Wish i could have been around when this was a regular sight
Having grown up along the N&W between Williamson and Matewan West Virginia, this very passenger train "stream-liners" as we called them was a daily, common sight. The mighty steam locomotives, pulling hundreds of cars loaded with beautiful, shiny-rich hard eastern Kentucky and West Virginia coal... with a whistle so long and lonesome as to inspire and stimulated one's soul... This was my childhood America, and yes, I wish you could have been there to witness... this time of our country's pride and greatness. A time gone with the wind... A time never to be forgotten.
during my 25 year career on Southern and NS railways I worked on and around this living fire breathing beast of a machine several times, it is fascinating to watch. one night when the 611 was laying over at Hayne Yard I was assigned watch duty and spent the night shoveling coal in the fire box to keep the water hot to make steam for the Saturday morning excursion. sitting on that engine all night listening to the noises it makes was truly a once in lifetime experience.
Beautiful!
A British lifelong rail enthusiast, I have also long been an admirer of those huge American steam locos: what a loading gauge you had to play with!
Enormous outside cylinders ..... stunning.
Beautiful indeed John. My father lost his life, 1943, crushed by a rock fall, in a coal mining accident... I was four at the time... I often think of the war years and the contribution coal miners, here and in Britain made for the effort. Clearly, soldiers, sailors and airmen paid the greater price, even so, we must never forget the cost, the price paid by industrial workers.
there was a day when this was everyday...
Indeed.

I Love the comment
love this video! I'm 75 years old and I can remember steam locomotives when I was a young kid. early 50s. I wish we still had them.🤩
Majestic. Love the old steam locomotives, and this one is a beauty.
Simply fantastic shots especially with the drone, I think, for an Aussie it gives us a great view of how the other side lives. Just keep sending em.
Poetry in motion, excellent camera vantage points and editing. Very professional. Love that lonesome whistle.
This is one of my favorite locomotives because of how aggressive the whistle is, the intense wheel slip and just the mean look of the train. Way to go
I'll be impressed with train simulator when it starts looking like this.
Alex Knight How about Trainz Simulator 2019?
@@ismarymedina9899 they're all the same.
aCup0fBlackTea_ The difference is that 2019 has more trains and better graphics.
World/scenario creation of Trainz + Graphics/physics of TSW + driving/VR mechanics of Derail Valley and I think we have something pretty close. Though I can't begin imagine the pc specs for a game like that. (I can smell the empty wallets and burning computers from here) x3.
@@ismarymedina9899 Trainz has worse graphics than Train Simulator or Train Sim World
I love the multiple camera angels used! Awesome video!
I have to disagree. He's not holding any one shot long enough and the constant jump cuts made the video unwatchable for me. Gorgeous locomotive, though.
Disagree, multiple angles keeps interest and stops the video from becoming a long boring look at one angle. Can pause the video if you need to study something. Brilliant video, many thanks.

Patrick3751 almost 1m views for this video🙂🙂

Sounds alive and in a way it is. I like that the diesels didn't help with the pull out.
The drone shots make it look like a great layout! She IS the Queen of the Rails! Thank you!
and thats why they now need to be licenced lol
Gotta love trains! Love the whistle sound, wheels ,steam !!!
Think about how much knowledge and experience went into designing and building this beautiful engine
This train oozes manliness.I shaved this morning and I now have a full beard after watching this
Biker Boiy someone needs to take a nap lol
Biker Boiy someone needs a time out lol
Seal!
I'm pregnant after watching this video, and I'm a guy.
coty vegh llllllll
Now this was awesome! The multiple camera angles of this futuristic beauty were nice! Slipping moment 2:50, which was a great shot!
Очень красивая машина , тепловоз не в какое сравнение не идет с этим красавцем!
She's the "Queen" of steam
I don't think it gets much better than that. WELL DONE!
You have GOT to love the sound of those steam whistles! If you don't, you don't have a soul. :)
JRBlood Was
@Puddington Heritage Model Railway do you use the train for commercial purposes?
Personally i find the whistle annoying, i prefer the sound the piston exhaust makes.
I honestly love the sound of a Pennsy 3 chime but this whistle fine.
Toot toot boooois
I love the loco. I don't know why people give you bad comments. it's great.
Really cool...do this for an R&N 425 fall excursion and you'll truly get an incredible wheel slip compilation on their return trip!
AMAZING. You got incredible footage of my favorite steam engine!! Thanks for sharing 😊Love the wheel slipping on the bridge!
Thank you very much!
I've seen this video before and watching certain videos numerous times just never gets old. If I didn't say it before thanks for posting it.
the drone shots always make these events wonderfully surrealistic, as if one was a bird overhead
That's one of the best video of a steam locomotive I've ever seen!
tenorbanjo4 Have you watched Nikki Locomotive on CZcams ?
Great job on the sound - absolute monster!
Fantastic! This is my favorite 611 video by far!
That was some EXCELLENT coverage!!!!
WOW, sounds amazing, So menacing looking. This style of train is incredible.
What a difference years can make. Thinking of the real men that build this incredible machine from back then and watching the men with their pink tablets filming it today.
Love the drone footage! Great clarity!!!
Nice with all the different camera locations and Drones to video Trains....awesome
Superb footage. She was working hard!
Beautiful. Not too many steam engine go the sleek full body coverings. This is a gorgeous train.
Puddington Heritage Model Railway that's a crude way to shit on our heritage... Its better than anything you have designed lol...
WOULD LOVE TO RIDE HER AGAIN!!! MANY THANKS!!!! Howard M.😀😃😁👍👍👍👍
I recognize that yard from the infamous 630 mother/slug combo break down..That was a fun day.
The shots of the side rods look frickin amazing
Even in a 4.5 minute video you still amazed me. Good work!
Great movie, beautiful shots. The steam age built the world. Timely homage.
Fantastic views from locomotive-mounted cameras and drone. Wonderful! Thank you.
Unfortunate whistle.
Absolutely beautiful locomotive.. I’d love to see these steaming the rails more regularly..
What a beauty! And great use of cameras on and off the locomotive.
Stunning filming! What a noble train!
Just beautiful, beautiful :) Thank you for sharing :)
Very soon I am going to the Strasburg railroad to have a cab tour in this N&W steam locomotive
It's like they're alive. Amazing.
im not into trains ... but this beast, is something else... it is, beautiful !
Absolutely beautiful.
Simply amazing footage!
Neat train, it’s beautiful. Thank you
That’s one mighty living fire breathing beast with a phenomenal deep whistle sound and man I wish I could have been there to see it in action
the norfolk was my favorite train growing up
WOOOOOAAAHHH!!!!!! Just.... like.... woah.... My mind has been blown. Awesome video guys! :D

Spectacular footage. Excellent work.
Outstanding video, well done.
the drone footage is amazing!
Reminds me of the days we had special train rides from Louisville to Nasville.
Amazing footage.....just amazing!
Grate video . This locomotive is Awesome. Loved this vid
A thing of magnificent grandeur and beauty!
My uncle has a Norfolk and Western passenger train from this era on his layout. It’s my favorite to run when he has a NMRA open house.
Bravo......excelente producción. Felicitaciones.
Drayton, another fine video. Congrats!
Nothing is more grand than one of these in full steam.
No, it's amazing footage of an amazing loco, with just a little bit of wheel slip.
Nice camera angles.. !! Mcdowell co here.. I see this every chance it's coming through!
Well done. Almost as good as being there.
Even the biggest steam locomotives in Europe looks small compared to this beast.
huib2908 you should see the size of UP Big Boy 4014
lol, that's cute
Pardon me, but I think the u1 is 87 ft long, and the big boy is about 134 ft I think. That being said, I think it's safe to assume that the big boy makes the U1 look like a shunter. It's still a really cool locomotive though.
The LNER U1 is actually smaller that the 611 shown here. LOL Its interesting though.
would like to point out the big boy was cooler, stronger, and more reliable.
The drone shots are amazing.
Incredible... Its funny seeing myself in the video haha... Incredible job man
Awesome video!!
There is a sound to this machine, that seems to have it's own heart.
Great video!
wow. epic footage and camera placement! you know, its funny, 20 years ago NS said they would never revive the steam program...
Tony Fleetwood ya but they don’t use it for frieght
It’s a heritage
Cooooool awesome and Nice catch
Can't wait to watch the full video! It's amazing how you can manage and put together drone, tripod, and go pro footage all together like that.
Beautiful sound!
Love those steam whistles, and N&W's are tops!
Magnificent!
Nice work, Drayton!
Hello! very nice video thanks for you.
That was staggeringly beautiful.
Amazing footage. We have a severe lack of steam engines up here in Canada. Maybe someday I’ll make the trip to see 611 in action.
True but CP's 2816 is supposed to make a cross Canada trip in the near future
+bwan13 Not with Harrison in power. He has stated that he hates steam engines. I've heard that CP 2816 is in "serviceable" condition but that was months ago. If it is going to make a cross country trip then it's not going to be doing that with Harrison in power.
+Blake Trafford - Mile Post Productions
According to Canadian Railway Observations' October 2015 issue
"Coming as a pleasant surprise to many of railfans, several trusted CRO sources reported the Canadian Pacific Railway is planning a cross-Canada tour with CPR's 4-6-4 H1b Hudson steam locomotive in the summer of 2017 for Canada's 150th birthday. In September, CP's website posted the company is seeking experienced crews and retired maintenance workers experienced with the maintaining the mechanical workings of steam locomotives.
This event with "The Empress" will be an ideal vehicle to showcase the Canadian Pacific Railway's rich history in Canada, and the railways vital importance to the development, settlement, and industrial growth of our great country. We can all hope this historic event guides to fruition!
However, that exciting steam news was followed by a troubling comment we received. A CP source indicated this could be the final official company event for CPR #2816, and she could be sidelined for good. He mentioned following the event in 2017, the locomotive could be earmarked for donation to a railway museum, (or as CP has done of late, possibly put up for auction sale). However what CP will do with the "Empress" following the Canadian event in 2017 is unknown at present. We can hope that where ever she goes, she will have a continued life in operation somewhere in Canada."
What a magnificent creation.
That sound is lovely
Pretty girl, isn't she?
It`s true :)
Amazing beauty from another era ❤
Awesome footage !
I gotta love the sound of that whistle!
such a beautiful steam machine !!!!
Holy crap - I've obviously been underneath a rock. I thought this thing hadn't run since the early 90's! When was it restored and returned to operation??? And this was 5 years ago, egg on my face lol.
Spectacular! ;)
+trainfart Thank you. That means a lot coming from you. I love your videos!

611 isn't supposed to slip! Haha, great video, love the GoPro shots.
+Geared Productions lol, she has a relatively low factor of adhesion so she is more slippery that others.
