- Here is video footage of Jodi Benson's recording session for "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid. The project was lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken's first collaboration with Disney, and Jodi and Howard's second collaboration. (The actress had previously been cast in Howard's short-lived Broadway musical, Smile.)
This footage comes from the special features of the 2010 DVD release of the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, Though the on-screen credit gives the date for this recording as August 16, 1989, that's possibly a mistake, as the final film would be released three months later on November 17.

According to Jodi in a 2011 interview with Howard's sister Sarah, no one expected much to come from the project, saying, "You get a paycheck to show up at work for seven days, you’ll disappear into oblivion, no one will ever know, there’ll be no publicity and you’ll get your residual check every seven years. I thought it was really cool that we weren’t going to be revealed. They were just going to run our names at the end of the credits. That was it."
Fondly remembering Howard's directing style, she stated, "He directed me all the time in the booth. Now that’s unheard of. You never have anybody inside the booth with you because they make too much noise. But he stayed with me the whole time inside. I mean all of my lines, all of my vocals he was right on my left side. Whenever I’m crying and I’m doing my scene it’s because he’s looking at me, playing Triton. And then he’d get me to that point and he’d slip out and go behind the glass so that his motion wouldn’t be heard. So he’d get me to that pivotal point of the emotion and he’d slip out and he’d come back and we’d keep going.”
Still singing the song in almost every concert she performs at, Jodi makes sure to remind her audiences of where her performance comes from. "I give Howard all the credit and I’m very plain about that. I’m very clear, you know, every nuance, everything you hear, everything you like about Ariel is because of one man. [...] If you like the giggle or you like this or you like that - that’s Howard. That’s his interpretation that he gave me to read and then translate. So I don’t take that performance of Ariel as mine. It’s not mine, I just got to embody it as an actress but it was handed to me, spoon-fed on a platter by my director.
“I never get tired of singing Part Of Your World. I’m honored to sing it. I’m truly blessed. And I look back to that day with Howard Ashman standing at my left hand side in the studio whispering every line to me as I’m singing it. That’s where I go every time I hear the overture of that song starting so it’s a real wonderful memory that I get to relive every time I get to sing it with a symphony.
“So for me, Howard is alive and well and in my heart and in my performance. I feel very thankful that I get that. I can hear him, I can hear that going on in my head. It’s wonderful. It’s really neat for me, I’m very thankful.”

Howard Ashman was a very brilliant man. He knew how to get the actors to bring out their characters. He has Jodi sing in a dimly lit room to give her the feeling that she's singing in dim cavern where Ariel is. Disney had never had a guy like Howard Ashman since Walt Disney, himself. Howard had a great imagination. He was a broadway producer and put the feeling of Broadway into Disney movies. He was leading Disney into a new renaissance until he sadly passed away in 1991(from AIDS) when the rough cut of "Beauty and the Beast" was finished and the making of "Aladdin" was part way through. Jodi Benson actually sang this song at Howard's funeral, thanking him for all he did for her.
I know. I saw the footage from his memorial service. Howard Ashman himself might be gone, but his legacy will never die.
She worked so hard, and the end result was worth it. Ashman and Menken knew what they where doing. The final song packed such an emotional punch...it made that final, nearly sobbed 'wish I could be...' hit you right in the chest. Jodi really did manage to express the character's restrained intensity.

He was emphasizing more of feelings, the intense, emotional desires and endless yearning of Ariel, which could be delivered in various ways like the control of breaths and warmth and sadness of the voice tone, instead of just focusing on singing through the scenes and technical skills. He was definitely right and they have created us our forever emotional and magical song and the Little Mermaid ❤️ Thank you for your works...💕

Grace Gian he was diagnosed with HIV shortly before the 1990 Academy Awards. He didn’t let Alan Menken know about it until they were back in New York. He died on March 14, 1991 at age 40, about eight months before “Beauty and the Beast” premiered. I still remember that the first time I saw the film, there was a dedication to him at the end. Howard Ashman himself might be gone, but his legacy will never die.

Mad respect for Howard! Disney always had "I want" songs since Snow White but it's only after The Little Mermaid and "Part of Your World" that that's been the formula ever since, thanks to Howard Ashman. The little mermaid, beauty and the beast and aladdin's songs is written by Howard Ashman. It's a shame that just few of disney fans talked about Howard. He is literally the reason why disney is still exist now. Howard Ashman is a legendary lyricist who made Disney rise from its downfall and started the renaissance era of Disney, who recently returned from his huge career in musical broadway theater world that time. You can know that Howard Ashman was a great lyricist that he can even tell a story from a song. He also made the song dynamically switching from singing to talking and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable. He is the one who directing Jodi Benson to sing Part of Your World. We all know that the original Part of Your World will always be the best "I Want" song, not just because the nostalgia vibe but also Jodi Benson is really well and carefully directed by Howard Ashman, that even her breaths, stress and pause on each syllable are really well and gently cared for. Disney renaissance is mostly known by their songs. Before the little mermaid project, Howard gathered the whole disney crew for a meeting. He tell about broadway history to all the crew and they all were impressed at him. Fun fact: Howard did much more than write the songs on this movie, he also brought on board Jodi Benson, directed her during this song, changed an English butler crab named Clarence to be a Jamaican crab named Sebastien, wrote the dialog in the scene where Triton gives Ariel her legs, and also produced the movie with John Musker.
After The Little Mermaid released and became a biggest success in box office, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken was going to make movie called Aladdin. They've come up with several of ideas and musical numbers but Jeffrey Katzenberg then dragging them to a new project, Beauty and The Beast. Unfortunately, Ashman passed away 6 month before beauty and the beast was released and that movie was dedicated to him that even in the credit scene you can see that they gaved him credit to honor him because of how important he was. After beauty and the beast released, Jeffrey then took away all of Ashman's idea and script, almost 99% of them. But sadly some of the songs were removed in the final film
He is the one who bring the new element broadway musical to the movie. This is the bright spot where everyone started to wacthing to animated movies again, previously no one was at all interested in animated movies. That's why every single disney movie now has a song in it. Disney keep using this formula until now (but not as effective as in the renaissance) because it's Howard's legacy. You can tell how they respect Ashman that even in Beauty and The Beast credit scene, there's a statement to honor him

No wonder why The Little Mermaid be the first disney animated classic who get an oscar nomination. Also Beauty and the Beast is Disney's 30th animated motion picture, a dedication to Howard Ashman before he had passed away and the only classic movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Picture.
He was the one who brought “I Want” song to another level! I Want song is literally every disney movies now. "In almost every musical ever written... the leading lady usually sits down on something... and sings about what she wants in life, and the audience falls in love with her and roots for her to get for the rest of the night." - Howard Ashman.
He and his partner, Alan Menken, is the greatest duo that anyone have ever recognized in animated movie history. Also gain respect to Alan Menken, The little mermaid is actually his first score yet he can bring the magic with that scores. You can said that Part of Your World orchestra in the opening scene is the best choir you have ever seen and heard.

That quote actually referring to Ashman because he was Jewish and gay but still doesnt changed the fact that he really putted his care and love the the movies
You know what is funny? This was recorded exactly two days before, in the same year, I was born and The Little Mermaid is one of my very favorite movies of all time. I don't wanna say it was destiny and all that mystical nonsense but I find a special connection with this film, this song and Howard's figure, so discovering this peculiar almost coincidence makes all this more special to me. I was listening to this song tonight (because I often listen to Disney music and this recording is amazing) and I accidentally noticed that this song was recorded exactly 30 years ago, on the day! Wow :O I love it
This reveals the mystery behind the veil of time and emotion, showing why the vocal performance in The Little Mermaid has lasted so many decades. For those of us who were children when this movie came out, we know the impact it's had on our whole lives.
