- Kate Rusby is an English folk singer and songwriter from Penistone, South Yorkshire. Sometimes known as The Barnsley Nightingale, she has headlined various British national folk festivals, and is regarded as one of the most famous English folk singers of contemporary times. In 2001 The Guardian described her as "a superstar of the British acoustic scene. In 2007 the BBC website described her as "The first lady of young folkies". She is one of the few folk singers to have been nominated for the Mercury Prize.
Rusby was born into a family of musicians in 1973 in Sheffield, England. After learning to play the guitar, the fiddle, and the piano, as well as to sing, she played in many local folk festivals as a child and adolescent, before joining (and becoming the lead vocalist of) the all-female Celtic folk band The Poozies. Her break-through album came in 1995. A collaboration with her friend and fellow Barnsley folk singer Kathryn Roberts was simply titled Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts. In 1997, with the help of her family, she recorded and released her first solo album, Hourglass. Since then she has gone on to receive acclaim in her home country and abroad, and her family continues to help her with all aspects of her professional career.
Rusby was also a member of the folk group Equation, later to be replaced by Cara Dillon. The early line-up also featured Rusby's erstwhile performing partner Kathryn Roberts and Mercury-nominated artist Seth Lakeman. Their demo CD, In Session, had a small commercial release.
The previously unreleased song "Wandering Soul" was Rusby's contribution to the soundtrack for Billy Connolly's World Tour of New Zealand, an eight-part BBC television documentary series originally broadcast in November 2004.
Rusby at the Larmer Tree Festival 2008
A collaboration with Ronan Keating saw Rusby riding high in the UK Singles Chart; their duet "All Over Again" peaked at 6 in June 2006. She also made a vocal contribution to the successful debut solo album of Roddy Woomble, the lead singer of Idlewild. In the same year her cover of The Kinks' "The Village Green Preservation Society" was used as the theme tune to the BBC One television sitcom Jam & Jerusalem. Rusby has written several new songs for the latest series of Jam & Jerusalem, and is credited as responsible for the show's music.
Launched at the 2007 Cambridge Folk Festival, the album Awkward Annie was released on 3 September 2007. "The Village Green Preservation Society" is included as a bonus track.
2008 saw the release of Sweet Bells, an album of traditional Christmas songs interpreted by Rusby. - Hudba
In a career of shining gems, this stands to me as the finest thing Rusby has yet done. The combination of the piano (not a typical folk instrument) and the staggeringly beautiful arrangement - combined, of course, with her lovely voice - just adds up to an utterly stunning, almost religious experience. Simply breathtaking.
Katie's voice simply makes all other competitors look and sound second division. She gets right under your skin in a way that elucidates the strongest of emotions. Absolutely wonderful artist. Does her county and country proud.
There are many excellent singers in the world but there are few who can touch your heart like Kate Rusby. What a beautiful interpretation of the song this is. Wonderful arrangement & a voice of such purity it takes your breath away. It made me cry.
Kate voice is extraordinary, a blessed voice, makes me want to hear the music again and again.
Such a special voice and delivery, that it makes me pay attention to the words, and the music too-it is just so soothing to listen to if you have the volume adjusted.
Your in for a treat every time i see her she just gets better and better

This would be my "desert island" music. All of Kate's recordings. Plus, a 45-year old bottle of Scotch.
What a beautiful song. I'm sure this is the same tune as Farewell farewell by Fairport Convention, aka Willie o' Winsbury. A great song.
Yep
Tune is Fause Foodrage
very nice
belle musique
Thanks for the comment glad you liked the video. Hope the Gig on friday night is good she is excellent live
Thanks Jenir123 you are brilliant, I hope Sandy Denny was involved in the Fairport song her voice had the same energy as Kate Rusby she was a great singer.
I will check out willie o winsbury as you suggest. It is a great song and the words suggest it is quite an old song and Kate s good at looking for new ideas from old music books but I think Fairport got there first,
Kate will not steel a song, she always acknowledges the writer when she can .
Thanks jenir123
My fave too, i am hoping to get some more footage of them when they come to Exeter in a couple of weeks. Also got a couple more videos from Abbotsbury, haven't decided whether to put them up yet as i didn't have a tripod and they're a little jittery.
@kmacku
Thanks glad you like it kate is a very talented yorkshire lass listen to more of her songs and you will be in for a treat.
pretty dresses, She isn't just a great singer, but also a beautiful woman. And she does not sing really loud or with a long range of tones, like some singers do.
Great singer, - I have her album "HOURGLASS" -- For anyone interested CONNIE DOVER also does a great version of "Willie of Winsbury" on her album "The Wishing Well"
@306bad According to wikipedia Farewell farewell is an original composition written by Richard Thompson.
@jenir123
You are spot on with you link to Fairport Convention. I am interested because I was trying to find the origin of this song. Kate included this song on her brilliant album "Awkward Annie", As a fan I know she puts old songs to music and she is brilliant at doing that and she marked "John Barbury" on the album as Traditional, arranged by Kate Rusby so where did Fairport find it ? The search goes on.
One woman should have more plays.
yes i've been on there for years, think i'm jenir123, i'm not very active on there though although i can't for the life of me think why not. I've known the guys for a frightening 35 years now!!!
Beautiful song lyric please
still put them up they will be good to see
Don't no if your on the Longdogs forum if so I'm on and go under the name of BLIND FIDDLER
I'm all confused now.
Where's Willie?
Also known as Willie O'Winnsbury, eh?
And sung to perfection by Sandy Denny. I love Kate's singing but for me Sandy's is my "go to" version.
get 'a way, ya kidding ?....... on yer way sherlock.
@@lynneceegee8726 Never knew she did it, or do you mean Farewell Farewell, which is based on the tune? Always get choked up when I listen to that. Pentangle's version of Willie O' Winsbury is also close to perfection..
Her voice sounds a bit Julie Fowlis.
