    tennis player staring to play some pickleball- can someone explain the logic behind the 3rd shot drop? I know they’re different, but I was always taught not to give up the net in tennis. If you can keep your opponents back, you do. Why in pickleball is it considered advantageous to invite them to the net?

    • @robertw4196
      @robertw4196 Pƙed 8 hodinami

      Also a former tennis player (college). You aren't inviting the returners to the net. They are already there because they have the advantage of hitting a deep return that the servers have to let drop which gives gives the returner time to reach the NVZ line. It's why the returners have a large advantage during play.

    what about a little to the middle/right cuz with two righties it ends up being at the backhand of one player and kinda far for the other players forehand. also it might create a little confusion on who should get it.

      I love when players drop wide on me. I get a huge angle to hit a 2 handed topspin backhand. Almost always gets them on the defensive. That being said, I drop wide a lot until they prove they can do the same to me.

    This is very interesting. I have always dropped to the far side player’s backhand because across the court is farther and you are generally hitting to their weaker side. The points you make sense. I just worry that if you don’t hit the perfect drop, they will step back and destroy a forehand off the bounce at you. Only one way to know, try it nice time I play. It seems like you and other pro players are dropping and dinking to the middle much more. It’s about time the middle of the court gets the respect it deserves 😂

    Thx Tanner. I’ve gone from dropping side backhand as the default to middle. For some reason it was mentally difficult to do but for the reasons you outline it’s been a good thing. Plus the net is lower.

    I'm surprised so many people disagree. This concept has been around for a while and is widely used in upper level play. Particularly when the ball is to one side or the other. Less clear when the ball is in the middle to start with. But it's a good framework.

    I try to drive through the ball when I serve, unfortunately it usually turns into me being too far into the court and being on my heels trying to hit a third shot drop on a deep return. And when I back up to start it usually negates any extra power I am generating. Thoughts?

    When the ball is moving very fast, sometimes the only thing you can do is hold up your paddle like a crucifix and pray. Because timing that flick with a fast moving ball is very difficult.

    Hi Tanner, I'm a beginner and really struggle with knowing what to do when my partner returns and DOES NOT run to kitchen, either because they don't know better or playing defense after popping it up. Should I stay back and hang with them until we get a good reset, or do I just gun it for the kitchen and aggressively poach balls when possible until they meet me at kitchen line? This keeps happening in both open play and league. Thanks

    Been trying out the drop and dink middle tips. My only question is that these shots don't feel very aggressive or like they are forcing opponents into awkward shots. Is the idea that we use them because they are safe shots and we wait for that mess up from the opponents to THEN hit that winner aggressive wide dink or smash? Great videos, keep it up.

    • @tanner.pickleball
