Just underneath the shelf there is hidden under some frosted acrylic very bright leds that use very little power yet provide an enormous amount of light, ~ 3500 lumens at full brightness. I paired it with a 60 watt ac/dc power adapter and a remote control to control the leds.

Very fun project, I like the wire channel in the back and that is some nice soldering work. I would definitely recommend 2700 degrees kelvin, or warm white LEDs instead of daylight, though, especially for a bedroom. I would reserve daylight (5600 degrees kelvin) for something that is going to be used during daylight hours in a bright setting where you want to try to match the sunlight. Daylight will be harsh in a bedroom/ living room setting, where any incandescent lighting you have will be around 2700 degrees, or even warmer if it is on a dimmer.
Well done Lynn, great job.
Well done & Welcome back! - had not seen the hidden shelf mounting hardware before. For a safety note, folks in earthquake-prone zones should refrain from putting heavy items on a shelf above your sleeping head. I once had my wife's large cat go out of his way to push a 20-lb stereo off a shelf on to my sleeping head. So extend that warning to people w vengeful cats ;)
LOL that's even worse than my bad cat, who bites me if I don't feed her promptly.
I love this project! Will definitely have to try this once I figure out how to do the lighting section. Well done. And as for the tummy, beautiful sight to see!
Very nice.... Well was going fishing this weekend. My wife walked by when I was watching your video and said she wanted me to build her one like this, this weekend.....hummmmm. Look like no fishing this week...Lol. Loved your light.
Very cool idea and well executed too!
Nice.
Why did you decide to come out with the wires on the right? If you came out on the left, you could have run them down the room corner. Did you consider dropping them through the wall instead?
I picked this video randomly and watched it to the end. You are very talented and I love that lighted shelf project :) AND, it's still getting attention after 2 years old. Thanks for sharing your ideas and interesting project. Todd
That is a very cool project Lynn. Hope and pray great health to you and the baby.
Try to use aluminium strip 1/2" x 1/8" under de LED strip. it works like heat dissipator and the LED sticks better whitout the risk of detachment.
Good Idea!! Nice project!!
Love how the light turned out and like you said it is very sleek.
Excellent project. The wood you picked is beautiful.
Awesome idea. Congratulations on the baby.
To find studs without a stud finder (which can be wrong if on plaster or if there are pipes or other things in the walls), use rare earth magnets. The magnets will attach to drywall screws. Those screws are in the studs, and usually one on each side, so it's usually simple to find the stud center. #randomdrivebycomment
bloodswarms I use both and a tape measure. I rarely put extra holes in my customer’s walls.
I love LED lighting! This gave me an idea for a design I've not seen before, recessed indirect LED lighting for a floating shelf.
absolutely stunning result, can't wait to try this out!
Linn, I was so sorry to hear about your father--in-law. Thank you for sharing about him. The shelf turned out really good. Oh, and you are looking great.
Awesome, you do such a great job at showing all the details on how to do your builds!
This is great! I didn’t know you could buy floating shelf hardware like this. Very neat project.
Looks nice! I am glad you are back and running. I liked the finish.
Awesome. Simple, clean, and an approachable woodwork project.
Really cool design. I'd like to see this with one of the white strips replaced with red LEDs so you could use it as a nightlight (since red doesn't interfere with circadian rhythms). Also would be cool to add a timed dimmer (maybe Arduino) so you could set the lights for a gradual wakeup function in the morning. Good video that is giving me ideas :)
+Modustrial Maker Like the timed dimmer idea!
Nice project. I am inclined to add LED to many furniture projects in the future, and this was helpful!
Loved the lights, boy were they bright. I could not help but to notice the pattern on your trousers, I have a pair of PJ's with the exact same pattern.
+John Fithian-Franks Haha!
Very cool! My oldest would love a light like this for reading at night!
That kid’s not going to be able to sleep without the sound of a table saw in the background. :D
Love these LED projects
The kid's been hearing noises like that the entire time it's been in the womb. Maybe it won't be able to sleep *without* those kind of noises. Imagine that. Your newborn baby won't sleep without the soothing sound of a 1200 watt router etc.
actually sounds like hairdryers, vacuums and such tend to have a soothing effect on babies. they generate a white noise sound which is very similar to the sounds babies hear when they are in the womb. we actually turn on the hairdryer if our baby girl cant sleep and she'll be snoring within 5 minutes
Nice and bright.
Keep up the Great ideas, Lynn.
Great job Linn. I think that it's a really good way to get some lighting over the bed.
Thanks for sharing
+Roy Wrenn Thanks Roy!
Really nice design. I like the recessed look of the LED lights.
Nice light Lynn. Love your choice of maple for this it is perfect. A little tip for finding studs in the wall use a neodymium magnet and swing it slowly backwards and forwards on a string it will find the nail or screw.
........As usual you come up with such cool ideas for the home....... Glad the Dog approves of your work.....!!!
Simple setup and clean install. Keep up the great work!
Very nice idea and nicely executed. An alternative to spraying the clear acrylic sheet with "frosted paint" to get the frosted light diffuser effect is to sand it with very fine sandpaper, 300-400 grit. No fumes/VOCs, and no risk it will ever flake, yellow or peel off.
I always love your LED project. Very educational and inspiring!
That looks super Linn! 👏👏👏👏 Thanks for sharing!
Very cool and fantastic execution!
Really, really, really beautiful work!! Congratulations, from Brazil!
Good idea
Awesome, love the combo of woodworking and electronics.
Wow! That *is* a lot of light! :)
Lovely build!
VERRRY NICE. GLAD UR BACK.
That is awesome, Linn. Great idea.
Very nice work, results were awesome.
Fabulous shelf. Thanks for sharing how you made it. :)
VERY nice design and great results!! Beautiful!
Darbin, first and foremost Condolences on the loss of your father in law, and secondly, thank you for the courage you give me to delve into use of leds
Really, really beautiful work, Linn!
+MC's Creations Thank you!
Another great build Linn, well done..... 👍🏼😊
+Marc Thanks!
Awesome work, Lynn!
I like. Nice job Linn
Great looking shelf! Love your works ❤️
+Kenneth Nybom Thanks!
Good job on the frosted acrylic.
Awesome job Linn! 👍
excellent idea, congratulations on the beautiful projects you make
That's so awesome! Great build!
Could you please show how you hooked up the power?
Absolutely LOVE this idea. Could I connect the power to two more shelves in an almost waterfall effect then the final shelf hide the cords in the gyprock then plaster over it? I want to do this for a bar area in our new home.
Looks great!
Hope your pregnancy is going well! My wife and I just had our first baby at the beginning of this month and it's fun getting to see you go through the process as well!
+Voth Quality Creative How fun!
This was so cool to watch
Wow that's beautiful and bright..
+Sylvia Lategan Thanks Sylvia!
Awesome project. Beautiful work.
Very nice project. Any concern with heat buildup in the cavity where the LEDs are mounted?
Mmmmm, I would be concerned about heat build-up too. It may reduce the life of the LEDs.
Absolutely love the look of this.
What a great shelf idea! Will be making one of these!
Once again my wife asks me why I don't build neat stuff like Linn and once again I remind her because Linn is half my age and knows what she's doing. Thanks a lot.
Well if you are only 40 then you should not have any problems with making things like that. As to the knowing, knowing just takes a little time.
Albert I'm sorry you missed my humor.
Mach, I'm sorry that you missed mine. My wife tells me the same all the time. I am currently in the process of building a workshop so I have someplace to make things for my wife.
+MachTwo57 😊
My reply, if so inclined, would be to tell the wife that she is more like Linn than you are so SHE should build things for herself.
Definitely dig the shelf. I've had a similar idea using aluminum and resin that I've been meaning to get around to making. I would have secured the acrylic with small metal tabs though, so that it's easy to get at the LED strips in case anything odd happens.
Great project! Just the one I would like to build over my desk. Is there any heat build up issues? getting hot? Also, is the LED strip stays well on the wood? (not fallen off of it?)
Nice! I want to build a similar thing above my oven in the kitchen. I have a large slab of Black Walnut with one live edge. Thanks for sharing!
Beautifully well done 👏👏👏
Love this for my shop great job 👍👍👍
Nice job. I have yet had success with similar builds of my own where the leds would heat up and allow the adhesive to release and the leds droop. This was when sticking directly to wood. I was finally able to overcome this by sticking aluminum duct tape down first and then the leds over top. Doesn't move and the added benefit is the reflective properties of the aluminum tape increase light output a bit.
Sean Knight You are right ! led strips will drop down when they heats up on severall times. There must be some kind of ventilation and extra glue across the strips to hold them in the place. Those strips may be very hot without some kind of heatsinks used.
+Sean Knight I have used these types of lights on many projects now, and as long you stick them to unfinished wood I haven't had any issues.
Clean and simple and Darbin likes it - what more could you ask for? 👍👍👍
Looks great! I like the new mask too.
Great build, Linn (and Matt) (and baby) (and Darwin)! Thanks for sharing.
+barbara kvistad Haha thanks!
Very nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Great shelf. Hope you all are doing well.
Great Job...Really nice looking shelf and cool idea...
Beautiful project
Very cool. It looks great. I'm going to use this idea to build a shotglass shelf.
Lovely video as always and a neat idea!
+Figments Made Thanks!
Awesome idea! I love it.
hello, congratulations on that baby that is on the way to you as your dad is a blessing, also congratulate you on the channel to my wife and I really like it. A greeting from Tenerife Spain
You are awesome Darbin.
Damn cool! I want to do this! I knew I could do it with a sheet of acrylic! Thanks for the tips/ideas! I'll be doing mine with a single Philips Hue LED (really bright strips yo!) and a much thinner sheet of acrylic (probably 30% as wide as the one in the video!) Can't wait to embark on this project
I love how it ends up so nice, but i need a full tutorial on the electronics of this please
Excellent work👏👍👍👍
Good to see a helping hand...you need it. Nice job!
+Shaukat Hakim 😊
remote control to control and execute the led. Nice .
Very nice work!
Very nice project!
Always perfect led and wood combination ....I like that alot !!!!
Very nice, Linn
Ahhh!!!! It's not centered over the bed... Eye twitching....
Nice project. It turned out really well.
I noticed that. Solution: Move the bed over a little.
@Anon, yeah had the same thought that would bug me all the time, second it would looks nicer if she run the cable on the left hand site along the corner of the wall, but so far nice job
Also I would have hide the wires to the other side.
Glad I'm not the only one with OCD.
MUST... BE... EVEN... AARRGGHHH!!
(After all that work, I think I'd have ran the cable in the wall too)
Very nice job. Congratulations on your baby. Sure he or she is born by now.
Awesome! I had a similar idea with bookshelves on the sides. Kind of a really big headboard. Just mounted to the wall. :D
+Bathrobe Carpenter Sounds like a nice project!
I was looking for something like this.
I love this.
Excellent project, as always...and a very cool baby-bump! Cheers!
+Rick Van Hooren 😊
Great project, wish you well with the baby
Awesome!!! It turned out great!! Mahalo for sharing!!
wow. great vid. much congratulations for your baby
Great Video, neat work too, I really enjoyed your Techniques.
