  • Probably the SHALLOWEST wreck I have ever dived, but one with a truly sordid history. I give you the S.S. Sapona!
It's really a fun wreck to scuba dive or snorkel with tons of iconic photo and video shots, but more than that, we wanted to share with you the history of the S.S. Sapona, which draws from both world wars, the prohibition and the Great Depression and includes a whole host of interesting characters.
On top of that, the wreck features amazing coral growth! She has been sunk since 1926, so she's a fully matured reef system now.
The S.S. Sapona for me is Bimini in the Bahamas' can't miss, must dive site, and with it's sordid history, I believe this dive belongs on every diver's bucket list.
Thanks you to the team at Bimini Undersea for taking us out in such style! Do me a favor TEAM DR, show Bimini Undersea some love... Connect with them here:

Researching the wreck you're planning on diving seems like a big part of the fun of wreck diving

Another great video, the history is what makes the wreck. Sometimes it's amazing like the Sopona and sometimes it's nothing more than seeing the wreck mature. I was on the Ana Cecilia about 3 weeks after they put her down and I've been watching her grow ever since. P.s. my mom's name was Cecilia and she loved the ocean.

Very interesting! Going snorkeling there in a few weeks and I can't wait 😁

Great video James. I got to dive that wreck on Friday while in Bimini. First shallow wreck I have ever dove. Great wreck dive with lots of marine life.

I am planning to snorkel this site in May. The cruise lines don’t seem to offer diving, but clearly I need to get with this shop and find a way!

Great info, I really loved the Sopona when we were in Bimini last month. Can't wait to go back and dive again in the spring. I've read that President Bush was one of the navy pilots that bombed her in WWII

Carl Fisher was also heavily involved with the world famous auto race- the Indianapolis 500. There is a school in Speedway Indiana, just west of Indianapolis, named for him.

    Yep, I get it.😉
The wreck in my profile pic lies in 18' . I go there as often as conditions allow. One, because it's 5mins from home two, because it is part of a shipping 'boneyard' and the historical fabric of our port town on Lake Huron.
Speaking of prohibition... That was boom time for a port like ours on the Canadian side.😄 They still had to slip it past the US Customs agents stationed in town. Rumor has it tunnels still exist that were made from the upper town to the lower Port. 🍻

Awesome video. Been to this ship more times than I can remember when I was a kid. Probably been 35 years since my last visit. What about the underwater road there in Bimini? Is that still there? As for this ship I was wondering who owns the ship today? Is there any protection preventing further damage and or removal etc? Any word if it will ever be considered UN SAFE and be locked down from public visit? Anyway... great trip back down memory lane for me. No longer diving these days but enjoyed the vid ;)

Hey James I just tried calling Bimini under sea which they told me to call Neil Watson scuba bc they don't charter anymore. I called the place they said which the lady on the phone had no answers to any of my questions. I'll be there June 2-6 and definitely looking to dive. If you have any better info or dive shop I can trust let me know. Thanks amigo

I dove this as part of a live-aboard trip -- last site for the week long trip. For those who want to go deep... go right ahead. I thought this relatively shallow dive was awesome. Long bottom time... light aplenty... life everywhere. And her story is fascinating. Love this wreck. However -- I hate to see the graffiti on the old gal. Very sad.

Laughable history. 1. The 24 concrete ships for the Emergency Fleet were approved by Woodrow Wilson in April 1918 2. NO, two concrete ships were built at Wilmington, 12 in total from 6 shipyards 3. She was a freighter, absolute urban myth that any of the experimental concrete ships were to transport people 4. Demilitarised ?? In what way was she militarised ? 5. Sapona was laid up at the end of 1920 6. Sapona was never a casino. She was meant to be the Cocolobo Cay Club 7. She was sold first to Clark Dredging and then to Bruce Bethel 8. She was dismantled in 1924 in Miami, there were no parts in her when Bethel got her 9, Absolute urban myth about her running aground. She was already round the corner and in fact was used by local residents as a refuge from the July 1926 hurricane 10. I have yet to see any evidence that she was used for target practice. Did you find any brass casings, unexploded bombs and were the pilots that bad that they could hit her ?? Where's the damage ? That ship has been breaking up for around 97 years 11.ABSOLUTE BS about Flight 19 - their practice site was the Hens & Chickens Shoals. Absolute Urban Myth. All in all, a very poor attempt at telling the story of Sapona.
