- Learn the EXACT techniques pros use to serve effectively. A great serve has everything to do with setting yourself up to earn free points.🥇🎉
1️⃣ Loading your back leg and exploding through is crucial. The serve is not all arm, it's using your body and momentum to generate power.
2️⃣ Wrist SNAP: By keeping your arm very loose, this will allow you to have a "whippier" stroke. Combining this with body momentum is key.
3️⃣ Aiming The Serve: Always target the empty space on the court, or your opponents backhand. The goal is to make the opponent take their first step anywhere except forward.

Bro is always smiling, so refreshing ❤️
I try!!
Love your thorough but concise lessons. I especially love the whole broken down into specific points to concentrate on - thank you!
All aspects of serve are covered in 5 minutes, impressive! I appreciate your getting to the point style.
Glad it was helpful!
Another excellent instructional video. Keep them coming
Thanks 👍
I love this channel! Tanner is legit.
Dude- your lessons are always Great. I mean in this video alone: you are cover breathing to stay loose, positioning and where to serve based on the opponents positioning. This is actually coaching. Many videos contain techniques but your videos have a real coaching vibe, which puts you head and shoulders above the rest.
I appreciate that! So nice of you!!
Good vid. I'm now subscribing cuz you kept it SHORT and to the point. (No extra blah blah blah!) Keep up the good work!
I appreciate that!
Best pickleball instruction out there.
:)
Another great video with clear explanations sifted down to the essentials. Keep playing AND keep teaching!
Yesssssir!!! Thanks for taking note of this :)
Yess Tanner & thank you! 🎉🎉🎉
:)
Excellent video here, seriously. Exceptional content. Also the length was a good length too. Not too short. Keep it up 👍!!!!
Thanks!
Awesome serve!!
Thanks!
Very detailed instructions, much appreciation! Great content, keep it up! 👍👍
Thanks, will do!
Great video Tanner. Short and to the point… Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Like the toe pointing to the post for open hips; great point.
:)
I think your videos are great. It's also interesting seeing a left-handed instructor.
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!
Excellent video!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for breaking that down to all the separate pieces. Now I need to practice.
Yesssir!
Hey Tanner really like your content. I have a video request: "Respect the X." You had a short one on it but I'd appreciate a 5-min breakdown of positioning, who takes the shot in different scenarios, especially fast hand battles at the kitchen. As well as strategies to make it harder for your opponents to "respect the x" and force mistakes. Thanks!
Thanks for taking note of my 60 second breakdown on this. That is a great idea for me to go more in depth for a long form video!
,spot on!!!
:)
Thank you
You're welcome
Good tips
Glad you think so!
Brilliant
:)
Excellent. I shall try this
All the best!
Great points,t totally agree with you! Just watched men’s single, both pro players served just the way you said, except that not much of footwork push.
Got it!!
nice tips thanks
Most welcome
Love your videos. Could you give any tips or do a video for Open Stance Serving? The rotation serving from a closed stance aggravates my hip and piriformis muscle.
Great suggestion! I can absolutely make a video on this. The open stance helps a ton if you're struggling with consistency!
I used these techniques to practice today. The effect is amazing. Most of the ball landed within 20-30cm inside the baseline, with high speed and top-spin.
The current goal is to reach 5.0 level.
Thank you for the sharing.
Nice work! Love this! :)
Your videos are often short and to the point, but this was good. I struggle with my forehand serves and often go backhand, which oddly enough I can control easier. I need to generate speed, placement, and control, on my forehand.
Thank you so much for this compliment! I'm glad this helped you and see what to improve :)
Wow, what a master class on serve! I've been trying to add the snap to my serve, but it’s hard!
One thing I've noticed watching the pros is that they don't seem to put so much emphasis on serve. You'd think they'd have phenomenal serves like this from Tanner, but they don't. I think they consider it too risky, they wanna make sure to get the ball in.
Yep exactly!! Glad you see that!!
Yes, Tanner your saying to have a routine before striking the ball and breathe out as you hit it. Hit the ball to spaces not faces works well too.
Yes totally agree!
Tanner, thanks for another great video. You always have such great content. One question, in a previous video on serving you spoke about being off the line so that the ball path could be more upward (You referenced Tardio). Do you advocate that also as a standard practice or is it more of a one off surprise serve? I have been practicing serving further back with great results.
I would stand further back, I switch it around. Whichever is more comfortable!
Nice video! What about the grip? Eastern?
Yep, always E for me!
Believe it or not I actually have your exact serve with possibly even more speed. It shocks most players because the rest of my game is basically about 3.25. Somehow Im able to laser point a super fast serve. But I like the tip on pointing my toe at the post…that will make more consistent. My pb local group are all fans of your channel!
Thank you I love to hear that!
Good vid but you left out the "waist twist" serve. That's what I do and it works quite well!
Great point!
What are your thoughts on open vs closed stance for serves? I use an open stance personally.
Easier to generate power with closed. More consistent with open!
king of pickleball
:)
Good video. I don’t believe most pros, however, step that far into the court after their serve (with the exception of some like Dekel Bar) as your next movement would need to be backwards following a deep return.
I have noticed this too. I think you can get your hips fully engaged without doing a full step through, but the full step through is good for forcing your hips fully open until you get used to the feel.
Thanks! Some will stand a couple feet behind the line so they are at the line when they are finished!
What are your thoughts on the CRBN 1x Thomas Wilson 12mm?
I like it! It’s hard to control for me I prefer the 16mm!
@@tanner.pickleball Thanks for the reply. Oh ok I see, was leaning towards the 1x over the selkirk power air for my next paddle. Would you say it has a high swing weight?
what do you think about serving with an open stance and still using that leg to come in?
I like it, this way is just easier to generate more power! I believe with the open stance you cannot hit as hard!
You did a video not long ago about serving 3ft back from the line. ??
Yes! This is a different variation that I’ve been beginning to like more! You can combine these two so you end up on the line when you’re finished!
Vey good.....
I have a quick question. Some people try to serve the ball all the way to your ride side (When serving from the right side) as close to where the kitchen back line and the back court connect so they can force you to all they way to the right side thus exposing your left.
If my return goes short or try to go to their other side they try still to hit it to MY LEFT side.
Should I return to the opposite side from where they are serving (that would be to their left side) or try to jam them by returning DEEP to the same place they served from (Their right) side?
Thanks in advance
Hope I made sense.
I would say DEEP to the same place!
@@tanner.pickleballthank you kindly.
Didn't realize it was legal to step past the base line during the serve.
Sure is!
Are those the courts in Ocean City NJ? My parents live there
Yes they are!
It may have been for demo purposes only but you are finishing close or even over the serving line. It would make for a difficult third shot if the return is deep
It was tight behind me! I would normally start my serve 2 feet back
Thanks
Hi, newbie here (coming from badminton). To your last point, seems like backhands are weak in general for most pickle players? I was puzzled when I watched this, because in badminton we're so natural with backhands (serves, smash receives, net play, etc).
Hi! Good to know. MOST players struggle with their backhand big time in pickle
@@tanner.pickleball I see, thanks for sharing. I guess when I play someone new I should casually ask if they've played badminton or pingpong previously, then I can decide how often I should target their backhands hahaha
How do not hit the net?
Aim higher than you normally would!
How do you deal with people who fake you out by standing on one end when returning and then move toward the middle while you serve?
I center myself and anticipate its coming to my backhand
lol i have those same shoes -- damn ugly, but damn GREAT pickleball shoes. Babolat Jet Mach 3
I love them hahaha
@@tanner.pickleball same. can't find a shoe I prefer over them for pb
Tanner how do I venmo you 😂
Venmo: @tanner-tomassi hahahaha
I had a bad case of the service limps a few years ago so I can’t watch any serve video anymore because t then overthink my serve.
Hahahaha
Very excited for this one, i think the serve is still my biggest opportunity! Can’t wait to see what Tanner has cooked up for us, thanks for all you do sir!
I had the yips for a solid week about a year into playing. Worst feeling ever. Glad I fixed it
You can explode into the serve without stepping into the court
Yes! Step back
Maybe don’t have Connor Garnet in the thumb nail. After his inconsistency in mlp…. Lmao.
Hahahah
