A Stein stein would be incomplete without a tiny Toklas. Bookshelves without books are irritating. Most of my college friends weren’t sober enough to get through that fake joke thing. I was unlucky to graduate from a non-nerdy high school and to them go to a party school for college, so my awareness of all I hadn’t read didn’t hit me till BookTube 🤓

I was unlucky (well, it depends on your POV) enough to hit high school at the time the Russians put up Sputnik and our President said to all of us ....'study science, math, technology" (what we all know know as STEM) !!!! Well, my HS took them seriously and out went all of the Lit and Social studies etc. Then off to a college that was serious about the same things, more STEM. Now that I am retired I have huge holes of knowledge and I am rushing to fill them. OMG, all of the holes filled with wonderful gems and I am loving it!! So much happened, so many wonderful people wrote so many wonderful things!! So, I guess I was a nerd but kinda reverse nerd !!!

You seem a very unlikely person to be annoyed! I can’t believe your husband found that incredible mug! Amazing. Thank you so much for doing my tag. I’m really flattered. 💛

That Gertrude Stein mug is fantastic.
I have a real aversion to spoilers, but then I think about going to the movies and getting irritated by all the trailers giving away so much plot and by the time the actual movie is over, I can't remember any of the trailers or any of their content. This would likely translate to book info, too. It's just a reflex I have.
    Great answers, Hannah.

    The Gertrude stein! 😍
I am not bothered about spoilers but I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I am a fan of them. However, sometimes I need to read the end of a book in order to decide whether or not to proceed with a novel that has become a struggle.

I love your answers! I also dislike when a book’s plot depends on characters not having honest conversations with each other! So aggravating!

Interesting history on the deckled edge. I love your story at the end where you admitted you didn't "get it'. I always watch you when you post but I have never commented until now. The time has come for me to say that I appreciate your warmth, your humility and your integrity.

I am embarrassed !! I knew what deckled edges were.... however, I had never asked WHY ?? Why don't I ask I WHY to so many things ?? I just accept and move on!! Now that I know that I NEED to ask WHY I am trying to do it as often as I remember !!
You know the thing that annoys me the most is when books are actually published with typo's ... the kind that a real reader would pick up on in a heart beat but "spell checker" won't ! It is happening more and more lately as it is just cheaper to use spell check, I get that however when it is actually the wrong word it tosses me out of the story completely and I notice it so often in the newer releases. ...ex: my character went to the "films" but the typo had her going to the 'files'.

You have some great answers! It’s interesting to hear about how book publicists can be annoying-I’d like to review books professionally more often, but hadn’t considered the potential pushiness and pressure. And I adore the Stein stein! 😄

Since you asked for honesty, I must be honest. I really love shelving books by color. I scoffed internally the first time it was suggested to me, but I tried it, and it made me feel warm and fuzzy. Perhaps it's that I only have a few hundred books, perhaps because I enjoy the objects as well as the stories and knowledge inside them. Maybe I spent too much of my life in dreary blacks and grays. I don't know why, but I must confess. Thanks for the stories in your video!

I often think about the difference between having had or not a “stellar education” - there are advantages both ways. I just remembered the first time I heard _Ulysses_ talked about, I took it that _The Odyssey_ was referred to, but managed not to say anything stupid. Then when I figured it out you can guess what was the first book I went out and read.
It might be fun to see the movie adaptation of your college years! (I suppose a memoir would have to be written first. 😅)

I loved this tag and your honesty, Hannah!!! It is exciting to have unknown books and authors recommended! If the recommendation is made by someone who has previously praised some literature which I myself love, there is a good chance that I will like their new recommendations as well!!!😊

A spoiler fan?! This is a new twist on the tag. Very interesting. "Greasy detritus" lol. I do love that stein! I do remember the journal and paper making fad of the 90s. My first reading journal was a gift that a friend made in one of those classes. I agree about unused or squandered bookshelf space. I really enjoyed this video!

Same here for empty bookshelves or shelves filled with other stuff. I helped my non-reader mother-in-law clean out some shelves once and they were filled with her old college books. As we took those books off she said, "Bookshelves aren't for books, they are for pretty stuff." I don't think she saw the irony her use of the word bookshelf.

WOW, what an INCREDIBLE approach. Normally, I prefer to know as little as possible about a book, so I can piece the plot together in my mind, as I go along. But I love your thought process!! Knowing what the plot is so you can sit back and enjoy the prose/the author's execution. I'm very tempted to try this. 🤔

I love that Stein, Hannah. Ive never seen a Penguin Classic with a yellow penguin but maybe since it is only on the spine the orange ink has been sun-bleached?

    • @HannahsBooks
      @HannahsBooks  Před 4 měsíci

Very belated response here-but the front is yellow too, and it is shelved next to other penguins of the same vintage, in a shady spot. I assume the printer was out of ink or something!

I'm annoyed by the fact that my town was where Agatha Christie grew up and had her holiday home, so I hear more than enough of my least favourite detective writer. Her plots are so obvious, and although her limited vocabulary appeals to readers whose first language is not English, I feel it inhibits her style. This was a fun video, Hannah, thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm not keen on "deckled" edges, they seem like dust traps and make the pages harder to open. I have old books that were cut and those are nice to see.

people who ask you "have you read.." or "what do you think about..." when they really mean that you are an ignorant, illiterate person. I got my wonderful, totally enjoyable revenge once - I still think back with such satisfaction. I overheard this snob asking another student "what part of Chaucer did you like?" (meaning 'you poor uneducated soul'). He did come to me with his snob-question and I answered (truthfully) that I couldn't give him a real answer because I'd only read the Priest's Tale and the Wife of Bath and what was his opinion of those two? He just stood there. Oh I enjoyed that!

Spoilers are so hard to avoid sometimes, I remember I had one book where the dramatic reading was later in the book and someone commented that it was a spoiler, the hardpart was that the information gained was practically shouted from the description and the image on the front cover. I don't mind spoilers myself, sometimes such things can generate interest for me moreso than the description does. Other times it can kill the excitement, it depends on how its done I think.

It took a long time for me to realise lots of people are not readers. I have chosen books for people based on profession, common interests, their interests and given these books as gifts. Later I’ll refer to the title or the author and the person has no idea what I am talking about: they have not and will never read the book.

I agree with most of your list. The one that really annoys me it the obsession with annotations, I recently read a second hand book where one word was underlined on a page, what is that about? There seems to be a trend these days, that annotations are somehow essential, can't people remember what they are reading???

Too funny about Miss Marple. Many mysteries can be solved by choosing the person with a perfect alibi, or the absolutely least likely person to have committed a murder.
