  • Building a settlement can be a challenge, but all the different types of doors, and their little quirks can make it difficult to even get your foot in the....door...
    So today we're gonna show you everything you need to know about doors.

    I really appreciate the high quality vids you are making. You have a professional voice, very clear, and instructive with good details. I just built my first Barn and used the large double barn doors, but damned if I could get the two doors inline. One always had to be slightly back from the frame, leaving a gap, otherwise they wouldn't snapped. I used the two frames in the barn section too. It kind of just makes it look like a worn down barn, so not a huge deal, but things like that always seem to crop up when building. I'm watching all of your vids for inspiration on builds. Thanks

    The Spectacle Island is the best settlement to build on in this game. I usually build my house in the center (near the workshop) purely from concrete with a staircase inside, elevator going up to the 4 floor, with a lot of windows for the view, and a lot of decorations depending on my run. For the armory I always put it near that tower that you can see at 0:52 (it is also from concrete, and it looks like bunker)). I usually put the workshops on the first floor, Power Armor stations on the second one (they are around 8-10 of them in total), and the third floor is as a storage for the weapons with the legendary effects that are useless for me (they usually end up in a hands of my settlers for defence). In both of those buildings I use the doors that you can see at 1:48, so the raiders won't kill me so easily.
    I usually build the settlers biulding on the outskirts of the Spectacle Island depending if I want to be creative or not. For creative route I use a lot of small houses 2 width, and 6 length were there is room for 2 people (I usually put at least 10-12 of them in this settlement). For the lazy route I just build one giant tower opposite to this tower that you can see at 0:52 in this video, were I just place a 24 beds of entire settlement population.
    One of the main reasons why I put the settlers biulding on the outskirts is due to a lot of crop porduction that I use creating adhesive from Vegetable Starch. For this you need Corn (3), Mutfruit (3), Tato (3) and Purified water (1). The water, and the land to plant crops is not a problem, but getting the right amount of settlers as farmers can be really challenging here (I need to start Automatron dlc, or wait a long time for new settlers to arrive in this settlement). But no matter what I am always ending up missing adhesive, due to settlers loving to eat Tato (I swear even if I plant other crops this one always disappears as the first one, so I have to plan a lot of extras), and doing a lot of upgrades for my weapons/power armor.
    For the defence I do put a lot of heavy machine turrets, that are later upgraded to the heavy laser turrets (sometimes I place also 1-2 Missile turret ) on Shack bridges, but this is only the secondary defence system. Now the second main reason why settlers building are on the outskirts, and for primary defence system I use mainly around 25-30 random leveled Deathclaws in this settlement (those guys are really big so they would stuck in buildings if I would place settlers building in the center of the Spectacle Island). I realise that this can take a long time to catch so many deathclaws for defence purposes, but they are far better then any turret. 5 Mythic deathclaw can practically kill any raiding party that decides to spawn in this settlement, and with 25-30 it's probably one of the most safest locations in this game. Still the view of the sea, and freely walking Deathclaws is beautiful. However there is a chance of a bug were the game decides not to load the electricity powering the beta wave emitter so your defence for could turn against you (I don't have to explain what will happen in this scenario, the same thing will hapen if you want to raid it with Nuka World Raiders). So just in case you will have to build at least 3-4 beta wave emitters power up by individuals power generators.
    This is the best settlement for the One Settlement playthrough if you don't plan to side with Minutmen, or the Nuka World Raiders.
    Ps. Sorry for going little overboard with my comment but this is really fantastic location.

    Loving this video and looking forward to future tips. I've struggled with doors quite a bit and never realised the hinge trick. For the power doors, do you ever use the wireless power glitch? I've found that super helpful and reduces the number of conduits on view.

    • @Theegreygaming
      @Theegreygaming  Před rokem +5

      not really, I'm usually too impatient to take the time to stage and replace everything and ever since I've started this channel, I've decided to focus on builds or styles that appeal to beginners that don't yet have that skillset, or don't want to resort to glitches. more advances stuff like rug glitches, pillar glitches, and wifi-power are all things I tend to shy away from. there are also better channels out there that already cover those glitches in pretty heavy detail, skooled zone especially is one I recommend if you're looking for that stuff.

    On conduits ... there are some vertical ones of which 2 have a power connector in the middle. These can clip thru the walls and let you bring electricity through ... this also can work for between floors

    Nice tutorial! I wish I had seen this back in 2015. I just started to utilize the hinges a couple of months ago as before I didn't really care very much about which way the door opened. I recently came up with an overly-complicated way to use the conduits and switches to create opening switches on both sides of the powered concrete door so I can lock myself in and others out of my living quarters. I also avoid the settlers spawning in my storage area by creating it on a second floor to which only I have access.

    If you have the Nuka Cafe CC, you can put those wall connectors on Nuka Clocks (wall decorations) and move them anywhere you want, even if the wire clips through a wall. Even works on pre-existing walls like Sanctuary houses or Taffington Boathouse

    • @msiff
      @msiff Před 8 měsíci

      I ususally hput the clocks on directly opposite sides of the wall after I wire the two connectors so I don't see the wire clipping.
      Basically a conduit, but more flexible. Only downside is the area-of-effect that powers nearby lights.

    Very informative. I didn't know about the hinge visibility. You can use logic gates to make powered doors operate from both sides, meaning you can open it from the outside and then close it from the inside.

    • @thomaswedge42
      @thomaswedge42 Před rokem +2

      All it takes is a single XOR logic gate with two switches, when both switches are On or both are Off then the door will be closed however when one is Off and the other is On then the door will be open.

    • @eldeefifty4526
      @eldeefifty4526 Před rokem +1

      @@thomaswedge42 yep, that's how I do it. And I use the wiring glitch to get the wires through walls to keep everything neat.

  • @Acirno
    @Acirno Před 10 měsíci

    you can set up a dual switch for any of the powered doors using a Xor gate. This way you have a switch inside and out, and it doesn't mater wich switch you use, powered on or off, it will still open and close the door.

    There's a simpler way to get a cleaner look with hidden wires rather than using conduits, the famous "wire glitch", you get hidden wires and it makes it easier to have a two-way powered door.

    I see all of your buildings use a lot of concrete ,but concrete is not cheap and not easy to find compare to steel/wood. Any tips to get those easily?

    • @Theegreygaming
      @Theegreygaming  Před rokem

      concrete is pretty hard to find, with some notable locations being a shed between somerville place an vault 95, and vault 114 also has a lot of concrete as well. but the best way is to purchase shipments of concrete from junk vendors throughout the game. Trader Rylee when assigned to a level 3 store will carry tons of it and she gets new shipments every few in-game days. that's my usual go-to- spot.

    • @bacd-nn2lg
      @bacd-nn2lg Před rokem

      Just buy them form stores in the major cities, or you can get it the local trading stand if you have decided to build it in the settlement. They usually have around the stacks of 200-350 shipments, and it don't cost too much.

  • @themagnus2919

    My settlers keep stealing my weapons and ammo. Keep all your valuables behind a locked door.

    • @bacd-nn2lg
      @bacd-nn2lg Před rokem

      They will also steal you Power Armor if you leave a fusion core in them. So always carry ammo/fusion cores with you, and put your nose valuable gun in the Home Plate locations.
      In settlements just store weapons with some useless random legendary effects, like a Gamma Gun with Ghoul Slayer.

    • @geminix5845
      @geminix5845 Před rokem

      Another way I found is if you place your items on a 2nd level, and then build stairs that are just out of reach of that floor the NPC's can't walk over it, but you can. The way to test if you have the stairs far enough away is to take a companion and tell them to Go to the second floor until they say they can't reach it.

  • @KatrinaLeFaye

    how do you open and close that door from either side of the door though.

    • @Theegreygaming
      @Theegreygaming  Před rokem +1

      I usually don't, I usually place the fast travel marker to inside the locked room, and if I do get locked out, I just open the workshop, select the door, move it out of the way and cancel to snap it where it belongs after I get back in. other commenters have stated they use the either/or logic gate and place a switch on either side but I've yet to play with that option.

    • @Theegreygaming
      @Theegreygaming  Před 4 měsíci

      I'm not sure what you mean by "not working right". is it not working at all, or are they stuck in permanently open? if they won't open at all, that usually means that the power hasn't been run all the way to your door and there's a cable missing somewhere, I've had that happen it's an easy thing to miss. it they're stuck open and can't be closed with switches, it usually means you've somehow bypassed the switch and are providing uninterrupted power to the door, only way to make that work is to make sure your power switch is connected to your main line and then to the door, not the other way around, that's also an easy mistake to make. otherwise I'm sort of out of ideas. I don't play on PS and don't have a lot of experience with those platform specific bugs.
