    I feel like Garmin Connect needs the addition of Harsh Realities trophies - first puke in the bushes, lost a toe nail, duck walked home to avoid soiling yourself....so much untapped potential right there.

    i've recently fallen in love with running long distances and just today experienced pretty bad achilles pain. ive learned so much about what i've been doing wrong and where i can improve, but knowing i need to cool it for a little bit has been really tough for me today. but hearing you say, "it's part of that overall process of running for life" HIT SO HARD. i can go without running this week, maybe even the next. because i want to do this for life and will come back smarter and stronger when my body is ready. thank you so much

    Hey Team! In February I was on the couch being fat, and last weekend I did my first ever 50km event (whilst still kinda fat, let's be real)! Your videos helped inspire me, and motivate me...so thanks for that. Regarding friends: the ones who don’t get it as much, I sat down with them and explained why ultra running is so important to me, and showed on the calendar times I will be intensely training/racing and that I may be MIA then, but prior to or afterwards made set plans to spend some time together. Interestingly these friendships got even closer and these friends have become some of the biggest supporters to date! They didn’t feel pushed away or less important, but understood and wanted to be a part of the journey to help me

    Love this! I haven't lost any toenails yet, after decades of trail running, possibly due to my preference for wide toe boxes. And for every non supportive friend you might lose, you gain several very supportive ones! Running has given me a route to truly LIVE my life, instead of being stuck in a rut. I love races, and making new friends at them. I have invites to go to different parts of the country for races and stay at their houses. (And offer the same to them. ) A few times a year my husband and I will drive to a race within 5 hours, grab a hotel room, and make a weekend out of it. (We don't really take actual vacations, so these little breaks are huge to us. ) The goal setting, striving, excitement, social network, and little trips make my life SO much better than it was without running!

    Injury is also a phase to rethink your mistakes that led to it or finally get up to fix your running form like i did 3 years ago. I just did too high mileage to include those fixes into all runs, being set back to just a few minutes of running per day gave me the opportunity to watch and improve every single step i was making. Helped definetly more than the lost mileage in the long run (s).

I have PFPS that surfaces every time that I try to get active but because of how you both frame running as a sport for life, I’m still going to keep on my running journey. I’ve just started running a month ago after being very inactive for years, and I just love it. • @eddiegaul1903
    @eddiegaul1903 Před 2 lety +2

    Another fun video Ben. The other hard truth about running: is you always want to take it one step further, especially if you stick with running. You start with a 5K and knock that out. You get more daring and graduate to 10Ks. Eventually you work your way into marathons before debating if you want to do ultras. We constantly want to challenge ourselves. Very few do seem to be able to say "I've run a half marathon -- that's good enough for me". I've managed to dodge the shoe / apparel buying thing. I have 2 pairs -- one for 5K / 10K races and the other for everything else. I am addicted to races though, so that's where my money is spent in terms of running.
    As always enjoy your content and love seeing your advice / thoughts.

Everyone in my life thinks I’m bonkers, but it’s my favourite run of the week! There is something oddly satisfying about 24k steps before most get out of bed on a weekend🤣 As you have said before, I like the person I am when I run, & that keeps me in it even when the going is tough!

I know those moments are tools to draw on in a race-I’m learning a ton-but I was immediately asked by a non runner (hates running, but goes to the gym daily)-why didn’t you stop if it was hurting? Well, there is no better feeling in the world than surviving, continuing on & making it through! Those are the sessions that go in the memory bank!! I’ve come to the conclusion I have a running problem, & short term memory loss🤣 I tend to remember the magical & hard but survived sessions..& the ones that don’t work out, I take what I can from them then toss them🤣 I can’t Thankyou enough for the content you keep putting out for us-ur helping to keep me running, & I’m loving the process!!

    I started running for the first time in my life in 2016 August (at 42 years) and barely made 1Km slowly built on that upto 5km and was feeling im on the top of the world. Infact told a colleague of mine who is a marathoner already "im so happy that i can run 5km and probably i will stick to that"
    He laughed and replied "you will never stop" true to his prediction did my first HM in 2018 and my first FM in 2019. Could have happened much earlier if not for the knee pain that came up in 2017 where i discovered i have laxity in my limbs and the doctor (luckily a runner) gave some invaluable advice on how to improve and invested one whole year to improve on my self.

      I found that it was my toenails catching, just a little bit, on the top/toe guard of the shoe. I now trim them very close, every week, and apply lube for long events. Haven't had one since. (Except when I kicked a small stump on a night run)

    • @VIQID44
      @VIQID44 Před 2 lety

      I'm not sure as my mileage is not very high but I'm pretty sure the toenails will come off just because your shoes are too small and your nail is bumping to the tip of the shoe repeatedly. I'm pretty new runner my self but I still have run over 100k this summer and couple 10k and I have never had any issues with blisters or toenails because my shoes fit properly.

      I'm curious about that too...10k, two half marathons, then a 5k turkey trot, then another half marathon, plus two 10-mile trail races, and I've somehow managed to keep all my toenails (and avoid shin splints). 🤷 Maybe proper shoe fit?

    During my university years, due to having a gym on campus, I was a 100% bodybuilder who did zero cardio.
    I trained 6 days per week and weighed 95kg of pure muscle. I was jacked.
    Then for various reasons I decided to switch things up entirely and start running.
    *Running was the worst experience ever, even running 30min was a pain in the ass*
    I was out of breath, everything was hurting, etc. Really it was years of weightlifting and heavy muscles that made the body scream in pain.
    I was just not optimised for running. Fast forward 10 years later, I am about 15kg lighter, and run 3-5x per week at least 15K each time, no problem.
    Body is more like a gazelle than a lion these days. I look skinny fat. I no longer lift weights. But I run very well...I can run 2 hours of more no problem, without even music.
    What this entire experience taught me is that repetition, habit, is everything in sport. Your body then "morphs" into an optimised version for the sport.
    Now if I went back to lifting, I would have lots of trouble. Once I went into a sport store, and lifted a dumbbell lying around, only 15kg. It was difficult. I was winded.
    And before, I used to do curls with massive weights. 15kg would be nothing back then.
    The body is a very interesting thing. Unfortunately bodybuilding and running are totally at odds.

      @@garystefan8550 Hmm, I cannot give an accurate answer as I didn't have so much of a checkup done before and after. What I can give you is the feeling I have between the two body types. With the muscular physique, I was good looking, strong, but I felt unfit. I couldn't run up stairs without breathing hard, at a very young age (18-21). Now as a runner I feel very fit like an athlete. I can run very fast, up stairs, etc, and am not tired. However, I look more...gaunt, and I feel more frail than as a bodybuilder. I have to be brutally honest but I do feel that being a strength athlete is probably healthier. Just because the heart of a runner is under serious strain all the time, I do feel it. I feel the worst thing I did as a bodybuilder was ingesting tons of supplements (pre-workout, protein powders, mass builder, etc). All this stuff is garbage and in retrospect, a solid nutritious natural diet is all you need. I would say the optimal routine for me would be strength training with some relaxed cardio on the side. But right now, I am "addicted" to running and no longer want to quit. I'm just careful not to push the envelope too much because I feel that all these long distance runners destroy their hearts. Running is extremely addictive in the long run as it releases powerful hormones in the brain. One has to be wary of that.

    Running gets so expensive. The shoes. The smart wool socks. The underwear and the shorts. The shirts. The hats. The sunglasses. Headphones, Bluetooth because wires get old fast. The drinks, gels and food.
    The watches.
    Mostly the TIME.

    Skanky feet? No thanks. Since I started running in sandals exclusively several months ago (Shamma Sandals, to be specific - the BEST, not a paid endorsement), I've managed to avoid all skanky feet issues. You'd think it would be the opposite because of the exposure to the elements, but with the constant fresh air and unlimited room for toe splay, my feet and toenails have never been happier. Run through some mud (or something even more gross)? Nothing running through a puddle can't fix. I'm sold on running sandals.
