How and When to use Clindamycin? (Cleocin, Dalacin and Clinacin) - Doctor Explains

Generic name: Clindamycin.
Brand names: Dalacin, Cleocin and Clinacin.
Available as: powder for oral suspension, capsules and injections.
How to use it?
Swallow the capsule whole with half a glass of water. Don’t break it or chew on it.
If you are using the suspension, than resolve the powder in half a glass of water and drink it.
Take it after or while eating some food. Also make sure to take it on fixed times. This lowers your chances on missing a dose.
Duration of treatment?
Usually 5 to 14 days, but it can be up to several months.
It is important that you do not interrupt the treatment and finish it completely.
When to use it?
Clindamycine is used for ”serious” infections caused by micro-organisms sensitive to clindamycin.
What is the correct dosage?
Always use the dosage and frequency prescribed by your own doctor.
General guideline for adults using capsules or oral suspensions: 150 mg every 6 hours.
In severe infections this can be increased to max. 600 mg every 8 hours.
Forgotten a dose?
Does it take less than 4 hours till your next dose? Than skip the dose you missed and take the forgotten dose at the end of your treatment.
What are the side-effects?
Very common (more than 10%): nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
Common (1-10%): inflammation of the mouth, esophagus or intestines, stomach pain, and a rash.
Safety:
You can combine clindamycin with any type of food and even with alcohol. However it can have some interactions with other drugs. Therefore always ask your prescribing doctor if clindamycine is safe for you to use.
It is also important you don’t use clindamycin if you are hypersensitive to lincomycins.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
It is “probably safe”. However, rarely it can have some negative consequences.
So discuss with your prescribing doctor is it is strictly necessary to use clindamycin and if there are better/safe options.

Hello Doctor, thank you for this video. I have bacterial skin under my right arm. my doctor prescribed me to use an Antiseptic solution since more than one month but no improvement. Would you please let me know if it is advised to use Clindamycin. I have a swelling in my armpit and some thing feel like a ball, sometimes it becomes soft sometimes hard. I used the Duac topical gel when I was in college with tazorac (2007) My skin cleared up so much! Duac is said to be discontinued. There’s generics but wondered about cost of capsules vs generic gels of clindamycin now since goodrx is giving price quotes. I haven’t worked in a year since layoff. So cost of one-time doctor visit and Rx prices have me wondering what suits my wallet best.

Hi Doc, my Doctor at my clinic prescribed 300 mg Clindamycin (Dalacin ) capsules for a lower leg infection they gave me the treatment for 1 capsule every six hours for 8 days, I have been to have my dressing changed the infection is a little better but not cleared up completely.
I was given 2 packets containing 28 tablets in each packet the Doctor told me to take them for 8 days… I have 16 tablets left should I just continue taking them or should I wait to see what my Doctor says regarding the infection, I really don’t want the infection to reoccur as it has been very painful?

I hope you will recover soon. To answer your question 15 days can be quite a normal duration of treatment for clindamycin, but if you worry about it or have any additional questions than always contact your own doctor.

Usually it is considered safe to use topical clindamycin cream for pregnant women. However, I would always advice you to contact your own doctor and discuss this with him/her.
I got to used to apply the clindamycin since before i am not pregnant to cure my pimple and it is really effective medicine to me and now i am on 2nd trimester and my pimple came back so i use it. Usually it is adviced to first clean your face with lukewarm water (without soap). Afterwards apply the medicine thinly to the pimples and to the places where you often suffer from blackheads, pimples and pustules.

I never used clindamycin myself, but it can cause irritation of your skin. You could visit your GP and ask them is clindamycin is suitable for you.

Most likely best after eating breakfast and dinner.
Guys, if you’re on antibiotics, just divide 24 hrs by the number of pills you need to take. So if it’s twice a day, then 24/2=12. You take a pill every 12 hours. If it’s thrice, then 24/3=8. Antibiotics need a steady level to kill bacteria

You can put the medicine over yo moisturizer you’re using a moisturizer the correct way on damp skin after washing it Acts as a buffer just be sure it’s completely absorbed before moving to the medicine

Ask your prescribing doctor, you can call them and ask for free. Also, whatever pharmacy you have I’m pretty sure has to give you advice. They also gave you a large pamphlet about instructions. If that doesn’t answer your question call the pharmacy you pick up from and tell them to give you details about the drug and your situation. If they can’t, call your doctor you may need another appt

You should contact your prescribing physician and ask them this question. Usually acne/pimples are first treated with different medication with less side effects.
