You sound very accomplished, done a huge amount of miles... ...but when You complain about the handguard I thought to let You know about the difference between the two You show/mention (with and without the metal enforcement in them): the one You liked, the acerbis, with iron in it is for motocross/supermoto racebikes, so when you hit something, your hand doesn't get hurt, because it's strong and not breakable! but the tourtech one, the less strong without metal is breakable on purpose as well as why the other one is strong, it is for everyday traffic use, so when you hit other cars or anything with less speed than on racetracks, it either bends or breaks, so it absorbs the power of the impact, and your handlebar stays harmless with more chance than with stronger metal based one, cause with that you definitely bend your handlebar and may effect the front forks as well! I didn't mean to be a smartass, but felt to share this info :) - I ride a yamaha xt660x with white acerbis handguards with no metal and did a lot help when I smash the cars and stuff around in the city... anyway, have fun!
Great gear review! I know this video is a little older but I just got a pre-owned 2014 f800gs that came with a few upgrades and accessories. One of them being the AltRider crash bars which are good but I want something that covers higher like yours so thanks for leading me on to Wild at Heart. I so far I've only heard of TouraTech, AltRider and Wunderlich but I like the design and protection those ones offer and how comparable in price. That being said I'm thinking about getting the Remus headers for mine and I've been reading that there may be clearance issues with engine guards. Does anyone know if the Wild at Heart crash bars have issues with the Remus headers?

Nice Vid. I have same tires on my gsa. I don't like the chevron strip on the rear. The tire spins on that strip when attacking up hills strait on. Tree roots are a bitch here in the woods of new england. Great longevity tho. Guess I need another set of rims with full on knobbies. If only I were rich. Peace.
Hey Adam, First off, great info on the vid, just wondering about the chain maintenance and lifespan as I have only run shaft drive 1150/1200 GS'... Considering selling the 1150 for an 800.
Hey hank. The chain maintenance isn't as much of a burden as you might think. Depending on your climate and surface conditions and off road frequency, you'll need to service it at different intervals. When I say service I mean soaking it in cleaner, wiping it with a rag and relubricating it. As far as longevity, I'm on my second chain at the 30,000 mark. I killed my last chain in new Mexico with a lot of mud so that interval may have been higher before I had to replace it
Adam, I've got a BMW 800gs as well. Looking at buying the Acerbis handguards as you mention. However, a friend has some clearance issues with the levers on his KLR. Does your wife's bike have any issues with the Acerbis handguards and clearance with the levers?Great video. Thumbs up.
Great vid Adam. Just bought a '15 800GS. Just been writing down all the details in this vid. Agree with you on the pannier cost. How thick is the sheet metal you used? Was thinking about using sheet alloy with solid rivets (aviation style) but TIG welding is harder. Have you had any problems with corrosion on the panniers?
I paid particular attention while painting them as I knew this was my only form of protection from rust since I used cold roll steel. Also when I head out, I water proof my stuff with thick trash bags which may help the inside from rusting. But overall the answer is no, I haven't had rusting issues because I'm cognizant of it. And I forgot what thickness metal I used, but it's very thin, maybe 5/32?

Thanks Adam I'm buying an F800 next week and am collecting info. Did you consider the F800GSA? Too expensive? And did you not find the stock seat too hard? That's the other common complaint by reviewers.
Yes I think the stock seat is too hard and the comfort seat is absolutely worth it. The GSA has one huge advantage that over the stock model which is the larger gas tank. All of the other upgrades are simple enough to add yourself. It really just depends weather you want to pick all of your own stuff or just buy it ready to go right out of the box. The only real consideration is the gas tank. While larger is nicer, I've never wished that I had the standard 4 gallon one. If I need more fuel I just add my rotopax to solve that problem!

arkansaswookie I ve ridden the colorado CDR and a good portion portion of the AZBDR. The AZBDR is tough with big bikes. The smaller the better for this one (at least the portion I've ridden) Thanks man!!
arkansaswookie Totally doable. There are a few sections of deep sand that goes for a while and there are a few technical rocky inclines and declines that having a an f800 causes you to have to move slower and be more thoughtful. I think one of the touratech guys did it on a 1200 even.

Didn't take it off voluntarily... One of my front calipers fell off on a freeway and the fender shattered away as a result of it bouncing off a few spokes.
+Sancez - The tire is called a "Heidenau K60 Scout" and for a Front Tire on an F800GS they are hard to beat. Adam says on here that he also uses Heidenau on the rear too. I tried them but have since found that the "Dunlop D606" on the rear seems a lot better. It gives good grip on the road, good wear, and good off-road traction. Basically all round performance is good ...not fantastic, but good, especially for the price.
+Jennifer Merchant - I spotted that too Jen. And I too thought the same thing. I was wondering weather or not to remove mine too, but having just seen those brake lines dangling out the back like that, I now think not. Plus I've had zero trouble with it there for the past 2 years (25,000k's) so it can stay.
+thelifeof brian haha thanks. I've had the brake lines free like that for 15000 miles and never thought twice about them. The only thing I did to them was wrap duct tape around them to fatten them up so they wouldn't get caught in the tread of my tire. Otherwise they've been fine. One drawback to missing the front fender is wet weather riding! Water seems to shoot up through the instrument cluster and get all over your frontside!

Yes. The wild@heart crash bars will work on the 2014 F800GS. They will not work on the 800GSA though due to a different fairing shape.

Didn't change any cables. There is enough slack for the risers to be put on.
