  • Cover of a song that plays in first stage of the SNES and GBA game Megaman & Bass (Rockman & Forte), made in DefleMask. Uploaded during my days as JetStar1997, this video has since become my most watched video on my channel, having over 30k views. What originally lead to me covering this song was a MIDI cover by KingMeteorStudios I heard in 2014 that follows the audio limitations of the YM2612 and Sega PSG chips (though his cover is inaccurate as he had panned the PSG channels, whereas the actual Genesis hardware doesn't allow this to happen on these channels). This cover uses the drum samples from the original song, and uses the FM patches that came with DefleMask since it was made before I understood FM synthesis and how it works.

    Alternating the lead between FM and squares makes this really fresh sounding. It's a composition technique I wish was more commonly used in actual Mega Drive games, though the duet & call-response nature of this particular song makes it especially impactful. Fantastic work with the harmonies, which also take advantage of the different timbres of FM and square waves.

    The genesis is so underestimated when it comes to its sound chip. I personally think it is better than the SNES chip and that PSG from the MasterSystem really tops it off. Nice work!

    • @SuperJet_Spade
      @SuperJet_Spade  Před 6 lety +25

      Heh, thanks. It does take a good composer to not make something sound like flatulence and noise when it comes to the YM2612 (and any other FM) chip. I do find the YM2612's FM capabilities to be more interesting than the sample-based S-SMP of the SNES, even though I consider both to be unique in their own way.

    • @noobguy57
      @noobguy57 Před 6 lety +12

      Wavetable Guy yeah I have tried to make things for the genesis but I haven't succeeded. I agree with the uniqueness and they can both be used in different ways.

    There's ways to get full 6 note chords in only 3 channels. If you know how to do that it makes your stuff sound so much more full without using up all the channels. It would make this sound even better than it already does.

    • @SuperJet_Spade
      @SuperJet_Spade  Před 5 lety +2

      Ah yes, a polychord. I pretty much know how to do that now, but back in 2017 (when I made this cover), I didn't understand how FM synthesis worked, so I just used the existing patches that came with Deflemask here.

      That's the interesting thing about FM synthesis, especially when it comes to not only the YM2612 in the Sega Genesis, but other chips in the family such as the YM2203, YM2608, etc. What you hear may not be what you'd expect in an oscilloscope view.

      @@SuperJet_Spade No I mean that all of the waveforms look like they're several octaves higher than they actually are. It's like the oscilloscope didn't scale the waves properly or something.

      Ah yeah. In 2017, when I made this, SidWiz2 by RushJet1 had only existed for making oscilloscope views, and I believe I never figured out how to scale the waves in it so you can see the details more clearly.
