and 18 minutes (hilly terrain) nowadays train 4 runs per week and clock in around 300km per month. I work more, manage 2 businesses, life is more organised and always makes the time to do the early morning run.

Another great video guys. I was only saying to two fellow runners last Saturday that since I started running seriously, in 2017, I haven't had a migraine, not one. Is it connected? Possibly, they were caused by irregular sleep patterns and you mentioned better sleeping in your video so kinda fits.

Beautiful video and so true ❤️ I don't really want to think too much about the money (I have probably spent close to £30k in 7 years on running - kit, race entries, travel and my running journeys). The things that I have seen and experienced, the people that I have met and others that I have helped have made me an immeasurably stronger and better person.
I honestly don't know if I would even be here if it wasn't for my own running experience, I have also met and been inspired by so many people along the way and have some good running friends around the world. Have you read the book 'Outrunning the Demons' by Phil Hewitt which is a collection of stories from runners with some remarkable life experiences?

yeah when they were talking cost I was thinking they'd mention race entries... those can add up. totally worth it though, especially if you need goals to motivate you (to some extent, we probably all benefit from goals).
Haven't read that book - maybe I'll check it out. I just read "Have fun out there. Or not." collection of essays by Brendan Leonard.

I lost 75 lbs from between the ages of 48 to 51 (I’m currently 52) when I stopped believing that weight gain and aches and pains were inevitable because of age. I tracked my calories and protein, did cardio on the elliptical and lifted a lot of weights. But I still believed that I couldn’t run because of age and knee pain. I made this comment to a running co-worker who convinced me to give it a try under her coaching. I am 8 weeks into a 12 week base building program, with several adjustments to form and cadence. I am pain free and my knees are better now than before I began running. I have officially re-claimed another part of my life from the lie of being “too old”.

I started running early '22 bc I have always hated it, simple as that. One ought to do what one hates to better (to grow, they say) oneself. It's August and I'm still at it...imo I find it helps my mental state, and aerobic endurance best. Secondaryly, I find my metabolism and sleep improved. After six months, I tend to run 3-5 days a week and between 24-30k. I might add some speed work soon...but generally, Im fine with my fitness and have no ambitious running goals. My loftiest goal is to run a 10miler or a half in decent time perhaps, imo not very ambitious. Anyhow, I already reached my original intentions -- bc I hated running and gained aerobic endurance --
4/5 miles a run sounds right to my body, with occasional 8/10...
