- For years, people have been debating how black people are represented in the media. When it comes to anime, black representation isn't the best, but what there is has given us many wonderful black characters. In this video I will list some of my favorite black characters in anime. Why do you need more precisely? It's not exactly aimed at those demographics so why does it need more?
@@BradLad56 Well I think the intended audiences for each anime/manga are probably based more on age and gender rather than ethnicity. People of all colors love anime. Plus it won't hurt anyone to feature more characters that minority groups can relate with, doesn't even have to be main characters, just some that are relevant.

@@BradLad56 Not what I'm saying at all, I'm sure a lot of anime fans favorite characters and relatable ones don't look like them. Just mentioning how anime/manga is lacking in skin tone variety, and that they should just sprinkle in a few more colored characters here and there. They're audience is FAR beyond just Japanese viewers/readers.
@@franksterjv They don't have to sprinkle in anything because there's nothing wrong with it lacking skin tone variety since it's primarily made for the Japanese,, not black people, not white people, not latinos etc. If they put other ethnicities in their works, that's up to them but don't expect it just because you want it dude. That's just arrogance.

What about Killer B, A, and Darui from Naruto. Mirko and Rock Lock from MHA. And Ogun Montgomery from Fire Force. Also I'm Happy seeing Good Black Characters in Anime. I wish we could also get to see Hispanic Characters in Anime too. I'm Hispanic BTW and the only cool Hispanic characters I seen in Anime are David Martinez from Cyberpunk: Edgerunner and Chad from Bleach

When talking about this topic, people tend to forget about a certain black protagonist in a 2003 short anime from the Matrix universe, who can run so fast until his leg muscles explodes while also beating his own RECORD. Afro Samurai came out in 2007.

Other day friend told me yoruichi isn’t black and it really made me think who in anime even is black and it’s making me realise we really don’t get a lot of representation ofc they’re japanese people and they don’t need to but now I’m gonna definitely try to support the mangaka that do research on our culture and give us character as cool as afro samurai

I’ve heard Shinichiro Watanabe has black characters in the anime he makes. Most of his series are original projects. It is intentional for him. Anime like Bebop, Michiko to Hatchin, and one of his more recents from 2019 is Carole & Tuesday. Afro Samurai as well. Black Lagoon has a lot of international characters so that one looks seems intentional as well.
I dont rlly mind animes not putting black characters in animes, but when they do and we're represented well i appreciate it so muchh🥲🥲💗 Another one of my favs that isnt mentioned here is carole from carole and tuesday

Over time, Japanese cartoons are getting better about their portrayal of not just Black characters, but also Chinese characters.
I'm half Japanese. If you're Japanese, Korean, or Chinese-American, you probably spent a lot of time cringing at how each of those nations portray people from the other two nations in popular media, and I really hated a lot of the "magic negro" stuff anime did with the portrayal of Chinese characters. Thankfully, in recent decades, anime has been getting better about the portrayal of Chinese characters as well as Black characters.

I remember watching tiger & bunny on Netflix there is a black character named Flame and when I look at that character he represents those that are part of the rainbow community you see all the characters that are masculine except for this one flame he is a feminine character he does not represent the average black man it's a shame that the character was represented as black and feminine like queer character dress in pink

@@JetTheProphether voice actor is Afro Latina. At the time they wanted a VA to represent her so consider that I guess. Besides that we must remember lots of Latinos identify as black or of the diaspora.

no point in arguing yoruichi isn't black like whats the point. She was born in a fictional place so technically she has no worldly ethnicity. Some people argue that we see a black woman in bleach with jackie that proves that yoruichi isn't but mila-rose is also black. Black people don't all got one set of facial features. And the names don't mean shit cause shunsui is supposed be italian or something no japanese person looks like that.
The only alternatives she could be are like iranian or egyptian you know middle eastern or south asian like indian and those are close enough to africa. A small part of egypt is even geographically considered to be in Africa its a transcontinental country. We'll never know for sure where in the world she would be from if she wasn't born in the afterlife so its a dumb point to argue. What kinda tan looks like that.
Anyway Chad's speech during the fullbring arc about having pride in his skin is kubo's graduation album for me. No matter how many black guys transform into bugs or pumpkins or chickens no way can he be racist after that one.
Am i the only one that noticed the big new series doing less and less with ethnic diversity? Demon slayer, chainsawman, AoT sorta, JJK. We used to have naruto, bleach, fullmetal alchemist. One piece did some bad stuff with race but still got guys like king. Why have they gotten worse? And like nobody is bringing this up. All the most popular shit nowadays has the usual white people pretending to be asian as the whole cast.
Afro was so cool can't believe they got samuel to voice him. Yasuke was such a let down following him up.

It depends on when you got into anime but I know who Zed is. I would have not even considered him but then I remembered what his mom looked like.

Afro Samurai it is the greatest anime of all time's I still believe they needs to be some progress what it's about representation because they're not always going to be inclusive when you go to see some black anime characters there are never always the main characters because I feel like sometimes black characters in anime there are only design just to please black people to feel this inclusion and then you don't see them in certain scenes in Japanese anime yes there are never the main characters by the way it's very rare
Anime in English it means cartoon so there isn't that difference between anime in Japan and including Western anime Western anime it's considered anime because it's doubtful cartoon
I think they should be a black anime Studio to represent black people that will be very cool if they do a black Anime Studio and a black platform that represents black people

So what are we considered as Black? More like afro American? I though from Indian to South Africa. A Person with a darker skin are considered as black
India had all the races known to humanity 😅
Like himalyan and north east indians are tibeto burmese 5 to 7% of india
Muslims and general hindu clans like brahmins rajputs look more middle eastern 25% to 40%
Dravidians and tribal population look black because they are austroasiatic or melanesian 40 to 50 %
And the you have many other small clans like parsis who came from persia.

Yoruichi (most mistaken for Black in anime history lol) is South Asian, tan.
The Pokemon girl (forgot name) is still an unknown currently, but most art suggests she's just tanned.
Michico is Latina, tan. BUT COULD be half and half like Miles Morales, but we don't have images of her both parents to confirm it.

Look up "South Asian Girl" "South Asian Girls" "South Asian Women" "South Asian Woman" "South Asian lady" "South Asian Ladies" Now Look up African or "Black Girls" "Black Girl" "Black Woman" "Black Women" "Black Lady" "Black Ladies" compare their average skin tones and then compare them to Yoruichis skin tone. correct answer on average, in general Yoruichi AND Nessa have the skin tones of that of a black woman (black doesnt mean literal black skin it usually means that chocolately kind of skin tone and up) Also don't try and argue no afro features either, majority of Japanese characters and European characters dont have the phenotypes of their respective races either they just look like anime they are in the anime style. The same can apply to a black or african character in anime. they dont need to have any black phenotypical features to be black and if that is the requirement for black people in anime, that is if only black people in anime must have their facial phenotypes depicted to be considered black instead of more obvious things like chocolate skin tone or maybe even curly hair then white and asian/japanese anime characters should display their races respective phenotypes as well. It's always strange when people have weird agendas when their agendas can be disproven easily.
