Must. Stop. Watching. Aloth's romance spoilers. Uuugh I want to get the full experience, but rn I'm stuck at the Engwithan Digsite because of that stupid infinite black screen glitch and I can't proceed on the main questline. Still, it was super sweet seeing this video, Aloth is just too adorable. I'm in love with him ever since PoE 1, and I am SO glad that I can hook up with him on Deadfire.
For those wondering, this conversation triggers at Aloth Approval {2}. *slight spoilers* As a side note, if your character is too aggressive, it'll put him off.
[[MEGA-SPOILERS REGARDING THE ENDING AND ALOTH HERE - DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT PARTS OF THE ENDING SPOILED!!!!]] [[ - LAST WARNING - ]] So, I was really not a huge fan of the romance alternatives and set aside all of it until I learned that Aloth was romancable, however... His romancing turned out to be... Complicated - or at least, more complicated than I am used to when it comes to similar games. Complicated isn't even the right word but rather... Lacking - not necessarily in quality (however one could argue that too...) but DEFINITELY in quantity (... That said, my main issue is not with Aloths interactions specifically, but the... Very limited interactions with your *companions* in general - I really felt like we had more in the first game... But my memory might be betraying me.). So, I spent a lot of time wondering if I did something wrong since a lot of... Alternative sources... Hint at the entire interaction being buggy, and even faulty, at times and while I was getting through the game and neared the ending, I grew very concerned that I was missing out on this particular (and many other) side of the story. This comment is supposed to be somewhat of an extension of DanaDuchys amazing video, because I guess some people, like me, will come here to see if they missed something and because these notes answers the questions that I was looking for while playing the game and I figured that if I was wondering, then someone else probably is too. So here goes: 1) In order to have these conversations in the video, you need a relationship rank with Aloth at rank *2* and you *must* complete his own quest "The Painted Masks" (which can be properly progressed completed around mid-ish in the *main* story line). Be cautious in how you answer during this interaction displayed in the video, as pushing him is going to have negative effects (or so I've heard - I went passively and understandingly on my first and only route before I found this info). 2) He will approach you by himself - you do not have to keep checking in on the conversation option when there is no "marking" for a new available conversation. However, the entire queue-system for companions ready to talk to you seems to be in a ... Less-than-ideally-developed way. If you have reached the criteria and do the same as me (playing the game for 15-20ish + REAL hours without any update on any companion) - progress your *MAIN* story line. As soon as I set ashore on the north islands (pre-endgame, act 2-3) I had *ALL* of my companions jumping me at the same time right in the middle of nowhere. Fish boy wanted to sleep with me, Eder had a good conversation about and finally, Aloth gave me the conversation seen in the video. 3) This is pretty much it, between some small comments here and there inbetween the companions and sometimes from Aloth to you (but not in a way that you can respond to) that *might*, if you feel creative, hint towards his feelings for the Watcher. [[ - OKAY, ONE MORE WARNING, SERIOUS SPOILERS AHEAD - LIKE SERIOUSLY - ]] 4) Act 4 - before the finale: when you speak to Aloth before crossing over the bridge to climb the tower - he will hug you, say that he regrets nothing of this journey and that he will be waiting for you. The Watcher has two options, to kiss him or thank him. Thanking him will cause him to blush intensively and mumble something about "Just... Stay safe" (not the exact quote - I do encourage trying this option to see what I mean) - kissing him, however, will lead to him returning the kiss (I am not spoiling more than that, but it is sorta cute and kinda what you'd expect from him - try both options!). 5) If you have met the criteria of being in a "relationship" with him (honestly, I do not think your action on step 4 matters - the responses are pretty clear regardless of if you kiss him or not), the final sliders will have an extra slide for his ending (observe that this is with him dismanteling the Leaden Key, not ruling it - I do not know if the slide is different if he was the leader of Leaden Key, but I would assume not). The slide says pretty much the following: Aloth only had one regret: leaving the watcher he has come to love - and after a "fond and affectionate farewell", he hopes that they will meet again. Aaaand, that is it. If you'd like to share this information to any alternative source (because, information in general for this game is rather lacking) - please feel free to. I would just be happy if the information turns out to be useful to anyone!
Just a quick reminder for people romancing him, if you want to end the game with him at your side, during the painted mask quest tell him to STOP following the steps of the leaden key. Either he is rulling or dismanteling it.
I saw someone on obsidian forums saying that was the only romance dialouge they saw from him for the entire game, so either this is all bugged as hell, or it is the kind of romance who leaves it all to your imagination. Man I hope there is more.
I've been recently replaying Neverwinter Nights II (due to COVID-19 lockdown) and noticed that Aloth as a character is irresistibly reminiscent of Sand, one of my closest companions (well, both games were made by Obsidian). Wizard as well; somewhat older, but a blue eyed elf with long black hair; bookish and studious; proud and arrogant; talented and witty if needed; a somewhat mysterious presence... To me, Sand feels like older, pragmatic and more assertive Aloth... I wonder if anyone noticed the same?(◕‿◕)♡
Its possible we are seeing a bug. Aloth's rep is really sketchy at best. I never see him react to anything the watcher does. Hes the only companion who hasn't moved past stage one reputation for me. He just doesn't have anything new to add to anything ever.
The romances seems really twitchy, especially Aloth's. I've had everyone come onto my watcher except for Aloth (who I want to romance, figures) he's got 2 disposition with me and still rarely ever says anything -_-
Look at their relationship wheels, it tells you what your companions like, for example Eder likes humour, kindness to animals, traditions so you pick these kind of responses in dialogs, the game will tell you if your companions approves or dislikes your responses.
It also may be that your game is glitched. If I'm not mistaken, on Obsidian forum it is listed as one of the issues players are having, hopefully tuesday's patch will correct it
Cekachev Actually, i'm pretty sure Josh Sawyer was the one who said that he didn't like the idea of romances because they're often hard to implement in meaningful ways that don't feel like just another gameplay element rather than a meaningful interaction with characters you like beyond physical attraction (most likely referring to bioware-like romance systems). The reason it's in POE 2 is because they sold out and gave in to kickstarter demands :P
Jenna Rockbell I dunno, when I started playing The White March P.1, Aloth all of the sudden was triggering dialogue responses to everything, where usually Eder, Durance, and Hiravias would have an appropriate response. I had cleared his dialogue tree after the Defiance Bay riots and allowed him to stick around, but when the dlc came out I noticed for some companions their responses ramped up based on if they liked your reputation choices. It kind of went from, 'good on you Aloth for not being a push over', to 'Stop micromanaging my life Aloth'. His writing changed and started to become kind of nasty in temperament, everything was about how the npcs were proles, filthy, dumb, etc. It made his character a bit flat and stereotypical. It was a little ironic since my Watcher was a glamfellen tribal hunter from the white that Wends, literally the type he was looking down on. Launched Deadfire and was grateful he kicked the excessively bourgie attitude.
Shit... he's adorable... I can't stop myself from loving him...
I can't wait to see the rest of the romance unfold. Thanks for posting this!

That explains why he didn’t give my char the option >.
DanaDuchy, you are the hero we need! ;) Thx for posting this.
Had no idea about this! The only character I really wanna see my watcher with! Thanks for posting!

There's small conversation before the end and a few background comments when traveling, but that's pretty much it.
DanaDuchy it seems Dragon Age 1 romances are still the best in gaming history
@@svetlanamalavina4350 u should try Pathfinder. In second part WotR Daeran's romance - the best game romance i have ever seen.

Yes appearance is very similar but Sand is more sarcastical
BLESS U LOL I’m on a touring vacation right now so I can’t play deadfire ;-; I really wanted to see all the deadfire romance options
But how? I have not extra romance dialogues or anything =(
Its possible we are seeing a bug. Aloth's rep is really sketchy at best. I never see him react to anything the watcher does. Hes the only companion who hasn't moved past stage one reputation for me. He just doesn't have anything new to add to anything ever.

Does anyone know how to get approval from the companions? I just left Nekketaka and still at zero with everyone

They put romance in the game? I remember them saying they will never do it again. I think alpha protocol had something with that.
Because Cris Avellon don't like's that. But now he is not in the Obsidian. So, yeah - free love with Aloth! ")"
Ikr? I figured some of the writers in the team aren’t too fond of romance.

How did you manage to have that icons near the dialogue options?
I know this comment is 5 years old but there is an option for that in the settings - i think it was in the difficulty tab
