The engine builder and his tuner are badass. 1, for that engine to lay down the kind of power and not detonate and 2, his tuner to pull that kind of power and barely smoke. Thats knowing wtf you are doin. Thats not mentioning the trans and the rest of the driveline. Stunning. Hats off to all involved in that beast.
What big rig do you know of that isn't stick? Unless something changed in the last 10-20 years I'm pretty sure most are still manual transmission, if you could even make one that's automatic at all. I know basically nothing about vehicles anyway other than what I've learned replacing almost every part on my 02 civic(yes every necessary part except the actual engine itself, including head gaskets) and fixing other cars. So what do I know about trucks. Although for this sort of thing especially you'd want manual control, which he has because he wouldn't be able to torque it like that using auto.

I was taught in a Mech Eng course that the power limit a diesel engine is the JVS limit. This was 1993 and JVS meant Just Visible Smoke. Edit: JVS is a socially acceptable power limit. More power is made with more fuel, but you get more smoke. The smoke is socially unacceptable in ‘most’ societies. The lecturer said adding more fuel gets more power for quite a long way past this JVS limit. Petrol engines are knock limited in cylinder pressure and cycle bore by flame speed. Knock is pre-ignition so that ain’t a problem in a diesel. Yeah, so no smoke, no poke.

Used to do long haul trucking in a freight shaker with a Detroit 60, 13 speed. Took me 1 1/2 miles to reach 60 mph under full load on flat ground at 80,000 lbs. This video really shows power.

Like here in the UK and Europe, Volvo have just released their new truck, with their new 2024 engines. They've taken back the title of the most powerful engine on the road with 780bhp making 3800Nl Newton Meters of torque, which cones from a 17 Litre inline 6. The Scania people are under the misconception that their V8s make more power because they're V8s. Which just isn't true. A Volvo FH with a 13 litre 540 will out pull a Scania with a V8 if they have similar horsepower numbers, IF the 540 makes more torque. Now those 60 Series Detroits don't really make all that much torque, when compared to a 13 litre 500 volvo engine. I think our 500's make more torque. The thing you've got to remember, is that if the next truck had more torque than you and weighs the same, they'll out pull you all day. Unless you've got a higher/shorter rear diff ratio, because, obviously that aids massively with getting going.

During a truck strike in I think 79 0r 1980 we hauled double and triple loads of mine plates to keep the coal mines open in west va....pulled out of the plant with150,000 lbs on the deck. The Ford 9000 lifted the left front off of the ground and the tandems were actually digging the asphalt up...never, ever will forget that.....

And my company orders our semi tractors with box truck engines in them. Sometimes, with a 40,000 lb load in the trailer, I can only manage 40 mph by the time the on ramp runs out.
I'm almost certain that'll actually destroy fuel mileage. Makes sense if you're never grossed out and only haul light loads, you know, the kind of weight a box truck would haul. But if you haul far more, then them cheaping out amd going for gutless engines will cost them more in the long run, being that you'll always be pushing them, even with a light load. Pretty sure unit and 53' trailer weighs almost what a box truck will gross at no?

Dad brought up our first time he brought my bro and I to Mosport and seeing the Le Mans cars race in person rather than on TV. Video does NOT justify the amount of power vehicles can have. Seeing this makes me feel like I am missing out on something epic by not being able to see this irl. So much awesomeness in this video.

@iWXKi The motor heads are thick and heavy and can take compression plus boost. It's the crank, driveshaft and the gears doing the MVP work here.
