    Coxless fours has to be the athletic definition of agony. Big respect to these monsters of fitness.

      No, the athletic definition of agony is single sculls.

    Why do some teams mount their riggers where they offset and some mount them where 1&4 seats are on the same side and 2&3 seats are on the other? Does it change anything?

    • @derp4234
      @derp4234 Před 6 lety +4

      its the exact same thing. Some coaches decide probably that seat 2 follows seat 3 better when their are closer to each other and they do it to only seat 2 and 3 bcause they are the "powerful" part of the boat

    • @deangeldhof532
      @deangeldhof532 Před 6 lety +7

      It's either to balance the power on both sides, as one side may be stronger than the other or it could be to help with rhythm in the boat as this is very important for effective speed

      This is so the centre of force is the same on both sides, or else the boat might “wriggle” from side-to side in a race, getting it a slower time. In an eight, this doesn’t matter as much, because it a a large boat, but in a (coxless) four, it can affect things a little. However, you might not do this if the four selected have an imbalance of power anyway. (Eg if Strokeside is more powerful than Bowside) and also if you want to commit your strongest two into the middle of the boat where they’re most effective.

      The power is better balanced for steering a straight course. In the 2016 M 8+ final, britain has that rig, and steers dead straight down the course. The Germans were rowing on a slight angle on the course, so their steering corrected but added drag. With the same oar configuration, a tighter race.

      @dmwhoyt21x Před 6 lety +1

      In overhead views of the race, the Germans, who placed 2nd, have there boat tracking at a slight angle, not dead straight down their lane. Classic steering issue to offset port/starboard imbalance.

    Bow and three of the New Zealand four are not quite in sync at the catch. Side views show this quite clearly. A shame. It likely cost them a higher medal.

    • @dmwhoyt21x

      Rock Earle Actually, no. High speed film has shown me in sync with stroke even when others are all out of the water. Some of us pay attention, and know the critical value of perfect timing. Others jusyt think blast through it, timing does not matter.
      Also, stern check is an anachronism, that is also not part of my stroke.
