    Maybe FYI, I tried the other brand 2k clear in a rattle can, ruined two of my projects, they looked really beautiful, after 24 hours I wet sanded the fish eye out and then buffed. High gloss shine, the next day I started to see lines in the whole project thru out. So I sanded smooth. When more clear coat came I pulled the project out to clear coat, and all the lines, (really more like cracks) were worse and were raised and the surface was rough. I believe it reacted with either or both primers I used. I was using primers in a rattle can from the auto store. I am on my third project, used a different primer, so far so good.

      About 45 years ago I ran the sheet metal shop for DOD, 5th Army Forward Area Maintenance and the chemist from DuPont stopped by with this new paint called Imron urethane ... Since we spray painted everything on the planet, he suggested it for the Nike missiles (Didn't use it) ... he explained that then paint was oil base automotive paint and a special hardener... Back then I did a lot of airbrush work and pin stripping on bikes, so I took some one shot and added about 10-20 percent of Imron Hardener. I had base coated a Sportster with black Imron (Free samples)... pin stripped it with a yellow/hardener mix. Let dry for 24 hours and then clear coated with Imron clear...magic... no cracks or wrinkles for 3 years when I sold it. I also tried using the same mix with Yellow Occur One shot as sizing for gold leaf name on a tank, plus one wood boat sign... I spread some of the same mix on some scrap painted metal and kept touching it till I got a clean"Snap" sound. Then I applied the leaf ... worked perfect, no cracks or wrinkles. This was on a show Dodge Van and it worked like a charm. I've never tried gold leaf size in such a mix... you might like to try it. I do mostly reverse glass work these days and floating painted images, like the old depression period Pub signs here in Australia, where I retired... You can check out the "Happy Guilder" in England as he does great work and good step by steps on you tube. Go for it ... also I feel that primers are not your problem. Also you need a spray booth as you can't buff Imron!

    Awesome work buddy . How do you protect the gold leaf after finishing So that you can spray other parts of the tank? Do you clear coat it so it can be taped over?

    hey there thanks for the video! - i have a couple questions for you-- do you find the size tach time sweet spot is different when doing the turns on composite gold, verse 24k ---etc or verse copper, or silver ...? Also what grit is on that turn tool you are using? Any suggestions i just keep burning through seemingly no matter what i do. Also what is the paint type you are adding in is that 1 shot? or acrylic ? or ???? Are you thinning the dux with turp or anything? thanks again for the help

    • @elroypinstriping8022
      @elroypinstriping8022  Před 2 lety +2

      I do not use real gold so I am not sure. Hot rod Jen covers that real well in her videos. But the timing is similar with other imitation leaf, copper, silver, rose gold etc.. i use 3000 or 5000 grit Trizact. If you are burning thru then your size isn't set properly, or too thick or you are pressing to hard or wrong material. 1 shot to add tint. Any enamel will work. And I do not thin my size.
      It will take a while to get solid results. It's all about timing. Watch Jens videos. She shows a cool process to learn the timing

    Did you say "wait 50-55 minutes before laying the leaf"? Isn't that a bit too long since most suggest 20-30 minutes at average room temperature (~70 degrees)?

    • @elroypinstriping8022
      @elroypinstriping8022  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes. I typically set my timer at 1hr, give or take, 70 degrees.. That's with DUX size quick size.. 1shot, LUCO, or other size maybe sooner or even longer. Just depends. Best thing to do is lay out some tape lines like I did in the beginning. Lay 4-5 lines of size. Set a timer at 30, 45, 60, 80 minutes laying the leaf at each interval and see what results you get... With real gold you can wait even longer at times. Some leaf sticks better than others

    • @elroypinstriping8022
      @elroypinstriping8022  Před 3 lety

      I use a screw in the top and never open the can. I buy smaller cans 8oz. I usually run out in less then a year. If it gets "seeds" or grainy I toss it and start a new can.

    I have a problem with clear. Do you clear it after 24 hours so the actual leaf can dry? Or can you clear it right away because of the hardener in the clear. I imagine without hardener clearing it with normal size would take 24 hours before clear. Never seen your vids before. Awesome vid!

    • @elroypinstriping8022
      @elroypinstriping8022  Před rokem

      Thank-you.
      You can wait but I have never had a problem clearing right away. And i dont add hardener to my size. Would make the timing unpredictable in my opinion.
