  • While the rain limited our first day in Belgrade, we made up for it by having one extremely busy day immersing ourselves in Serbian culture and learning about the complicated history this city holds.

Did you know why Western Christian churches ring bells at noon?
In 1456, the city belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary under the name Nándorfehérvár. It was the most important defense point of the southern central border.
By this time, he had already successfully fended off an Ottoman attack.
However, Sultan Mehmet II did not give up and attacked the fortress.
The Kingdom of Hungary was also prepared, and sent its best general János Hunyadi there. He was already known for his abilities. The Pope also sent help. A monk and something else. We will return to this.
The fortress had to be relieved from the outside and supported via the Danube river.
But the Turkish troops blocked the way. However, the Hungarian warship men's (among whom there were many Serbs) broke through and destroyed the Turkish ships. Thus, food, gunpowder and rested soldiers reached the fortress.
The monk successfully gathered about 15,000 insurgents. But their fighting value was weak...
In the end, the Turkish attack was successfully repelled, but János Hunyadi died in the outbreak of the plague. His son is the most popular Hungarian ruler Mátyás.
In the meantime, the other papal help reached the Europe of the time, too.
"Pray and ring the bell at noon for Christian victory"
Then the Pope amended: "This is how you give thanks for the Christian victory."
This victory was a huge thing, as it was achieved against the superpower of the time

Lovely tour, thank you. One small detail though - Serbia is not in Eastern Europe, it' in West Balkans. Never was part of Eastern Europe geographically or geopolitically. It is Slavic (predominantly) and Christian Orthodox (predominantly) country, but Eastern block was never part of it's history.

Yes you are correct! We learned that it is considered part of central Europe. I guess it was never something I was taught prior to this adventure, and my brain kept reverting back to that classification for a while until I could re-wire it. 😂
