Shame this isn't a bigger sport because it has everything- incredible fitness, excitement, strategy, and the competitors give their all but are both humble in victory and defeat
It's usually pretty boring to watch lmao
@@lucedoke975 lmao
@@lucedoke975 Dude this was fascinating.
Im on a rowing team mysekf, and yeah, its sad knowing that this isnt such a big sport
I think thatâs every sport
What great sportmanship by Damir Martin. If I was in his shoes I would be so pissed but he took it with the utmost respect towards Mahe. A great person everyone should aspire to be like :)
True!
I talked to Damir about the medal, he said that he was happy because he gave his best and that he would feel the same if he won any other medal. He also said Mahe deserved it because he has 10 years of experience more than him.
I love Drysdale but Damir Martin really embodies the Olympic spirit! What a rower and what a sportsman! I really hope he gets it next time!
i dont want to be pessimistic but i dont think that he is going to win.
@@Leloni535 why not?

he's a class act, and so are all the other Croatian athletes!

Much better commentary than the London races. Also, anyone else agree that Drysdale has THE coolest looking boat ever?
The kiwis know how to pull off a uniform
T. Purkess yes we do
What boat does he row?
@@AdityaMoudgal had an empacher 1x in London and then a custom Filippi 1x from 2016 onwards that he still uses.
@@callumbland7798 thanks for the reply. I saw Filippi had uploaded a video of the boat he rows.
I love how specifically these three scullers have had a healthy rivalry for ages in the world's and the Olympics and how they're all such great friends.
Best single sculls race of all time!
Should both won the gold medal. What a race!!
my body hurt just watching them through the 1500m. who's did too?
it's the amount of pain that you need to be prepared for with hard training, it's insane.
I was 2000 meters
@@Simon-xi8tb true
have you ever rowed before? If you have, that's not the sort of thing rowers usually say.
Lucas Orlebeke itâs because I have rowed before that I could relate to the pain crossing the 1500 taking it home to the 2000
probably the greatest single sculls race of all time!!!! Damir passed mahe in the end but mahe threw in a VERY fast hand away propelling the boat just fast enough for him to beat martin.
mroriona2 I like your CZcams channel logo, Doctor Who, my channel is dedicated to the music from the TV show, thought u may be interested.
who won the new zealander or the croation
the new zealander
After this race, Steve Redgrave said that Damir would have won if he'd just paused before the line and let the boat surge forwards. Literally that catch of the last stroke slowed the boat just enough for Mahe to sneak his bowball (and no more) ahead on the line
Shadowwolf TD5000 though steven is the most succesful rower of all time and his name will be honoured for many years to come, he wasn't what you'd call a "technician". He relied on pure strength in every one of his races so i'd say he isn't the best man to talk to when you wanna talk technique
I just used a rowing machine for the first time at the gym yesterday, and it was so fun, and gives me mad respect to what these guys do!
They deserve the gold medal đłđżđđ·
trust me this is definitely one of the hardest sport, it's even hard to rowing 500 meters
Fantastic race combined with some amazing camera shots from Rio
watching Drysdale row is like going to church, both give you life omfg
Wow! Rio is beautiful!
Great sportsmanship, but both men should have been awarded the gold, even in slo-mo its a tie.
best race in any sport of whole olympics
No
What an amazing finish
Drysdale, what a legend! True warrior!!!
what a race !! but i would share the gold... and thanks that you guys also recorded the medal ceremony (missed that at london)
no
Tim?
The croatian deserved the victory. He was beaten by the pace: he was on the return and Drysdala was rowing on the finish line.
This should have been gold medal for both.
Viacheslav Ivanov ...Pertty Karppinenn ..Thomas Lange and Mahe Drysdale are the best scullers in the Olimpic games
Holy molly! Fantastic race
Waw mahe lo hizo excelente increible. Re peleado estubo
Should've shared gold. when you've got people holding the boats at the start there's no point using equipment thats that accurate at the finish. it makes no sense. Great race.
There is a reason they have the metal gates holding them in. In any regatta outside of worldcup/world champs and olympics it would most likely be a tie
Clogs are a requirement for Senior World's and Olympics so its just a case of holding the stern steady.
that was just kick ass
In swimming they race for 50m which is about 23 seconds and if the margin is less than 0.01 it's a tie..In rowing we race for 7 minutes and a margin of 0.003 is not considered a tie ..that's completely unfair they should have given 2 golds
Beautiful scenery â€
What a sport! What a race! Here after watching Indian rowers
Drysdale is SO good... So is Martin...
The absolute best
If Damir Martin hadn't looked across on his final stroke, it might have been different... Eyes in the boat!
Steve Redgrave was saying that if he'd let the boat run on the last stroke then he would have won
martin would've won only if drysdale didn't have such a quick recovery
I love ăit a photoïŒ it a photo finish ïŒă
what a race !!!!!!!
it's very important capitation of single scule and I will practice that sport and
Nothing against the Great Dyrsdale but Martin has also earned the gold for catching up with the great finis, he would have even got it if he wouldn't have taken the last row but just let it slide...
yessss what a race he has huge ballsssss
Nice City
What a great race
nossa nada mais lindo que essa visao do rio
They have the same time 6;41:43
They should off gave them both Gold, the same time Mahe had a longer horn in front... That's Why He won!!!
Seems like not only Roger Federer can be very successful at high age;) Really stunning from Mahe!
Incredible race but the original standings were correct. The Croatian won.
the NZL skull is just beautiful
I got interested on rowing and i dont know should i start it in a club but anyway if i cant i can be happy to watch it on olympics :)
You can try to check the Finnish Rowing Federation website to see if they have a list of clubs around the country. Good luck!

Just by watching this already made me exhausting đ
It's a shame that Synek was never really in the fight here. He just looked more lethargic than in the last few world championships.

Been waiting for this race as I was overseas. That line is misleading if you see the buoy lane markers.
If you are right about the buoy line and the finish line then these two guys should swap medals.
Good video! Haha, we are the ones who work hard on CZcams! I subscribed to your channel!
What is the name of the this boat. ?price how much...please anyone explain
6:41,34 for both? In swimming, it's a tie!
1. This is not fair, that they gave a gold medal only to Drysdale.
2. They did not even show us the photo finish. Although, I always like if Drysdale wins, it's really a shame broadcasting for an Olympic Games in 2016!
Schmitt GĂĄbor stop being a sore loser ... drysdall was just ahead where it counted !!!!
@@penguinman2569 Have a close look at the photo. Notice how its been photo shopped??? Look at how they stretched the number 4 in comparison to the 5.
The croat was robbed, pure and simple.
groovyme1234 this is what photofinish pictures always look like, they are shot like this (and strechted) so the difference can be seen more easily)

Rowing is timed down to a thousandth of a second but TV only displays up to a hundredth. It is what the athletes sign up to when they first start in the sport internationally.

Is there somewhere the video without the journalists commenting?
Any clue what rate was Damir stroking at the end?
40 strokes/minute....at least
44/45
I think even higher, like 46 spm or closer to the 50s

Itâs difficult for me to find information online, so I am going to ask here. What would be an average speed a single sculler could go? If the person is in shape but no high level athlete. On average how long does it take to pass 1 kilometer on a scull?
On average I would say it takes about 3:50 or 4min to do 1000m (if you only do 1km and push hard) As for the speed, we measure that in time/500m(known as pace) I think an olimpic athlete could go about 1:30min/500m, maybe faster, but only for a very short time (that would be 20km/h)
@@Santi-hh1tp Nice! Thank you. I'm actually trying to guage for long-distance trips. I'm in Belgrade and there's a large river here called the Danube. I want to try to learn to scull, then scull to a small via the river that's about 24 kilometers away. I'm wondering how long it would take me. Buy bike it's about an hour.
@@nikolasirovica3250 In that case, I would say about 2hrs. But I should say that the sculls are competition boats, and are designed to go as fast as possible, but are very unstable. If you want to start rowing long distances maybe try normal rowing boats (I think in English it's called sweep rowing) Sculls are also quite expensive, so I would recommend joining a rowing club.
@@Santi-hh1tp Thanks! Yeah I guess ideally i'd like to find something that goes fast and long-distance, but maybe that doesn't exist. I'm new to rowing, generally i cycle. A row boat would be great, but they seem to go super slow and then it's not as exciting :D
@@nikolasirovica3250 Yeah I totally understand! Though rowing boats aren't as slow as they seem, specially fiber ones. If what you want is to row as exercise, a rowing boat is still a very good choice. But if you can afford a scull, its most definitely worth it. If the river is not too wavy you could use a scull with no problem. (They are usually used in lakes or closed canals with still water). I hope I've been helpful. Good luck!
Both deserved Gold
Both had a time of 6:41.34 which is a tie. So why did Drysdale win the gold and Martin 2nd place?
In 8:42 the Croatian actually gets to the line first this was a corrupt win
@@no-gracias9863 It was not corrupt. It was "strictly" in accordance with the regulations, because it is who cuts the line first, and by the thickness of a fingernail, they detected that Drysdale had "won", by a photograph of that moment when both bows cut through the plane. Hugely magnified, hugely accurate.
Your sentiment is correct though. In the last stroke, Martin's body (85% of the all-up mass of boat/sculls and athlete) was about 30cm ahead of Drysdale, but his boat was at a different part of the stroke cycle, the stroke's finish, where it is pushed back away from the race finish line.
Had he just fixed his position at the catch in that last stroke, ho would have been a clear Gold Medallist.
Rowing applies the rules with a almost obscene level of rigidity. Any athlete would surely say "both get Golds" - it has happened in athletics sprint races, where there is "interpretation" of the relative merits of an apparent dead heat..
Go go power Rowing
Wait⊠Damirâs bow definitely crossed the line first??
Why was it not a shared gold? They had the same time?
Because Mahe was faster 0.0000002 according to the blurry foto finish picture đđ Its a bullshit . Shouldv been 2 golds . Its a 2000 meters 7 minute race and they count 0.0000002 seconds and in swiming 50 meters they give gold for 0.1 seconds. Unreal bullshit and no sportmanship towards Martin. Poor guy
Rowing is timed down to a thousandth of a second but TV only displays up to a hundredth. It is what the athletes sign up to when they first start in the sport internationally.
Wow
It looked like the Croatian guy clearly won though...

Why not show the photo finish footage? How dumb.
lane 6 needs to work on that technique
I know nothing about this sport except that it looks brutally exhausting. I'm surprised at how "mature" Drysdale is... I would have thought a sport like this would favor men in their mid 20's to early 30's.
rowers peak in mid to late 30s. Takes a long time to build the aerobic base and anaerobic capacity. It aint figure skating.
